Built in memory class?

How will the built in memory on the Incredible work? I've heard that it's basically a built in SD card. So does it have a class rating? Does this apply? If not then why not. Please explain how this will work in more detail if possible.

I read that it is an embedded ssd (solid state drive), specifically Samsung movinand. There is no class rating because it will not be an sd card. Think of a really fast (in terms of transfer rate) hard drive that has no moving parts.

Look up moviNAND memory. That's what we have in our Incredibles as internal memory, not a microSD card.

Apps are what would take best advantage of this space- not media.

I don't believe you'll see apps take advantage of the on board storage until they're updated to recognize the path to said storage.

Yep. This seems certain now, since HTC apparently respond to person at Androidheadlines stating that is why the Amazon app was not pre-installed, since it can not see it. Only apps designed as part of the framework can see the space. No third part apps can see it.

A huge functional advantage of that space has been killed. They might as well have allocated all of it for app storage, since you need a microsd anyways. Surely they do not think most people will use the 2gb, do they?

Hopefully all will be resolved in Android 2.2 - lack of "sufficient" app storage has been highlighted in every review of an Android device to date. Google has acknowledged that this is something they're tackling.

The current issue though is the 6.6gb built-in can not be read or used by any apps but pre-installed. There are a ton of apps that use the microsd space- they should be able to use the 6.6gb, but can not.

Imo it'll be up to the app developers to insert code that checks for the built in memory before writing to the sd card. Which should not be hard to do, but it won't require an os update to get it done. However they may release a special patch within the first couple weeks to the os in order to insert this code automatically and not rely on the developers to do so. The only problem i see is some apps that aren't maintained on a consistant basis won't work properly without an sd card until the patch is released. Either way the fix isn't something major and shouldn't take long to implement, so i would say this is a non-issue or will be soon.

Apps can put data files, etc, on the SD card, yes, but apps themselves cannot be archived or installed to the SD card.

Main issue right now is that you must use a microsd card if you expect a certain (a lot actually) apps to work correctly. They can not access or push data to the built in space.

That is why Verizon added a lame 2gb card at the last minute (literally the last minute).

The concern is apps may not be updated to see it. HTC responded that is why the Amazon MP3 app was not included with the phone. The app can not access the 6.6gb of space. The 6.6gb has been mapped in the OS as app storage space- even though it is NOT allocated as app storage space. Ironic. Part of the 8gb flash is for app storage and the remaining 6.6gb is treated like media storage.

Pi$$ poor solution that may not be able to be corrected by devs. If it could, why would HTC and Verizon be last minute dropping these "huge" 2gb cards in? They also intentionally left the Amazon MP3 apps out for this very reason.

Does not seem like a simple update to me

Still, not long to find out if devs can fix it
