Google uses two codename for each device. Mako and occam are the two for the Nexus 4.

More specifically, "mako" refers to the phone's hardware, while "occam" is the software variant.

(The Galaxy Nexus is much more confusing - the family of devices (both CDMA and GSM) is "tuna", the GSM hardware is "maguro", the software is "yakju", but there are also a number of different regional variants of the software (takju, yakjux, etc).

That article is full of crap. The old messing app is still present on 4.4. You can choose whether to use it or Hangouts.

It also makes it sounds like all devices will come with GEL. That is also false. Though you can install it if you want.

Technically GEL is contained within Google search. You just need to download an extra apk for your phone to properly recognize it.

It'll likely be available on the playstore for all devices running 4.1+ soon enough
