Camera Awesome

For all of you who love to take pictures and still aren't quite satisfied with the Nexus 5 camera, try Camera Awesome. The issues are obviously the software of googles camera and not the phone. Camera Awesome shoots around the same if not faster than the native app, and the quality is noticeably greater and consistent throughout the photos. There are however a few issues to warn you about. The biggest being that occasionally the app will want to capture photos with lower exposure (darker) than the preview. The quality is still there but in low light situations it makes pics sometimes unusable. The other dissapointment is the user interface is still iPhone themed. Which is ugly and confusing for android enthusiasts. Oh, and it lacks an HDR mode, but it seems to take better pics than Google's "HDR+". Tegra 4 devices get HDR, slow mo and more... So we are getting jipped but I'm sure the developer will improve the app in the future. I am just going to use both apps until I decide which is superior. There is a lot left to be desired with the Google camera. But when Camera Awesome acts correctly and doesn't mess with exposure I get nice shots that feel like better quality than the ones I can achieve with the native app. So the pros sorta out way the cons. Don't hold me responsible if you spend the three dollars and decide you don't like it after the 15 minute window. Results seem to vary, as the app supports very few flagship phones currently.

If anyone knows any better camera apps to compliment the capabilities of the Nexus 5, please let me know so I may take advantage of them.

While that is absolutely true, I thought I would share a way to "improve" the current camera software. Particularly since the OP expressed an issue it.

Sorry, didn't mean don't share, wasn't my intention. Was just hoping others would post up too if I mentioned apps as I would love a decent camera /video app as the dodgy focus on the phone ruined videos I was talking at a concert last week

I took a video last week which had some focus issues too, I didn't know if it was just a problem with my particular scene or not. Focus would be fine and then it would slam out of focus shortly and then go back. This would happen on an even pulse every 2 seconds. I tried to figure a way to share the video on here but couldn't figure an easy/private way to host the file.

I have not tried it myself, but have you heard of the Camera v1.3 Mod? You can read about it at XDA.

Yeah I've read all about it. But not only do I not have a computer to root, I'd rather not at this point. I'd like to enjoy out of the box experience and still be covered by warranty in case something happens in the near future. So far I seem to have got a good batch.

Does the camera have continuous shooting like the One X/S4?

I just came from the One X and no, it doesn't have any burst mode at all except you tapping like crazy and waiting forever for the next pic to be taken. Annoying. ><
I really really really REALLY loved the One X's camera. I still believe it's one of the best to date. If the megapixels were 13 instead of 8 it may very well have been. The HTC One's camera is not what I expected. Sure the software is great but with 4 megapixels, alot of huge factors suffer like editing capabilities, and especially macro/closeup shots. Sorry HTC, but quality in all modes > decent low light pics.

Is the camera really that bad?

No, not at all. The stock camera is fine, you just really need the right conditions. The major cause of the poor performance is actually the software. Google's camera app just plain sucks. The HDR+ feature is the ONLY thing I like about it. BUT fear not fellow photographers! There are rumors (with evidence) that Google is working on a new camera API, so we may see a substantial upgrade here soon for KitKat. Or we may just be disappointed again... who knows!?

I don't get all the complaints about the camera. I've got nothing but compliments about the pictures. I've even had an iPhone user tell me it looked better than their pictures (theirs were more cloudy in the same conditions) and an S4 user was shocked when he saw the quality of pictures and video. The camera's not perfect by any means, but they're also working on updates. That's a pretty decent value for what we paid.
