I've taken more bad ones than good ones, I'm sorry to say.

It really is a mediocre camera. It can take good shots. It can also take very bad ones.

Here are a collection. A blurry shot at my daughter's cross country race. A blurry shot of the very cool tablet/phone charger in my hotel room this weekend, followed by the one that focused right. A shot of the start of the cross country race, looking into the sun, where the auto-HDR should have worked, but didn't, and where you can see an artifact arc of light, probably some sort of issue with the optics/lenses. And a nice shot at my lake house.

In most of those shots, yes. The lake photo is from a day or two after I bought the phone (so, almost three weeks ago), and I hadn't played with settings much yet, so I don't think I had tap to focus on.

I missed most shots of my daughter running on Saturday, as the phone takes too long after the tap to focus and capture the shot. Maybe I will turn tap to focus off. I did figure out at the meet that tap and hold to take multiple shots is the most reliable way to get at least one good shot. My daughter is in that blurry shot of the runners - she's the one in the gold jersey - and I did use tap and hold with that, but after a bunch of blurry shots, by the time it focused well, she had run out of the frame and I had just missed her.

I've also installed the app ProCapture, which I used on my last phone. One if the things I like about that app is that you can use the volume buttons as capture buttons, so you can avoid having to tap the display, or you can tap to focus on something then take the photo with the volume buttons. We'll see if that is better than the native camera app (though I'll still use the native app where I might want to use HDR.)

I've read a rumor that the Moto X has a software update coming to fix some issues with the camera. I assume/hope that the Maxx/Ultra/Mini will get this as well.

the trick to good photos is lighting and stability. good photographers dont post just any pictures, they usually post pictures they thought about before they snapped. while the purpose of a camera phone is to just shoot at whatever, your likely to not get good photos without taking those two things into consideration before you take the picture. your pictures of your daughter and charger are quite blurry, i think they could have been prevented with more attention to stability (i know this is hard, especially for kids on a field and while zooming). one day when ois is in all phones we wont have to worry about it that much, but for now with the maxx camera, its something that will affect almost all pictures.

Hope you don't mind me joining in here, but the DROID Mini community isn't very active. I figure the phones are exactly the same, except for the screens and battery life (wish I could go two days on a single charge). That being said, here are some pictures I've taken on mine.

These two pictures are an example of an issue with the camera - white balance adjustment and exposure.

I wanted to take a photo of some railroad engines and cars, but the exposure was way too dark. Even tapping on the cars to focus on them doesn't adjust the exposure so the item you tapped to focus is exposed well. THe sky look nice though!

I moved closer to slightly change the frame, so that there was less of the sky, and then the exposure changed, and the photo came out better. I still think that this isn't a great photo, though:

Hey Doog, do you have HDR turned on, or at the very minimum set to auto? With the composition of both of those photos, even a DSLR would struggle to get the exposure correct.

Those photos look great. I'm starting to think it's some weird conspiracy how every reviewer says that the camera is crappy. I don't get it. This is a CAMERA ON A PHONE. As far as I'm concerned it's great. Reviewers are being too harsh on the camera.

I don't have a MAXX, yet, but I've tested out its camera at stores, and all the indoor shots look great. I'm truly bewildered by the bad reviews of the camera. A big SMH to reviewers.

My biggest complaint about the camera on the phone is the colors are a little muted. It's like they need just slightly saturated. The odd thing, because colors on the AMOLED screen ARE saturated, they'll look good on the phone until you xfer them to a PC.

Like you said though, it's a PHONE camera. I'm a part time photographer. If I want to get a shot I'm going to sell, I don't pull out my phone. But for anything short of that, I've gotten some GREAT shots with both my Maxx and my GNex.

Not photos exactly but how about slo-mo videos. I recorded slow motion videos of my kids at pitching practice tonight. The first was taken with my Droid Maxx, the second was taken with my wife's iPhone 5S. Which has the better effects and picture?
