Sick of This Phone

before anyone get all mad about my subject..........please read.

i have been patient, i have rooted, i have read for hours and hours about fixes, work arounds, and everything android-htc hero possible. i'm talking nearly 100+ hours of reading. i have a job where i can surf the net nearly non stop, allowing me to do this.

problems:

1) htc mail app does not work despite every work around possible. i've had to forward my yahoo mail address to my gmail. effen lame. i also have to refresh all my yahoo accounts by hand which i need to only check daily. again, htc mail app does not work.

2) gmail app gets mail pretty quickly, however it does not notify me consistently. i will receive 2 out of 5 notifications...and i mean, light sound and in my notifications bar. i have tried clearing data, rebooting, and everything else you can possibly name off.

3) as everyone knows, the weather widget is a POS. what's the point?

4) calendar widget is effed up...i have to manipulate it to get it to work.

5) my phone is NEVER....i repeat NEVER ON 3G...it's always on Edge. and this is all over the raleigh, durham, chapel hill area.

6) bluetooth has repeatedly crapped out on me.

7) audio has disappeared for no reason on phone calls, had to reboot.

8) seriously.......i am running fresh 1.1 with gumbo. someone please tell me that if i flash to damagecontrol 2.1 these issues will disappear? please......cause i'm past my 30 days and this is effing ridiculous.

I have my yahoo account set up. Had no problems so I don't know whats wrong with that. I don't have the problems with 5-7 and I too am using fresh 1.1 with gumbo.

I don't know about the email issues you're having, but when I flashed 2.0d, every issue I had with my phone went away. If you haven't tried a 2.1 rom yet, why not? apparently you've got nothing to lose, eh? 1.5 was made for gsm phones, and patched to work with cdma. Seems like the 2.1 builds that were designed to work with cdma may help you as much as they helped me..

I have my gmail set up though the HTC exchange server app. I just put a domain... m.google.com and i leave the exchange server field blank. then I can configure it to receive mail as they come in. works like a charm.

I don't know about the email issues you're having, but when I flashed 2.0d, every issue I had with my phone went away. thank you. this was the type of help i was looking for...not necessarily a definitive answer but a possible solution. i haven't flashed any rom beyond 1.5, so i think that's my next step. if that doesn't work, well i'll be bummed out.

DUDE! That's why we have android phones! to play with them. because we can. That is half the fun of the hero, making it work for you, messing it up and fixing it. Try fresh 2.0d. It is awesome to me, and really complete. I can't believe it's the same phone I had before. Complete turnaround. Good luck, and just make sure if you do it, to read read read about wiping and all that good stuff that goes with upgrading your rom to 2.1.

the 2.1 ROM's are likely to seem a bit slower than 1.5 with a custom kernel, but they'll get better with time.

I haven't had any email problems, and more often than not my phone notifies me of an email before it even comes through on my computer (I use gmail though)

Audio loss has happened to some people on the 2.1 ROM's, but I believe there's a fix.

I don't use bluetooth, so I have no clue on any issues with that (except that I can't pair with another phone...well, I can pair, just not send anything but contact cards lol).

Not real sure why you're not on 3G. Stupid question, and don't feel insulted by it, but does the phone say Ev or 1x in the signal bar, and is there a triangle in the bars as well?

The "genie.apk" widget for news/weather in the 2.1 ROM's is pretty nice in my opinion, one of my favorites. It's accurate enough, but no quick access to an online weather page (at least, I don't think there is).

To make it short, I don't think you'll be disappointed with the 2.1 ROM's. There seems to be one for everyone's taste, and the customizations for them are really picking up.

yeah, if your phone has an E in the status bar, that's 3g. there is no "edge" on the cdma network.

I am stock, always have been, always will be, so some of the issues, it appears are issues w/ the custom ROMS, and I don't have any experience with that.

One thing I can attempt to help with is the signal issue. I was having it just the same as you. Heavily populated area, GREAT Sprint coverage, and yet, still on 1x (and sometimes Roaming). I finally got fed up with it and talked to Sprint Tech Service over the phone. They had me hard reset and trouble shoot for a week. After a week, no change. They swapped out the phone and the new one (a refurb) has been great! Signal is still weaker than all phones I've owned in the past, but it is a 1000% improvement over what the first Hero was doing. I've never had dropped calls with the first one, but data speeds were at a crawl, and I would roam sometimes where I shouldn't. The refurb has been a huge improvement.

