Buy from T-mobile or Google?

I just called my local T-mobile store, guy sounded smart. He said to get a 32GB unlocked N5 from T-mobile can be done, but it takes them two weeks to get it special ordered and delivered. I asked him why can't I just get an unlocked one from Google, and he said something about that being ok but it would only work on Edge or something else -- the take home message is that yes while it would work with T-mobile, it would not work as well or as fast as if I had gotten it from T-mobile directly.

Legit or bogus?

I think the total price if you include tax vs. shipping is comparable either way.

I have been using the unlocked one since it came out without issue. The only reason I would buy through them is if you need the JUMP program (warranty and phone upgrades) or if you can not afford the unlocked phone outright. If you can go without that the cheaper option would be buying through the Play Store (just remember to order a micro SIM from T-Mobile as well)

Solid info.

Warranty, insurance, support -- how does that work if I buy straight from Google?

You get the standard 1 year manufacturer's warranty through LG, insurance would need to be sought if desired from another company like asurion or another company. T-Mobile will give you some support if you have issues with their network, but if it's your device acting up then you're on your own.

plus, assuming you are using a credit card to buy from google, most credit cards would extend warranty by another year (check with the Card issuer to confirm)
