Help "Google Services" sapping my battery

This is quite an interesting one - yesterday at the end of the day my battery was at 18%. When I looked at the battery useage, I saw that "Google Services" had used 73% (screen was something like 12%).

Sadly, I didn't think to take a screenshot of it because I thought a reboot would probably fix it.

It didn't.

Today, it's doing a similar thing (see photos).

I've noticed some other threads about Google Services doing this, but I haven't updated any apps or downloaded anything since this has started happening so I'm finding it hard to find what the problem is. Anyone else had this?

I'm curious as to what's caused it though as I've not updated anything.

Several of the Google services auto-update regardless of user settings because they now contain core OS functionality. The idea is that, by doing this, there's less need for actual OS updates which are often dependent on the networks' whim.

The issue here appears to be with the Network Location Process (NLP) generating excess wakelocks and preventing deep sleep. A quick-and-dirty solution is to disable both "Let Goggle apps access your location" and "Google's location service" in Settings/Location services.... if you can live without the functionality.

Thanks for the detailed reply. I have tried a couple of days without the network location functionality and it seems to have worked. I've switched it back on because I do use it, but it's nice to know that's the cause if I'm running low on battery.

Where are you guys getting this information? Just so I can keep an eye out for Google's fix without bothering you..?

I have tried a couple of days without the network location functionality and it seems to have worked.

The recent Google Play Serves update (4.0.34) seems to have mitigated the issue slightly, but I'm still seeing a higher-than-expected number of NLP-related wakelocks. I'm putting up with it as, like you, I find the location features too useful.

Where are you guys getting this information?

I first read something in another device forum here at AF, which led to another Android site and eventually to XDA, where a few of the experienced developers were experimenting with solutions. In other words, a lucky coincidence.

Any chance you have the link to the thread on XDA? I can't find it using the search function...

(Still happening on my phone by the way!)

Guys, might have fixed this.

First I tried uninstalling (or disabling) Google Play Services - big mistake. Just throws up loads of errors until you install it again.

Then I fiddled with the options in Google Settings. Went to Android Device Manager and unchecked both options,

So far so good, but I'll keep monitoring for the rest of the day and report back later...

Okay, 5pm update and we're looking really good after disabling those options.

Please can someone tell me what I'm missing here - surely the experts at XDA have/had thought of this already....

It could be that the problem manifests differently depending on individual usage.

I've made the same changes as you in ADM and have restarted my handset to monitor what difference I see over the rest of the evening. Fingers crossed! :)

Nice one. Please can you let me know (if it was anything like mine you should start to notice a difference within about half an hour)....

My battery drain is better, but I'm still seeing stupid-percent wakelocks attributed to NLP; for a device that's spent a large part of today idle in my pocket, 46% of the time in 'deep-sleep' is bad. That's with ADM and location-based wifi disabled too.

I'm going to disable the Google location service and disallow Google apps access to location data tomorrow, to see how that affects things.

Thanks for the feedback Slug.

Just by comparison, my Google Services percentage battery usage is at 4% at the moment, CPU total: 25s, Keep awake: 4m 12s, GPS is 2, 0s, and "Wake Up" (whatever that is) is 350.

I unplugged at 5:30am this morning (early start for me!) and it's now 18:43 and I have 76% battery left. Hardly used phone really (screen time has been 40m 24s (22%)).

Hope that's useful.

After 12hrs with Location Services disabled:

Screenshot_2013-11-29-20-22-46.jpg

That's much more in line with what I'd expect from my usage pattern. Deep sleep is now up to 68% and all wakelocks are below 1%. :)

That's good news, but that's still with location services disabled?! (Did you mean enabled).

I think they've fixed something now because my location services are enabled and although I'm still seeing some wake locks, not anything like as many as before.

Nope, still disabled.

What version # are you running? My Google Play Services is v4.0.34 (924341-38).

Sorry :-|

Mine is 4.0.34 (924341-38) as well. I do still get wakelocks don't get me wrong, but it's nowhere near as bad as it was. In the 3 hrs 11 minutes it's been off charge, there's only been 85 in 43 seconds (1s for CPU total). Screen on time 11m 55s.

Anyone noticing any improvement on this? I now have everything on apart from Location reporting and Location history in Google Location Settings, and although there are still a few wakelocks creeping in I've noticed a big improvement over the last few weeks.

5h 59m on battery
Screen on time: 33m 58s
Google Services:
CPU Total: 41s
CPU Foreground: 1s
Keep awake: 6m 29s
GPS: 1m 16s
Wake up: 184.