I don't know how much stock can go into this, but my first Hero was one of the "first batch" that had the "Rev. 0" visual bug in the status menu. This new refurb has all of the latest software (I guess that's what you could call it) and works fine.

The calendar widget....yea, that's a pain.

As far as the Gmail notifications go, I'm not sure if this is the problem, but it will only notify you after you get a new email. If you are notified, and don't check that new email, it will not notify you of more email. In other words, if you have been notified of an email, and haven't gone into your inbox to check it, you will not receive another notification of new email until you do. (hope that makes sense).

Anyway, hope those bits of info are helpful to you.

Let me start off by saying, I'm running a stock Hero...

1. I never have problems with receiving emails both the Gmail and Mail apps work fine for me.

2. Once again, works for me. I always get notified.

3. You need a weather widget to let you know that its raining outside? You cant walk to a window and see the wetness?

4. What do you mean by manipulate? Mine works flawlessly.

5. I turn my 3g off when im not using it, to save battery. Within 2 seconds after hitting my 3g "on" switch, I get connected.

6. I dont use it.

7. Also, never had this problem.

8. I'm thinking that it is the ROM you are running currently; just because of the fact that I'm stock and have none of these issues.

ok...there were a lot of replies, lemme see if i can hit em all.

i do use the gmail app, as i had hit and miss luck with htc mail app. at first i was loving the gmail app, but it seems like i'm missing some of my notifications now. some one in here said my problems were because i'm rooted running fresh - that's not the case at all. however they aso gave me some insight saying that gmail has an unread email, it will not alert again. this answers about 90% of my gmail issues, so thank you. the other 10 is because sometimes, i still won't receive a notification, even if the inbox is empty.

calendar widget...someone here said they don't understand what my issue is:

the small calendar widget often gets a day ahead. i find this happens if something in my calendar is scheduled for 'all day.'

weather widget....please don't be rude. saying stuff like "look out the window" is not helpful at all. go on youtube if you want to anonymously talk like that to people.

also, saying stuff like 'mine works fine' is not helpful.

Look for a small v after the E. I bet its there. Ev is 3G. If you are not seeing 1x, then you are on 3G.

There are many updates that come with 2.1, too many to list off the top of my head. 2.1 is said to fix many bugs as well. Mind you, there is NO official release of this firmware. Any customizations you speak of will somewhat vary based on the build of the ROM you use. Archon put together a review of 2.1 which can be found here. Again though, this is not an official release, so some features described may not apply to the official release when it comes. But he reviews my personal favorite ROM, damageless'. That might help you.. As for actual fixes, I think a sprint document was recently leaked covering bug fixes which 2.1 will address.

Its possible that when you wipe and install a custom 2.1 ROM, your email and calendar issues will be resolved. I previously had a calendar issue here and there but nothing to noticeable. Since I installed Fresh 2.0d I haven't noticed any problems with my calendar. I'm assuming the wipe helped fix that and my mms problems. Good luck!!!!

Download "Smooth Calendar". It has a great widget, that automatically syncs with the stock widget. All of the events are 100% spot on, and it is customizable as well. TRUST ME- DOWNLOAD IT. Smooth Calendar.

Weather - if you mean the weather that is included into the stock flip clock? If thats what you mean, download "beautiful widgets". YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED! Its like two bucks, and has some of the best clocks/weather widgets out there. Also for weather, have you not downloaded "the weather channel" app yet?

I have no issues with the Calendar on the stock rom... It just works, and syncs flawlessly with Google Calendar... Do you have a market app that is interfering with your calendar?

Define better... If you mean more stable, I have seen no signs of instability, so I think you may have issues based on hardware or add-on software.

If you are talking functionality, then it is purely subjective unless you tell us what you want in a calendar, nobody can really do anything except tell you their favorites... which may, or may not, be better to you.

Because of the array of things you have that are failing, I think you might have a faulty Hero...

I flashed 2.0d literally one day after flashing 1.1. I know people say 1.1 is quicker, and lags less, but I never saw it. 2.0d is quick, lag free and just awesome. Try it out, you wont be upset...

I agree that Fresh 2.0d is the most feature complete Android 2.1 ROM available for the CDMA Hero. I have had nothing but excellent results with it.

The phone is still kinda pokey when multitasking, but everything works.
