Root [Virgin Mobile] [MK5 4.3] All Things Knox Discussion

Hopefully after work I can work on this and if so I'll have a flashable ZIP by tomorrow late evening.... If nothing else by Monday morning.... I've got to look into this KNOX bootloader that we have flashed with this new update.....

There are a few "KNOX" drawbacks:
YOU CANNOT USE ODIN TO REVERT TO 4.1.2 AFTER THE 4.3 UPDATE!!!! YOU WILL HARD BRICK!!!!!
YOU CANNOT RUN ANY ROMs <4.3 (e.g. 4.1, 4.1.2, 4.2, 4.2.2) THIS WILL (at least SOFT) BRICK YOUR DEVICE!!

Well that sucks. Do you think it would be safe to root?

since the update has be out it seems that every galaxy s3 with all service providers have been having issues. its seems to be the reverb all over again. has one had this update and how is it running. should we update or not

I'm guessing they fixed some issues... but the only issue I have is that it's a little slow getting to homescreen and the folder is left open unless o press the back button. Maybe it's just me. I actually kinda like the update. Not a huge update but a little interface change. Idk about service quality but everything is fine and dandy. But I would suggest you wait until there is more input.

It's a bad idea if you need root access right away. I was able to install custom recovery and flash supersu but the built in "security feature" they call Knox keeps SuperSU from opening thus preventing root access. I'm at a loss right now in finding a solution.

EDIT: I fixed it!! I have root access! I was able to locate SuperSU in system/app and reinstall; load up SuperSU and enable survival mode. Now I'm freezing Knox with Titanium Backup :D

How did you get super super install can you give a step by step? Thanks!!!!
an let us know what recovery you used!!

Sure!
I started out with rooted MG2 build with CWM recovery. So in order to revert to stock rom, I used the MG2 tar file (found in my return to stock guide) to revert to stock MG2 with stock recovery then installed the update zip.
After installation I used Odin to install the recovery listed in Austrie's root guide and then used it to flashed the latest version SuperSU which claims to work with Knox. Apparently it didn't work so after much fiddling I realized SuperSU wasn't in my app drawer. So after stopping the Knox security process in application manager, I navigated to system/app with root explorer and opened superuser.apk then selected "install" and there it was. It worked again. To be safe I selected "survival mode" in SuperSU which is a feature of the pro version.
I'm not sure what exactly fixed the issue but that's everything I did. I admit I am very ignorant on Knox and how it functions in 4.3 I'll to look into more tomorrow.
I'm also sorry if this post is poorly written I am running on very little sleep feeling super sleepy and I'm about to crash. I'll probably edit and clean it up tomorrow. Goodnight

ROOTED THE UPDATE SUCCESSFULLY

Reverted to stock recovery, flashed custom recovery, flashed SuperSU.. rooted!
No problems :D

UPDATE: SuperSU is not working after boot. It says "Unauthorized access to a secured area has been blocked" does anyone know how to get around this??

SECOND UPDATE: After rebooting, it has reverted me to the stock recovery. This is crazy. Hopefully someone can help with this.. or post a version of 4.3 without this Knox pain in the..

THIRD UPDATE: EDIT: I fixed it!! I have root access! I was able to locate SuperSU in system/app and reinstall; load up SuperSU and enable survival mode. Now I'm freezing Knox with Titanium Backup :D

Hey, do you think you can take your steps and try to make a new thread?

That's exactly what I did. I actually froze Knox with Titanium Backup. Anyway, I talked Degrated Shadow over at XDA and he said he can make a flashable zip that will remove Knox. I'll post a new thread on it once that happens :D

As for me achieving root, it must have been dumb luck. I think it should be noted that I have purchased the pro version of SuperSU and I enabled OTA survival mode. Not sure if that makes a difference.

Not to worry, I'm sure a rooted version of this update will be made available soon

Do you think if I go into the update zip an remove the knox files 're flash it threw the stock recovery you think it will work and let me reroot ?

Very possibly. I was able to actually root with Knox installed it's just that it kept force closing supersu.

In other news, this update has disabled Wi-Fi tether for me. Can't get anything to work and from what I read about 4.3 it disables it by default. Just letting you know.

Thats mest up dud!!
I guess you checked connection optimized!

Yeah I've spent the past few hours trying every version of Wi-Fi tether for root users.. even the new experimental build and nothing. Tried every device profile, every setting. I'm starting to regret this update. Everything seems sluggish and jumpy or maybe it's just me.

I'll be calling VM soon to add the $15 hotspot. It's a nice feature and I will be relying on it heavily for storm chasing next spring.

I'm beginning to realize that the update to 4.3 being rolled out to us is actually a way to implement security enforcement on those who root their devices. Correct me if I'm wrong and I may be having a bad attitude, but I am not accepting this update and it's heightened security measures in a positive manner.

What gets me when reading about Knox is that it is supposedly geared towards government and business security solutions. If that is the case, then it is a complete b.s. move on the part of Samsung to push this on all the "average Joe" cell phone users, especially the rooted community who is using Android the way it is meant to be. While I really enjoy my SGS3, I highly doubt I will buy another Samsung device once I have gotten my money's worth out of this phone thanks to decisions like this latest "upgrade."

If any of you want to know about Knox. Here you go. Hoped I helped you understand about it a little more.

How to uninstall Knox - AndroidPIT

Interesting article for sure. I remain convinced, however, that custom 4.3 such as Carbon or Hellfire is vastly superior to stock Touchwiz 4.3; undoubtedly a lot of rooted users have encountered a negative, headache-inducing experience courtesy of Samsung this weekend.

Seems that we could flash another bootloader which would enable us to revert back to older android versions. Does anyone know which bootloaders we could revert to?

It seems the new bootloader is also disabling tethering because of selinux.

Does anyone with better knowledge have insight on how to install a different bootloader?
