Root Mobile Hotspot, anyone get it working?

Has anyone been able to enable the free mobile hotspot on the Maxx? On my GNex I used SVTP but it doesn't work on the Maxx.

I have rooted my phone with the MotoRoot method and I have also used SQLite to change the Entitlement Check from a 1 to a 0.

SVTP still does not work and neither does WiFi Tether for Root. Am I doing something wrong? What is proven to work, if anything? I need some direction here.

I used the vzw mobile shot spot yesterday for about 45min and I am rooted.

I used it for more than 2 hours while driving yesterday. You have to change the 1 to a 0 using SQL Editor.

I did it without any problem.

The ONLY caveat is that in his directions it says to go to settings.db (duh) but what he doesn't add in is that for our Maxx you also have to open system.

From there go to line 65 and edit the field with the number in it and change it from 1 to 0.

yep, also, it doesn't say that there are 2 different items called system storage, and you want to go to the one with the icon of a hammer on it

Awesome news, and I'm using it now with my Ultra.

This feature is rarely used and then only by me or my wife, good to have if we have to run from another hurricane, and really the only reason I rooted the phone.

On mine when I opened DB it then gave me 3 options,

android_metadata
settings
sqlite_sequence

I opened settings and that's where line 65 was to change from 1 to 0.

For those who don't want to pay for the SQLite Editor app, you can still gain wifi tethering/hotspot with this free alternative.

1. Download the free apps aShell and aSQLiteManager from Play Store.

2. Launch aShell, check the "Root" box, then hit "File Explorer" button.

3. Browse to /data/data/com.motorola.android.providers.settings/databases, and open up settings.db with aSQLiteManager.

4. Now choose the "settings" table, hit "Data" button.

5. "PgDn" until you see "65. entitlement_check" and change that value from 1 to 0.

You're done! Restart and wifi tethering/hotspot will work now.

I used MotoRoot to root and SQLite editor to change the entitlement check to 0. That's all I did.

My question is will I get any OTA updates or would I have to remove root to get them? Or will the OTA update break the root and I can just re-root? Will I be able to re-root after a update with the same program? Or will a new rooting process have to be developed by the guru's? I don't understand how all this works.

We won't know until the update comes. But, based on past updates, we can make a few guesses:

- based on what you said you did, yes, you will probably receive the update

- if you deleted any files in /system, such as any bloatware apps, especially if the apps are updated as part of the OTA, the OTA will probably fail to install. It doesn't sound like you did that

- what you did sounds like something that will not make the update fail. But, you never know until the update comes.

- if the OTA does install, it will probably unroot the phone. It may be that there is a rootkeeper app that will allow you to keep or restore root - but maybe not

- as the vulnerability that provides root is a security flaw in the system, it's generally likely that that the flaw will be fixed and a new root vulnerability will need to be found to regain root if it is lost

You're best bet is to not install the update and see what others report if you really want to keep root. It shouldn't take all that long to find out the answer to your questions.

Thanks. No, I only disabled some apps. I didn't remove any.

The only reason I rooted was to get the native hotspot to work. If any OTA update doesn't screw that up I will be fine, root or no root.
