Help Quickly approaching "mid-Q2"

Well, my main concern is that Samsung is going to move forward and leave the Moment half done with all these "quirks" it has, and not develop it to it's potential. Something tells me that more and more I will have to rely on groups such as this and SDX to make my moment operate better. That's not a bad thing, but I'm not a techie and really don't want to spend my free time "having to work the bugs out" instead of spending my evenings with my family.

I know that if I was still a young man working as a programmer/software engineer, I would thoroughly enjoy having this phone, fiddling with it to make a call, fiddling with it to send a txt, turning on background data, Turning off background data, finding the best way to make my battery last at least the workday. However being a retired old dude raising three young kids, I now realize I have a bulky phone that has a good battery as long as I don't turn any of the "other" things on. Should've kept my Blackberry - 1.button dialing 2. NEVER randomly rebooted 3. really is a phone first and not a phone as an afterthought. 3 If i forgot to plug my Blackberry in one night, it was OK, I knew my battery would last another day. Just can't do that with this phone: If I forget to plug my moment in at lunch in my office, I don't have a phone for emergency issues on my commute home.

Before anyone jumps on me....I do realize that Android is a new operating system and Blackberry and Moment compare like Apples and Oranges.

Hindsight 20/20 Should've probably gone with a regular flip phone or another blackberry. Now I'm stuck with this and will have to live with it for the next 22 months 22 days.

Having said all of that.....I do want to thank JoeyKrim, Cnstarz, the rest of the developers at SDX and here and other forums for trying to help me make my moment operate smoother than it did out of the box. I just came to the realization that I pay my monthly bill to sprint, but should probably be paying a portion of it at least to those genius "part time for free" developers out there who give their own time and sleepless hours to improve the moment.

Whew........I needed to get that out.

I've never had a random reboot unless I was using the JIT patch (and even then I get one maybe once every couple days). The battery life on the moment is atrocious though, it's even worse than most other android phones which aren't great to begin with.

that said... invest in a car charger. :D you can get them for a couple bucks on ebay and they work great, plus it's good to have one regardless of your phone's battery life (and if you ever use GPS on your phone while driving its an absolute necessity)

Since he brought it up, and since we are off topic anyway...why does the BB have a better battery life? Isn't the BB doing all of the same stuff as this phone in the background? If so why does the BB last twice as long?

I understand the screen and CPU draw for Android is higher when the phone is on. But background tasks like listening for push email and connecting to the cell tower should not draw more power on this phone than any other.

@Podar "...not a phone as an afterthought..." exactly what I was thinking. I've been trying to hold off on ranting but damn man, sometimes ill have to wait up to a full minute for my touch or click to go through and make a call or end a call! Sometimes my proximity sensor doesn't work while I'm on the phone and when I try to slide the phone open and close to try and get it back on, it calls the SAME person again so here they are answering my second call to them while they're on the phone with me already! And to top it off I can't seem to find a way to just hang up on ONE person if there's more than one call going on. Wtf?! I mean as much as I love this phone and all the potential it has, DAMN it can't even work as a basic phone sometimes and I just want to go to Sprint and throw it at a rep sometimes. And then I can be in between classes trying to look something up for a paper or anything and I have to HOPE my web connection maintains long enough for me to find what I need if there aren't any computers available. I mean what phone do you have to HOPE works more than half the time (it seems)?!

But I'm still patiently waiting for 2.1, maybe, you say, I should just flash it already but hopefully its already been pushed so far back that they don't have a choice to release it by May or we'll all march down Sprint for actually lying (again). Ill wait so when I do get the official 2.1 ill only have Sprint or Samsung to rant at. As for this rant, I'm done, thanks for reading.

I've been playing with these devices for a long time, and in all the updates I've been promised, I can't think of one that was exactly on time. I would rather they get it right than get it on time. Hopefully, the extra time they appear to be taking will squash some of the bugs we've found in DD10. As much as I've been critical of Samsung with this phone, the first week or so of May is not outragiously late when compared to other similar devices.

I agree with Pasta!

I would rather wait a few weeks and have it rock solid than push out an update just to get one out. Look at the bugs / quirks already discovered in dd10! Part of me thinks leaks are intentional, that way they have thousands of beta testers and not just a few. If you think they do not follow these boards, you should think again!

Samsung and Sprint are not doing to bad when you think most other phones don't have 2.1 yet id rather them take there time and make sure they get rid of majority of the bugs then release it buggy as hell.
Am I the only one that has been provoked into such a pessimistic view of Samsung, that I believe that they will take their time, release this thing late, and STILL leave it riddled with bugs?:(

I have absolutely no faith in Samsung anymore, and I am just trying to prepare myself for the horrid atrocity that will be their bullsh!t, half-@$$ed, duct-taped, patchwork of a 2.1 OS to be semi-released. I completely agree that cutting and welding the front half of a pinto to the rear half of a roadster, rather than reworking the original engine problem, would take more time than estimated, and I expect no less from this Samsung update. /rant

edit: that was not directed at you njbianco, I'm just venting. :p

While I'm not all that thrilled with Samsung either, you've got to let it go. Step away from the phone, take a deep breath, get a cold (or warm) drink and relax. It's just not worth that much angst. Peace be with you.:)

I did not notice much improvement between leaked CL14 and the official CL14, released about a month later. Similarly, I don't expect much difference between the leaked 2.1 and the official 2.1 release. The time between leak and official looks to be more of a marketing dictate rather than product improvement. Decision on the method of official update, over-the-wire, store-visit, or over-the-air should have been figured out after the CL14 update fiasco.

I am all for Samsung/Sprint taking time and giving us a solid product, on the other hand, I have said this before, the sooner the official 2.1 is released the sooner the source code will be made available for unofficial improvements. Anyway, official updates seem to come on Fridays, so three potential dates -- Apr 30, May 7 or May 14 -- for the release to be in early 2Q of 2010.

So... what happens when the update is released? How will I know it, and how will I update my phone? Receive a text message with a link to follow, let it sit for a bit while it does its thing? Or what?
Don't sweat it.

First, you will see it here in various new topics. I doubt Sprint will send out a text for several days or weeks or even months to alert the general public that 2.1 has been released. So just check in to this forum for your timely updates.

Second, you will click on one of the several topics here to find out how the update is being implemented.;)

Third, you will read the thread to get the instructions. Hopefully you will not be the 7th person to ignorantly ask for directions that are plainly outlined in the OP.

That's it.
