How much do/will you use the S Pen?

Third rock from the Sun
This is a question for all the Note 2 users. I'm looking at possibly going to the Note 3 when it comes out, unless it's a dud, then I might scoop up a Note 2 for the small change it will surely drop in price to.

The S Pen has always seemed kind of... gimicky to me. To have to take the time to remove the pen and use it seems counter-intuitive to a touch screen phone where I can do most everything with my fingers without fumbling for a little pen.

Most of the people I know with Note 2's (only a few) seem to rarely if ever even use the S Pen. They'll pull it out to show it off but when in actual use, I rarely see it come out.

How many people here that are current Note 2 users even use their S Pen that much? Also, it seems that a whole of the most popular promo video is spent using the S Pen and the limited and quite frankly ugly little pop-up launch menu. The seems even more lame and gimicky to me.

Thoughts? Like I said, I think I'm going to either the Note 3 or 2 anyway but that's more about the size and other features of this fine phone (hate the term phablet). I'm just wondering what the die-hard Note 2 users feel about this.

Well I am not a Note 2 owner, far from it, I've been on iPhones for years. But when I've seen friends who use the S-Pen regularly on their Note 2s it makes me feel a little bit like a neanderthal. Seriously, when you see someone that actually uses it, the precision and functionality is really impressive. That being said, I have not used it extensively myself yet, and time will tell, but it looks impressive, especially given the expanded functionality on the Note 3.

I own both the Note 1/Note 2 and purchased them because I loved the idea of having such a fantastic large screen.

The S-pen didn't really interest me until I had my Note in my hand.... That's when I came to love the concept of the S-pen.

My problem was I didn't like how it felt in the hand, it was too skinny and uncomfortable to hold. I purchased the S-pen Holder Kit to overcome this issue, it is basically a proper pen with a removable S-pen inside and I love using it on my Notes.

I don't use it all the time but I love what the pen can do and in the winter it's a godsend. I see the Note range as a having my cake and eating it situation . It has the large screen, its fast and you have the added bonus of the pen function. What more can a person want? :D

If you haven't already, search on youtube for the 'Daily Note' its has over 100 videos giving full details of what can be done on the Notes.

I appreciate that people may not use all the functions but aren't we lucky knowing that they are there if we suddenly need to use them;)

I think there are a lot of Note users who still don't know what the S-pen is capable of which is a shame.

I don't use my s pen too much at home, but all the time at work.

It is awesome for taking notes during meetings and more importantly, while conferencing with my students...which is on a daily basis. We are required to take running records and anecdotal records daily during reader's workshop. Not only do I look awesome busting out my notes from my phone when meeting with my principal, it is also the best way I've found to organize them all.

It is because of the s pen that I'm sort of stuck buying the Note series...and I've got no issues with that.

I meet a LOT of people in my real life circles. I'm always collecting names and phone numbers, usually on little scraps of paper, and later transcribing them into Contacts. Quite the chore, too! When I heard that the Note 3 can read my handwriting and enter my handwritten (with the S-pen) names and numbers directly into Contacts, I was DONE. Sold. Hurry up and take my money!

All the other stuff it can do, like scrapbooking and stuff, I will likely come to love as well... I foresee heavy use of the S-pen functionality.

Hmmmm, wondering if you can jot dates and times and if it would go into your calendar?

Whenever leaving the doctor or dentist I'm always trying to plug in the next appointment before they hand me the reminder card, haha. It would be nice to just jot the date and time instead. Of course, I could still just jot it and manually put it in later, lol.

Possibly at a later time, with a later update. Right now, apparently not. This video shows what you can do with the S-pen:

Every little bit helps, though :)

It's dependent on the user. Also the S Pen keeps maturing with each iteration in the Note line. I use the S Pen quite a bit on both Note 2 and Note 10.1.

I had the original Note too, but the S Pen was not a great experience on it. It did feel more of a gimmick on that device.

I just wish apps gave us the option for the 'air command' (or should I say pop-up menu). Sketchbook Pro for the Note (not the Play Store version) has something like it. I have the pen hover over the screen, press the button and it populates a menu. I love this function as I can export/share my drawing right away or import directly to S Note. Only thing I'm not happy with is that it doesn't allow me to customize the S Pen menu.

I also agree with Miss Diva. The OEM S Pens I have (Note, Note 2 and Note 10.1) are a pain to work with. I am currently using the S Pen with eraser (was using the S Pen holder previous to it). For me, the eraser is great and what I want. It's great to finally work in a more natural environment when I'm working on my drawings, sketches and what not.

I love to take notes in a notebook so I an thinking the s pen will be great

I would consider the Note 10.1 or Note 8.0 for that as it offers a much better experience and natural feel. The Note 2 or upcoming Note 3 falls short in this. It is more of a note pad/memo in this regards. It is not very fun to work with if taking notes for hours on end. Yeah, that's why I have a Note 10.1 in my arsenal... :p

Nobody seems to have mentioned the no-mucky-screen advantage of using the pen. I use capacitive stylus pens on touch screens now already. So for that and for accurate, fine work, I anticipate using the pen a whole lot.

I hate mucky screens.

Am I the first here to say that I use my S-pen exclusively?

My fingers never touch the phone screen. Never.

I really enjoy the S-Pen experience. I swipe through articles using it, I type emails and text messages.

Love using air view to hover the pen above an article and scroll up and down through a page.

My phone never gets oily fingerprints all over it.

The S-Pen is one of the leading reasons why I stick with the Note brand.

With that said, I wonder if I'm the only one here that has never used a stylus? I am getting the phone primarily for the processing power/screen size. Coming from an Infuse 4G, the N3 will be a shear pleasure to use. Not really sure how much I'll use the S pen but I'll sure give it a go.

When you get a phone call, do you take out the s pen to answer it?

Thanks to all for your insights. I think that I will likely use mine on occasion for specific tasks but not a ton. Special thanks to MISS DIVA for putting me onto the 'Daily Note' posts on You Tube. I've only barely scratched the surface of these and they are great! (although a huge time-suck!!!)

The only down side to the videos is it makes me want to go out and buy a Note 2 today. But I will suck it up and wait another couple weeks (patience is not a strong suit for me!) until the Note 3 comes out and make the decision then. I'm counting on all of you to upgrade immediately and tell me how much you love (or not) the Note 3 as compared with your Note 2's!

I like to challenge myself to learn all the features of any tech device I buy.

Scouring the blogosphere for tips and tricks has been very beneficial. I get the most for my money, in terms of functionality, and once I've learned it there's a good sense of accomplishment along with the time savings that comes with my new skills.

Therefore I expect to implement the GN 3 S-Pen for lots of different things. I also look forward to its usefulness & the variety it will add to my workflow.
