Help Battery being drained and screens hot?

i tried to update my Note 2 software last week however it said it was already up to date, i got it last October and have never updated it so i assume its updated itself? could be wrong though (i thought i would include this in case it helps)

anyways on to my problem, i updated my apps just after i tried updating my software and since then my phone has been losing charge quicker than normal, its lost nearly 30% in 6 hours from mainly being on idle, also after using it for a few minutes the screen seems to get really warm..

could it be an app thats causing this problem? if so ill post what apps i have

I've noticed that my Note's battery is also draining rapidly lately. Charged to 100% at about 11am this morning, down to 83% with very little use (1 short call, and 10 minutes of hotspotting).

I've been wondering if this has been caused by the most recent update. Would be interested to hear if anyone else is experiencing the same issue.

Same issue here. Between the Google maps updates and whatever Samsung has done to screw up the browser and other things, I'm really disappointed with this phone now.

Have any of you tried booting into safe mode? If the battery it's performing normally in safe mode, then there's a rogue app, task or monitor that is messing with the battery life. However, if the battery life is still poor, it's most likely the update that is the cause.

To boot into safe mode, simply power off the phone. Now press and hold down the Volume Up, Down and Power buttons simultaneously. Do not release them until the phone has completely booted into safe mode. You will notice ' Safe mode' on the bottom left corner of the screen.

Hey all, i have been away so havent had chance to test safe mode but i am going to now, was wondering if anyone has found out the problem ?

also i have used 1gb data in less than 10 days, i never use that much in a month nevermind 10 days so could this "rogue" app be constantly using data?

i got a text off o2 saying i have nearly used all my data, 26 minutes later i got another one saying ive used it all so something is constantly using my internet

i have used more data than normal recently has i havent been at home but i dont think i used that much...

it wont boot into safe mode, the screen where it says galaxy note 2 comes on, goes off then comes back on again, it does this constantly until you let go of the buttons then it boots into normal mode

ive done it, you let go of power button but still hold the volume keys

sorry for all the posts, i am now in safe mode, do i just wait and see if the battery drains ?
if it doesnt how do i see which app is causing the problem? is it basically just delete an app at a time and see when it stops draining ? as that could take a long time would it be easier to wipe my phone and start fresh?

i am going to post a link below about a master reset and wiping the cache, which would be better because it doesnt say wiping the cache deletes the apps

If you are okay doing a hard reset and startng fresh, that's fine. Safe mode just isolates the issue between the device and third party apps. If the battery drain is still happening, then it's most likely the device update. In which case a hard reset might be able to remedy this.

But make sure you backup important data first as a hard reset will wipe all data on the device.

i had my phone in safe mode today in my locker and from 5 am to 12pm it lost 17percent, is that normal for 7 hours standby?

although there are no apps i still have fb logged in on the browser so ill log out and try it again tomorrow, i was thinking if it could of been fb on the browser that has been draining it/using my internet as i never use the fb app...

ill either try it again tomorrow or do a hard reset tonight

also since an update that was done (cant remember when) when i go into task manager "google play music" is there, i end it yet it comes back and cant uninstall it... does anyone know how to get rid of it?

You'd have to root the device in order to uninstall Google Music. That said, are you sure you don't have Music Syncing under your Google account?

I've had the same issue as well since I've been using Google Music. It is constantly on in the background. Regardless if I'm actively using it or not. Syncing or not syncing.

Interesting. Thanks for chiming in about that. I don't really use Google Music all that much, so mine stays at .5% drain. The only other thing I can think of is when I went into Google Music, I noticed that in the settings, there are some toggles to prevent downloading cache over mobile networks. I don't see any way of regulating how often it downloads the music cache, so maybe that is what is going on?

i have never used google music, all i use is music player to play songs i put onto mt sd card

For you, I think the sync is definitely contributing to the high percentage of usage from your phone, as far as Google Music is concerned.

In the settings area for your Google Account, make sure that all the things you don't use are un-toggled (e.g. books, music, etc.). If you load up music through a PC on your own, there's no need to have the SYNC backup for music, unless you prefer having that. Hopefully, stopping the Google Music sync will help the drain you're experiencing from Google Music.

Rtlsnksteve seems to be experiencing a different issue, but he also uses Google Music.

Yeah, I remember Google Music constantly running in background despite ending it in task manager. As I don't use it at all, I resorted to disabling it within App manager. Problem solved for me.

Yup. That's basically what I have going on. I do use the app however and it doesn't seem to affect the battery too much, so I mostly ignore it.

i left my phone in my locker today but not in safe mode for the same amount of time and it only lost 14% battery compared to the 17% yesterday in safe mode... i must have used it a bit yesterday and dont remember or something lol

how do i fully disable it? i went to uninstall it along with a lot of the other stock apps but you cant

ill disable it and un-toggle all the things i dont use and see how it goes, i am however out of data until the 10th September so wont be able to see if it helps

i might do a complete reset, only install apps i am actually going to use and then disable google music etc and see how it goes battery wise

if i did a master reset and it was something wrong with an update from samsung wont i just get it again? or could something have gone wrong cause i would have thought everyone would have the same issue if it was caused from a samsung update

It's really hard to say. Sometimes an update can have a conflict with old system files that still reside in the device. Or expose a hardware flaw not noticed before. This is a random occurrence and doesn't happen with every device. Most times, a factory reset fixes this. However, there is the odd times we're it will not.

Unfortunately, computer components are a random lot of good and bad parts. Even if the parts are the same, there are differences between them.

ive done a complete reset so just going through all the settings again and ive noticed in settings on the messages screen under push messages is says "service loading" and it says "always"...

whats this and could this be using data? it also says "push messages - receive push messages from network" so could that be a problem or is it something completely different?

Not an expert. But mine is set for prompt under service loading. I would imagine that setting it to always would cause a possible battery drain because it is going to keep the device awake as it's constantly staying connected to the network.

Hey all, a quick update and another question

i have been using my phone after i did a complete reset but with no apps, i use facebook on wifi when im home cause i have no data left and i am on my 4th or 5th day from one charge, granted it has been been idle for most of that time but thats definitely an improvement

now to my question, i keep getting notifications about app updates cause the apps i previously had are still under my apps in the play store, is there anyway to remove those apps so i dont keep getting the notifications ?

also i guess if i click update on them it is going to down the app itself as well ?
