Give people ONLY your GV number or else pray that your friends don't accidentally text your real phone number.

quick question from someone getting ready to dump the iphone for an incredible..

what advantage does using your google voice account on this phone do for you? I mean, does it NOT use verizon minutes when you use google voice?

Is there any other advantage to using GV on this phone over the native Verizon apps?

thanks so much for your help!

The 1st advantage is when you use the app and don't forward texts, then you can send and receive texts for free. The way calling works is your phone calls your google voice number and then gets forwarded to who you want to call. So what I do is add my google voice number to the list of numbers I can call for free so it won't charge against my minutes.

3 Advantages:
1. If you have a Friend & Family plan, just add your GV number so all outgoing and incoming calls do not use voice minutes.

2. Use your GV number solely to send texts and you will not have to have a Text Plan.

3. GV has visual voicemail. Save yourself the extra monthly fee.

Important: read through the instructions on this blog. It appears that you should set your GV number in your 'friend and family,' however, pay attention to the part about how your contacts will get their own unique phone number and in order to use GV properly you will need to call their unique number instead of their real number. Hope this helps.

so, if you open up the GV app, that I assume we can d/l, and you are on a wifi connection, turning off 3G, and make a phone call, you will still be using Verizon minutes????
doesnt make sense...unless, you cant make an out going call at all with GV with 3G turned off..

Google Voice isn't a VOIP provider. Yes, you still use Verizon minutes but you can get around that if you have a Family & Friends plan. If you set it up correctly all outgoing and incoming calls come from 1 phone number, which you would add to your Family & Friends plan, thus no minutes will ever be used.

can you use the "wifi" connection on your phone to access Google voice, or will it only work with 3G?

do you make your google voice number one of your "friends and family" numbers, or do you use the "forwarding" number that Google Voice routes all calls through as that number?
I could see that working with any outgoing calls, but, not sure how that would work with incoming calls..

No, again, Google Voice is not a VOIP provider. You have to make a phone call to access Google Voice.

You get a new phone number from Google Voice, that number goes on your Family & Friends list. As for incoming calls, you would give out your Google Voice number to your friends, not your cell phone number.

So i bought a GV invite off eBay, but after reading this thread and that Tips & Tricks link, I'm not exactly sure if i should use my mobile number or sign up for a GV number. I don't have a "friends and family" plan, so I wouldn't be able to dedicate a GV number for unlimited calling. Is it even worth using GV without taking advantage of GV number? That link makes it seem like it isn't...

OK, I have had a google voice number for a long long time..when "Grand Central" first started..
I use it mainly for my business calls, and it rings my home AND cell phone right now, so I am not sure I would want my "cell phone only" incoming calls to ring my home number and my cell phone.

thanks for the responses to my questions!

I'm not using it for unlimited minutes (I only use 100-150 a month) and I think it's awesome. You get free texts, you can text from your computer, listen to voicemails from your computer, get free visual voicemail, you can set up different voicemail messages depending on who's calling, call screening, you can set it up to multiple phone (I have mine set to my cell and my home phone), you can direct a call to any phone you have connected to GV (i.e. call from friends go to home and cell, business calls go to cell and work, unknown calls go straight to voicemail), if you switch phone carriers you don't lose your voicemails or texts, etc.
