Help [Resolved] Screen on/off settting during/ending a call

Ok, during calls, my screen goes dark to save power. My question is how do you wake it up? I tried pressing the button on the top of the phone but that hangs up the call. Is there a way to change what the top button does during the call?

I had an app called call light ever since my HTC Hero that kept the screen lit.

why not let the light sensor do its trick?


when you remove your face from the screen the screen should light up. when you put your face back to the phone the lamp goes out...

THis happened while using a wired headset during a long phone call. So the phone was never next to my face. After about a few minutes, the screen went dark during my call but the call was uninterrupted. THis makes it kind of hard to look things up on the phone if I cannot get the screen to resume during the call.

For future reference (others)

In this photo, to the left of the earpiece, you will see the sensor ports for the Proximity Sensor and adjacent Ambient Light sensor for the HTC One. For optimum performance of these sensors you'll want to ensure that these ports are not blocked in any way (cases/skins) or have any dust/dirt/oil covering their "eyes".

well that changes the game a bit... major piece of info..

still, I can turn the phone screen OFF during a call and then press the power button and the phone comes immediately back up from standby. i enter my code and boom! back in.

not really sure why your model does not resume from a power button on call from being in a sleep mode. perhaps the wired headset was the culprit? maybe try a different wired headset and test again. I have read a few posts from users of this model phone having issues with wired headsets...

are they BEATS headsets by any chance?

I'll take a stab at this although I'm not that familiar with Sense. From the Dialer screen (AKA Keypad) tap on the settings soft key, tap on Call settings, then uncheck Turn off screen during calls. Also while your in call settings tap on Answering/ending calls, then make sure the box for The power key ends calls is unchecked.

Well, I would think that would do it but I do not see a button like that.

When I open the dial pad, I have a button that is ... That is the closest thing I have to a settings button. Inside that, there is a 'Settings' option. In side that, I see no Call Settings option. Closest thing is CDMA Call Settings. It seems this would be the logical place to put that option though.

I was using the headset that came with it. Just not sure how to lookup contacts while on a call if the screen goes dark on the headset.

It appears after reading the manual that all app settings are handled through the notification panel So in order to get to call settings you should click on the phone icon from the home screen, Slide the notification panel open then tap on the icon that looks like a cog/gear. That should get you into call settings. Can anyone verify this for me?

I just finished a conversation with one of my co-workers who is a long time HTC phone user. His current phone runs Sense UI version 3.6 and while he is making calls with his included headset the screen does not turn off and the power button does not terminate a call. After I explained what was happening with rscarawa's phone he advised that what he should do is press the home button when the screen goes off which will return him to the home screen where he can look up other things while still in the call. The Sense UI does not allow you to shut off the proximity sensor or stop the power button from turning off calls.

Once before I said I'd have to stop trying to help HTC users with their Android problems. Now after having a long talk with an HTC user I have to admit that there is really, really nothing I can do to help you folks. I always thought that Android was Android and what works on one phone with the the same OS would work for them all. Now I know for sure that HTC in all its wisdom has decided to run things their own way.

Yep. That fixed it. What a crazy place to put that setting. I thought ACCESSIBILITY was for people with bad hearing or eyesight. Maybe they should have had this option two places. Seems call settings is a more appropriate place for this type of setting.

I found that option in the first 15 minutes of owning the phone. It's kind of a dummy button...just turn it off and forget about it. I'm guessing you wouldn't want a somewhat useless toggle taking up space in a high-traffic options menu.

Maybe this was already posted on another thread. But has anyone had an issue with the screen not shutting off when you are on a phone call and the phone is by your cheek?

HTC one, not rooted, screen protector isn't on the sensor, sprint, nope on the soft reset, out the box 3 home screens with no live wallpaper and I have 10 gigs left of memory.
I thought that phones with proximity sensors should automatically put the screen in sleep mode when on a call so that your cheek doesn't accidentally press buttons during a call. As much as I like this phone, I'm surprised that this phone doesn't do that.

It does do that. Mine does that, anyway.

You might have a defective one? Try making a call to an information line or something (or a number where you know nobody will pick up right away) and then hold your finger over the sensor to see if it goes dim. It should go black almost immediately if it is working properly with stock settings in place.

While on a long call and when I put the speaker phone "ON' the screen will be dark, is there a way to reverse to Speaker OFF without terminating the call? The only button that can be accessed is the power and that automatically ends the call.

Yes,go to SETTINGS>ACCESSIBILITY>& disable the Power button ends call option.

I've been searching around for an answer, but have come up empty to this puzzle

I mostly use BlueTooth devices during calls on my HTC One (and One S before that), and it really annoys me that the screen turns on, unlocked, when ending a call from the BlueTooth device. Most of the time the phone is in my pocket, so it's rumbling around in there changing settings, calling random contacts and so on.

How do I stop the screen from turning on when ending a call from a BlueTooth device?

For people having issues with the phone's display staying in sleep after moving it away from your cheek at the end of a call. I may have found the solution. This took me a while to troubleshoot.

There seems to be a problem when What'sApp contacts are synced to the phones address book. Choose not to sync your What'sApp contacts and hopefully this will fix this issue for you. It did for me anyway. I believe it's when you have a contact with a saved number to the phone or sim etc... and also a What'sApp contact number saved to the same person. It must be a bug in the phone's software/app.

I am new to android, and used to have an iPhone. The main problem I have is the proximity sensor. During a call, the screen comes on and the mute button gets pressed or the speaker button. I went back to the retailer and they swapped it for a brand new handset. Has anyone else encountered this? I am running 4.2.2. The software number is 2.24.401.8

Are you sure you don't have a case or some dirt blocking the sensor? My screen comes on fine if I remove the phone from my ear while in a call.

Hi, Thanks for your reply, I have a case, but it doesn't cover the front of the screen at all, it's a slim case, and none of the screen is covered, it just holds the phone in place in the 4 corners. Could you suggest anything else, I have looked through the settings and cannot find anything in there to turn it on or off, there was one with my old SGS4 though? Thanks

No, I'm not aware of a setting to disable the screen turning back on. TBH I can't see what the point would be - screen staying on, ok, but turning off and staying off would seem a weird option to me.

I see this post has been moved to a new thread, so maybe one of the other posts in this thread might help? JoshShep's post (#19) suggests a solution to the same symptoms, though may be a different cause for you.

I have noticed the same thing, but it does not happen all the time, I think it's a bug in the phone itself
