Paul has said that he will only build roms on top of official releases, so you won't see one until HTC officially release 2.1. He may get to see it before we do though (he has spies everywhere!) so it could be released before HTC release 2.1 to the public.

So basically it could be any time between now and the end of the year

Very likely, as he had a 2.73.xxx.xx ROM available before HTC got their official update out the door.

What worries me though is that he's too preoccupied with the Desire to be bothered with the old Hero now.

This is probably a good thing. The chances are that 2.1 on the Hero will be locked down just as tightly as it is on the Desire. Prior experience gaining root on the latter and the Legend should save him a lot of time and effort.
