Root How To Root + Install Custom ROM + Backup + More

Probably a stupid question, but I can't get the phone into recovery mode, tried holding down home and power (the house and the rightmost key) continually but the phone just cycles through the HERO logo - looks like its continually restarting as I hold the keys down (held them for about 20 seconds) when I release it just boots normally

That means the Recovery image installed via Flashrek did to install / flash

try it again.

Did that again, "flash successful" but no joy in going into recovery mode.

Is my firmware OK?

2.73.405.5 (146733 CL#61267 release keys

Phone is unlocked

2.73.405.5 = generic rootable rom. you should have no problems rooting on this rom what so ever.

I know for a fact your phone is rootable and somewhere along the line you have may be skipped a step or something... it has worked for everyone else..when people say it does not work and I tell them to start over, triple checking stuff they come back and say "it worked"...

Keep trying. Restart your phone. Take the files off your SD. download them again 'fresh' .. put them back on. Uninstall flashrek etc.

Do it once more.

Try pressing Home + Power button down for 5-10 seconds once more.. as simple as it may seem people get this wrong too :p

Sorry, a thing called "work" got in the way of my rooting!!!

Got it, I HELD Home down and only pressed power once, and it booted into recovery. Holding "Home and Power" together just causes my phone to cycle through on/off/on/off etc.

Anyway, thanks - am doing Nand backup now and will ost an update if all goes well!

is anyone having problems with apps that need root hanging on the su (superuser) request screen?

im on the villain 5.2 rom .. all was good untill i re instaled titanium backup and when i run it it just sits and hangs on the su request.. i can use the home button and the phone works great.. but any apps requiring root cause the same problem..

i reflashed the 5.2 rom this morning and its still the same..

any ideas?

cheers simon

Thanks for u rreply.

Does the nandroid backup save my contacts too?

I BELIEVE SO............ IF NOT AND YOU DON'T MIND PAYING $0.99 THEN DOWNLOAD THE iCSV ADDRESS BOOK; EXCELLENT APP THAT BACKSUP YOUR CONTACTS TO A .csv FILE ON SD CARD AND/OR AS EMAIL, AND RESTORES AFTER FLASHING NEW ROM (OBVIOUSLY REINSTALL OVER MARKET FIRST)
you don't need any apps Google syncs contacts with your Gmail automatically. If you have not already perform a Google search on how to backup contacts to Gmail. do not buy any contact backup apps. nandroid doesn't backup contacts

yup thats the same there in the installation guide. But the currently due to some network issue am not able to connect to the market. Thats why i asked for other sources. and while copying the instantRoot.apk file we need to create a folder called root in Sdcard and save inside?. coz i dnt find a file named root inside sdcard.

Safe & Easy.

1)Download it.
2)Save it to your SD Card ROOT (not in any folders)
3)Open up a file manager on your phone (Download ASTRO File Manager from the marketplace..if you don't have a file manager..)
4)Find the 'InstantRoot.apk' file.
5)Run it.
6)It will say it's been successful

Now what am confused is wthr we need to copy it in Sdcard inside root folder. as far i can c there is no root folder in sdcard. will there be any?.

and i appreciate ur quick response..thanks dude..

SD Card ROOT means the top directory, so not in any sub-directories.
