The Future of Google Voice is Here

Google Voice is going to become the next "Skype" because ever since Microsoft bought out Skype they started to charge for the service where as Google doesn't, Plus Google has Hangouts configured right. The App for cell to computer visual calls is a nice touch!

I use an Obitalk 110 from Amazon in conjunction with Google Voice for a free Landline Telephone. The Obitalk acts as a SIP. with GV as the voice gateway. I also linked my cell through an app called Obion to become a "softphone", anytime I'm near a WiFi signal I make and receive cell calls for free.

Hope this helps out someone who likes saving money, just like me!!

I have used Google Talk for a year now for FREE. If you look at their rate plans the USA and Canada are free. I guess because they are an AMERICAN based company. All I know is, I found out about it after digging into googles "extra" services, just exploring. After that I have been a 100% Google Fan!!

I had a phone Number for 4 years with Sprint. I ported that number to Google Voice for $20.00. then in the settings I forwarded the calls to multiple phone lines. house, cell. After a month I found an app on Google Play called "Bring Ring" for $5.00. It allows you to access the phone numbers setting in Google Voice. So I am able to turn off either or all numbers if I chose. that's not even the best part, Every Android user has a Google email account already that they're contacts are in.
In Google Voice, go into each individual contact and create personal greetings for each one.
Example: My Dad calls, My Google Voice Voicemail says, " Hi dad, sorry I missed you, I'm probably out with the kids, if it's important call me again or leave me a message".
I also have a general one for selected groups such as co workers/ bosses.

That way you can say on your voicemail to your friends group, to meet you at the lake for fishin' (WHILE YOUR SUPPOSED TO BE WORKING, LOL)

I have paid Google only the 20.00 since August 2012 for excellent phone service VOIP (voice over internet protocol)

Google's app called "Hangouts" is linked to your Google Voice and Gmail account and the quality is comparable to Skype but it is FREE! that is unless Microsoft buys out the technology but I seriously doubt that.

One thing they may do is charge people to assign Google voice numbers, who knows. I'm reaping the benefits now!

Google Voice could (and should) be so much more than it is. SMS/MMS fully integrated into Google+ Hangouts, Gmail, and Google Contacts. It's pathetic that someone who wants to send me a picture message right now needs me to give them an alternate number to use.

I know right! But hopefully Google will take it's voice seriously now!

GV was the one app I was surprised at how outdated it is on my new moto x. It reminded me of Eclair/Froyo apps (almost). The web interface is not much better. I dont think either has been updated in quite some time.

If it has to be part of Hangouts, that might be ok, if done right I guess, but it is hard for me to picture that.

I REALLY hope they keep it though. It is a wonderful thorn in the side of carriers and a fantastic service. But the app and website desperately need some redesign/development love.

It certainly does need an update, it is very dated.
I honestly hope they don't integrate it into hangouts or G+, leave it the way it is. I'm afraid that it is going to turn into a more closed service, G+'s only type deal. I use it for texting and it works great with anyone, no need to part of Google anything...have phone number can text. I just don't want that to go away but something tells me it may.
I also use it as my phone number and voicemail, I can't imagine they are going to change that in any way but, again, I'm not so sure they won't.

Same here jhawk, I have my GV listed in my Friends/Family with Verizon. Every single outgoing call I make is free (I use GVCallback), if my family plan starts getting close on minutes then I switch it to show my GV on incoming calls too...all free.

If they change the way it works I'm screwed. I work from home so make a LOT of calls during the day (co-workers and meetings), no way my family 1400 would last without GV.

1400 seems like a luxury compared to my 100, lol. But yeah, I'd be happy with adding mms support, but I'd rather keep things unchanged as long as they keep working as is.

I let my contract run out with Verizon. I am just going month to month. Could I port my number to Google Voice, cancel my Verizon service, then get something like Straight Talk with unlimited data and low minutes and just use Google Voice for calls?

Or would this even work at all?

Straight Talk give you unlimited minutes anyways, but the data from them is far from unlimited. However you could port your number to GVoice and set it on forward to the new number so that you don't have to worry about porting it to Straight Talk or letting all of your friends and family know that you have a new number. Another advantage or porting to GVoice is that if you choose to carrier hop for better deals or rates, you don't have any attachment to the carrier number, only the GVoice number.

What many GVoice users like to do is use the T-Mobile 30 prepaid plan. That comes with 100 minutes, unlimited text, unlimited data throttled after 5GB of usage. Port your old number from your carrier to GVoice, and then through the use of an app like GrooveIP or talkatone, you can make all your calls over Wifi or data once you set the forwarding service to go through Gmail.

Dunno something about the native SMS app just feels better. It also not all mixed in with the call log (though you can sort with that top menu thing, it's annoying -- to me anyways).

CyanogenMod roms have Voice+ which allows you to route your GVoice sms message through stock messaging app or GoSMS. I've heard it doesn't play well with Handcent, but maybe that's changed?
