Headset audio is so bad cannot understand phone conversations

I've had my Razr M since June. First one came with an auto eject feature for the SIM card so Verizon replaced it. The replacement has been rock solid until recently. As far as I can remember this started with the last operating system upgrade. My phone is currently running 98.18.94XT907.Verizon.en.US.

Anyway, the problem is that when on the phone the sound coming into your ear is horrible. Best I can describe it as a buzzy gravely sound and it is very difficult to make out what the person on the other end is saying. It seems like it is a blown speaker under the Motorola label. But I recall that this was not a problem before the recent upgrade.

My question is, two fold ... one is anyone else having this issue ... and two do you think it could be a software issue where a hard reset might help. I really don't want to go into verizon. They will simply give me a used replacement phone.:(

Sounds like it's just on the verge of "going digital". That would be software (possibly the update) and I'd bring it back and not act like the upgrade was an early Christmas present.

Water? Dirt in speaker? Try blowing compressed air toward speaker. You can remove the label over if there is any.

I think it is dirt in the speaker. I used a can of compressed air and blew in there today and it cleared it up for a while but it went back to doing it later in the day. I am going to remove the Motorola label when I get a chance and clean it out with compressed air.
