Which kernel do I need for 2.1 and wifi tether if I do not wish to modify the clock speed at all?

Not sure if it's offered in a 550, but I "believe" AdamZ, Chevy, Bekit, and p3Droid (not sure but that's close) use kernels that are 600 and still have tether.
Just have to find their pages and descriptions to verify.

If not, you can OC to 1000 and use SetCPU to down clock to 600 - just check how many slots and the slot speeds to ensure at the very least a 600 is there.

Edit - DL ROM Manager. Go to settings and enable advanced mode - go to Download ROM - click CyanogenMod at the top - click P3Droid Kernels - Click the first kernel (600) - it will prompt the whole install, just choose the backup option first and no wipe.

Just verify that this one has tether (most do)

(I don't wish to use a pre-modified rom, though I'm not sure if that's what rom manager will do, but the inclusion of CyanogenMod in the post slightly worries me)

But either way, my question is, will the 600 from P3Droid Kernels work correctly for this then?

If I wasn't clear enough - 550 is stock - 600 is as close an aftermarket kernel you can get.
Re-read the post above.

The link you provided will work, but if you read carefully the tether is a separate APK install. So long as you can do that you are gold.

Check out the alldroid forums and some of the developers I mentioned have pages on that site and usually the kernal threads are very informative.
Ideally you want a kernel that has the tether "built in"

PS - I am majorly modded and don't really use tether, but a program called PDANet installs on your computer and on your phone and is painless tethering. Someone else may have to chime in regarding if your kernel needs the "tethering" built in or if this app standalone on a stock kernel will simply work for you.

Oh I already had the app installed, I just needed the kernel.
The 600 one works fine

I just need something so I can use my laptop to check up on a few sites that don't lend well to cell phone browser due to flash while I'm on the road sometimes.
(I've been resorting to a VNC client on the phone in the mean time)

Try the free app Barnacle. Its wireless tethering with no special kernels required. Works good for me. Rooted 2.1 with stock kernel.
