Wish the camera was 3.2mp What a shame! 8mp = larger picture but NOISY LOW quality

Well from the sample pictures I have seen so far it is easy to confirm the pictures have more noise than lower resolution cameras due to the tiny crammed 8mp pixels on the sensor. What a shame

This all the fault of the uneducated general public who think more MP is better when in reality it is NOT and Mfrs have no choice but to adhere to these uneducated fools simply to sell product. It burns me every time I see some fool post "I wish it had more MP" or "Its only 3.2mp". Anyone who knows anything about digital cameras knows that lower resolution cameras of the same physical size sensor will take better pictures due to better light sensitivity.

My old LG Dare with its 3.2mp camera takes superior pictures to the samples I have seen from the Incredible so far. The picture quality is much better on my LG Dare due to it having larger individual pixels on the sensor which create much better light sensitivity and MUCH less noise.

I have even seen a few uneducated authors of reviews state that the camera is great just because it is 8mp. This stupidity must STOP already.

We want a QUALITY camera in these high-end smartphones NOT a camera that produces so much NOISE in the pictures due to the crammed dense 8mp sensors that are used.

Matters are worse when taking pictures indoors or in low light environment and the little LED flash only works for close pictures.

Also, its actually quite funny how people have criticized Apple of using "only" 2mp and 3.2mp cameras on its iphones when in reality those cameras blew away all the 5mp units on all other smartphones due to the reasons I have already stated. I am not an Apple fan but it really does show that Apple makes quality products. As far as the camera is concerned at least they put QUALITY over pleasing the stupid general public with numbers they dont even understand.

Why cant people get a proper education? Am I the only one that understands this because everyday I look at people around me and I know that my mind is superior. I have yet to find someone with the same intelligence, knowledge, and insight of how reality really works....

What are you taking about?? The problem is camera quality has stated to go DOWN on smartphones after 3.2mp due to the pixel sensitivity being reduced. Technology is supposed to advance. Unfortunately camera quality is being reduced due to the crammed dense sensors being used. Just look at the sample pictures.

From your post, you sure do seem to think of yourself as "superior" to other beings on a topic that I'm sure they are just misinformed on or just simply DO NOT CARE. From what I've seen, the camera does a good job for a camera phone. I'm not going to be using it often at all considering it takes up quite a bit of the battery and since the really good photos that I want will be from my actual camera. You're not the only one who knows about this topic, especially on these forums. Were you even planning on getting the Droid Incredible? Or are you just coming here to bitch about something?

I'm not buying the pixel density = crap argument. But then again I'm not a pixel peeper. The over all image for a 4x6 would be fine. If anything people are looking for video performance. The one thing I'd love to see would be a nightshot feature but I doubt it will ever happen.

Phones in general have tiny sensors.

The bigger the sensor the better the quality and low light sensitivity.

A phone has a limited amount of space.. where every millimeter counts.

Then there is the cost of throwing an expensive camera sensor into a phone that is nearing the $550 mark.

Then you have to factor in, that if you have a high quality large regular camera sensor in a phone.. The large sensors need to have more area and larger heat sinks to keep cool.

More heat means lower battery life.

Larger photos with more detail = larger files..

I could go on.. but this debate has been going on since the first digital cameras came out.

Excuse me? Are you sure about that statement you made right there... Seems you make a lot of uneducated insights yourself. I have a lot of experience. If you would, please provide us a more educated thread containing photos that you took with the two devices (8MP Incredible and 3.2MP Dare).

When I get my Incredible I will do such a test just for this thread. I've seen contradicting picture samples, some with a lot of noise and some with almost none. I could also take pictures with my HTC Touch Pro to offer more comparison, and even the Motorola Droid if needed (for 5MP).

If you are about to argue about something, try providing proof of your claim. Otherwise you will get shot down, just like you have already.

It's true that cramming more pixels onto the same size sensor will reduce image quality. The camera manufacturers (Canon, Nikon, etc.) have started to stop their whole megapixel war. For example, Canon's Powershot G11 is 10 MP while the older G10 is 14.7 MP. The G11 has better image quality.

Lens quality also matters as do noise reduction algorithms. The Canon 7D has 3 more megapixels than the 50D yet the 7D's noise levels are as good, if not a little better, than the 50D due to its noise reduction.

Putting 8 MP in a tiny sensor for a cellphone does seem kind of excessive to me. These photos will rarely be printed on something larger than an 8x10. Most will be down-sized to something like 800x600 for web use.

yeah.. but the majority of the folks buying phones and cameras only know one thing.. MEGA PIXELS..

Its not sexy or advertising friendly to put image sensor specs on a camera box.

Im not saying more pixels is the better route mind you, just that its hard to advertise details that mom's and pop's will understand..

The point is smartphone camera quality is being REDUCED all because of the uneducated general public who think higher mp is better. It has NOTHING to do with adding huge expensive sensors in, it has everything to do with using even PREVIOUS generation sensors which produced higher quality pictures. The move to 8mp was to adhere to uneducated general public all to sell more product despite reduction is quality.

Anyways, really... I think it depends on what the end use is for. For me, I really don't care whether it has 3.2MP, 5MP (which is reported what the next iPhone will use), or 8MP. As long as it takes decent photos that are uploadable to Facebook, I'm good. I'm not planning on doing anything else with the photos I take other than Facebook. If you use Facebook, you know that the biggest the photos get are definitely not big at all. If you were hoping that it would replace your point and shoot (although I don't know why it would considering that you should save your battery), then it would be a disappointment.

From the reviews that I've read, almost every place has said that it has mixed performance (I'm not sure why though). Some were definitely point-and-shoot camera quality worthy and others were like "WTH?!?" A site like CNET for example said that it simply had "excellent photo quality".

So in the end... it matters based on the person and their use for the camera. It's a pity that you're disappointed by the camera performance but for someone like me, I'm perfectly happy with it and definitely isn't a deal breaker or even a big negative.

I bet you get all pissed off when you bring a hard drive home and find out that your 1Tb drive is actually 910GB

I'm sure HTC, being a huge corp, did all the math and realized that they could get more Incredibles sold if they bumped the camera up to 8MP.

Or htc is just running by the seat of their pants and they just pick parts out of a junk bin.

You could send htc a letter and explain that you prefer quality over quantity.
