Really dumb question about charging dock.

I see the charge port is on the side of this phone and most docks will likely have the phone in landscape when charging. I didn't think that HTC sense UI home screens would rotate between portrait and landscape? Am I mistaken? Wouldn't make much sense (no pun intended) to have the charge port be in the side of the phone and a dock that has the phone in landscape if the UI doesn't rotate.

No, that really isn't a dumb question. It's an issue I've been trying to figure out since I heard that there was a dock coming out. Some people say that Sense UI won't go into landscape mode when on the home screen, some of the Desire reviews aren't clear. The dock is definitely landscape (you can see that in the launch packet). But it also says that it won't be available until post phone launch. I'm sort of wondering if there will be an OTA update that will allow Sense to go into landscape before the dock launches. They may have figured it wasn't mandatory to the phone launch. Those are just my musings but it's the only thing I could think that made sense (ha! another pun...)

But a landscape dock with the phone in portrait mode would be absolutely untenable and would make the carrier/manufacturer a laughing stock. So something will have to be done.

I would assume that the dock will but the phone into some sort of clock application automatically like the Droid. But, who knows?

Could be a docking app like the Droid has? Doesn't mean the homescreen has to go to landscape.

Very good point! I guess I had forgotten that the Moto Droid was actually an app that ran automatically in the dock rather than the home screen changing to landscape. That would make a LOT of sense and seems it would make it feasible for the dock to work well.

Along that line, if they don't have that built in I wonder if it's an app we could simply download from the marketplace?

Hmmm, just had an interesting thought. Don't know how the settings will be until I have the phone in hand (unless someone w/ the phone could enlighten us... ;) ) BUT, with the charger on the side, and the Body Glove case w/ kickstand, we could technically have a portrait "dock" for travel...the big clock , weather app, etc. We could even setup a "travel scene" that would allow one of the home screens to be setup just for this travel dock setup. The only thing I would question is if we can have the phone stay on/bright all night. If so, this would be ideal because it would be the perfect solution to an alarm clock on the go. With the "sound machine" apps, I could use my small travel speakers and leave the sound machine app at home as well. :) If it worked really well, I might forgo the dock altogether and just use it at home that way (though w/ the regular sound machine ;) ) But it's an out of the box way to travel light.

another dumb question, but you will have to take any case you have on the DI before placing in in the desktop charger correct?

Yes, unless it's a relatively thin skin (though most *should* work) or unless you get something like the Seidio Innocase with the Seidio dock. Their dock is designed to accommodate docking with their case on.

Their is a "night clock" option with Sense and it does rotate the screen and has an auto dimmer. I use this every night...

SERIOUSLY! That's AWESOME! Could you chose which way it rotates so you could charge it at the same time? Could you use it in portrait to allow for charging? Do you lay your phone down or somehow have it standing. This is exciting because I wanted to be able to use mine for a clock at night! :) Thanks for the info!
