Moto Droid, Big mistake?

Hello all. I happened across this site today by accident and am very glad I did. All the forums and help seem really awesome. I will be receiving two Moto Droids tomorrow(one for me, one for the wife) We currently are Blackberry storm #1 users. After looking on the Moto Droid forum and seeing all the problems with the new software upgrades and various other issues, I am wondering if this is such a smart move.?.? Just looking for some valuable input since this phone and operating system are totally foreign to me. Thanks for your help.

Return them both. Motorola does not have the engineers to create great smart phones and the Moto Droid is a great example of that.

When you look at forums like this you have to keep in mind that they are generally filled with 2 main types of people. You have your phone geeks, like myself, that are here to learn new things and talk about their phone. We are also usually the ones helping everyone else. The second group are those that need help. Remember that most people don't come to forums because everything is sunshine and roses with their phone. They typically either have a problem or are looking for some way to do something that the phone doesn't do natively. In some cases the two are combined into a phone geek that has a problem because they did a little bit too much tweaking with their phone too.

Just keep in mind that with a new Verizon phone you have 30 days to return/exchange it if you have a problem or just don't like it. Also reading the main sticky threads at the top of any forum will give you a ton of useful information that will only enhance your experience with the phone...and just make you feel smarter.

While I hate the idea of derailing cjacobs' thread, I just wanted to point out that the Incredible and the Nexus 1 are actually pretty different phones. They have similarities in hardware, but the Nexus is running vanilla Android and the Incredible will be running the Sense UI. Makes for a really different user experience.

Not a mistake, the Droid is a great phone, I think once you hang out on the forums here you will learn a lot about it and see how amazing it is. You can do a lot with the Droid that you cannot do with other android phones, and the support and development for it is HUGE...good choice.

Great choice! In no way is the Droid a piece if junk or hard to use. I bought two at full price after trying out the eris, and if my girlfriend can figure it out you and your wife will have no problems! Any questions let me know!

I agree with OTD about trying the Droid out for 30 days. Forums are not an accurate indicator of problems you'll encounter. It is useful for things to watch out for though, but most problems posted are isolated instances.

why not just get one moto-droid and htc incredible that way you have both to compare with and see what you like and don't like right then and there.

I looked at the incredible, but if i remember correctly the Moto had more memory which appealed to me and my wife hates the virtual keyboards on the BB storms we have. So that booted the Inc. and made the Moto the choice for us.

The Incredible has more memory. It has 8gb of onboard where the Moto has a 16gb SD card preinstalled. So if both phones get upgrades and can use the same cards at all times then the Incredible will always have 8gb more.

I came from a Palm Centro and like the Moto Droid very much. It did take some getting use to and I am still really at that stage. I've had it for some 6 months or so. Thats one of the things I like is it has features I still have to figure out
Anyway the real keyboard was a selling point for me. I like that. I used a stylist with the palm cause of my fat fingers. I've been able to do whatever I need to do and much more. I have had no real issues with the phone. I did find rebooting it every several days is needed but other than that no problems. I'm not gentile with my phones as I do remodeling and have dropped it a couple of times all ready. No problems yet :-0
The GPS is actually better than my Garmin on 95% of the trips.

You might want to go try out the incredible when it comes out, but other than that, heck naw you didn't make a mistake getting a pair of Droid's for you and the misses. Damn goo decision really, dump your blackberries in the compost pile and then later use them for mulch, as should be done.

To the compost pile with the BB's. I was on U-tube today and watched a side by side video comparison between the BB storm and the Moto Droid. I was blown away.....the Moto Droid kicked the BB's A$$ hands down. I think the BB was said to have a better E-mail function but that was about it.

I came from the BlackBerry as well, the Motorola Droid was a big mistake. I love it when it works, but useless for email. In other words it's a great multimedia toy, not a reliable business man phone.

I can't imagine having to put up with a BB on a day-to-day basis. Just trying it out briefly already made me want to throw it across the room--what a piece of shit OS. How do you bear it without throwing the thing down and stomping on it until it breaks into itty-bitty pieces?

There're plenty of e-mail solutions for Android, but no amount of software will fix the craptacular, worthless pile of feces that is BB software.

It constantly locks up and acts like it is always "thinking" which makes iy very slow at times and it is no speed demon as it is. I do like the E-mail and text on it. The apps for it aren't that impressive. Web browsing sucks on it.

You crack me up! And as much as I miss the reliable email the BB had I just can't part for the life of me the web browsing abilities of the Droid along with the apps. It's like women, both of my girl friends serve a purpose, just can't get it all in one package.

Thats not what I said, I said it can do a lot that other android phones cant, I didnt specify if it was 2.1 or not. But the droid has the many capabilities because of its keyboard, like emulators and what not are muuuuch easier. Also there are 39839024832 ROMS out there that will always keep the Droid fresh

Yeah, I've heard the horror stories and continue to be amazed why anyone would get a BB unless their workplace gives them one for free or something.

I have been using the Motorola Droid since very early January. I like it more every day. The first week or so was confusing, as this was my first smartphone. It took awhile just to get comfortable with what I really want to do with a phone like this. Do I want to do calendaring? - and with what application? etc. etc. etc.

At this point I could not be more pleased. I have the found the apps that are useful to me -- and I don't waste time with apps that are not.

Trial and error has served me very well. I have had no problems at all with email. I use K9 for both my accounts - one of which is Yahoo. No problems at all.

The voice-to-text is g-g-g-r-r-r-eat.

Online updates from Verizon have worked fine. I use the phone to refine my daily life - rather than as a toy. (Toys are great- but that's not what I want from my Droid.) I don't want some major upgrade or change every other week just because a new phone has been released and somebody somewhere says it's a must-have.

Be patient starting out with your new Droid. Discover what you really want it to do for you - then base your choices on what you want and what you see with your eyes.
