Hi, i recently ordered 2 Samsung galaxy s 4s from Amazon, unlocked and simfree. One was for me and the other one was for my brother. Now my brother has a Vodafone sim card same as me.

Now the problem is his phone updated to the newest version that allows him to move apps to sd card, while my phone did not and when i try to it says i already have the latest version. What can i do to get the update he got?

Is my phone defective?

Your phone is not defective... just on a different CSC code, (Consumer Software Customisation code), to your brothers it would seem. CSC is specific to geographical region and carriers. It contains the software packages specific to that region, languages, carrier branding and also APN settings for data connection, MMS etc for your service provider.

To check... type into your dial pad...

*#1234#

You will be shown 3 lines of information. The last line is CSC and it is the first 3 letters after the model number that are your code, i.e; I9505OXXBMH1. In this case the CSC code is OXX which is for Baltic, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, Macedonia, Montenegro, Nordic Countries, Portugal, Romania, Sebia-Montenegro, Slovakia, Spain and Switzerland.

It would not be unusual for two, sim free, phones to be on different CSC codes when purchased from a large retailer.

CSC codes are used by Kies to determine update releases and if they are changed, Kies will no longer recognise your phone for updates as there will be a CSC mismatch.

For more information on Samsungs CSC codes, see here.

my csc code is I9505BOGAMDC

BOG = France (Bouygues)

so I just need to wait? so the kies software on my pc does not detect the new firmware update I think.

Kies is detecting that you are on CSC code BOG and that you are already on the latest firmware that has been released for that code. The latest release for BOG, so far, is PDA = i9505XXUAME2 which was released in May.

so now I wait for france to get the update and my phone will update automatically?

As soon as the French telecom provider, Bouygues, updates the firmware and releases it back to Samsung for rolling out on Kies or OTA, (Over The Air).

I am in the united kingdom.

It doesn't matter where in the world you are... your CSC code will be updated as above.

oh ok, anywhere I can check when they will do so?

The only people who know that are Bouygues in France.

It should be soon I think because didn't jellybean come out this october for Europe?

All S4's are released on Jellybean, Android 4.2.2. This is what your phone is already on. Android 4.3 has not been released yet for the i9505. What your brother received was an incremental update for Android 4.2.2 which Bouygues may not bother to release.

so I should give up on trying to move apps to sd card ? The phone is crippled without that feature.

Yes. You are on MDC release and apps to SD was only added for firmwares MGA onwards.

Basically, you have a phone that has operator branded firmware and it is up to them which firmwares they will release. Unbranded, non operator, handsets have had as many as 6 or 7 firmware releases since the launch of the S4 in April. CSC code BOG has had only 2. 1 in April and the one you are on, in May
