N1 probably one of the biggest scams of all time

Everyone is going to say I am trolling, but I am not... I just want to say a few things to fellow N1 users...

The phone not going to Verizon, HTC officially dropping research on the 3G issues, the terrible launch, defects, and customer service associated with this phone....

This was NOT a good start for Google. Although I like my Nexus one, it does everything I need it too except carry a steady 3G signal, Make and receive phone calls and get a decent signal, and send and receive texts in a dependable manner.

I honestly feel like for what I got and what I paid, I have been screwed. I know this thread will probably be flooded with people who have "no issues" with their N1s, or "Love them", but I have a feeling you are in the minority.

I REALLY like this phone.... but it has so many flaws it makes you wonder if they properly tested it before sending it to market. Using the Incredible as an excuse to cancel the Verizon N1 launch sounds like a recall or admittance of it being faulty without just saying the word and offering a fix and refund.

Sorry to post something I know will probably start flame wars, but I just wanted to see if anyone feels the same. Maybe I am reading into it too much, but in hindsight, as much as I LOVE Android, I'm wishing I would have spent all that cash on an iPhone, jailbroke it, and waited for a Android phone that could really give the iPhone a run for its money..... I love Android OS, it just seems like the innovation of the handsets and support is slowing down and getting poorer. thanks for listening to my rant.

Sell your phone and buy something else. You'll be down 50-100 bucks or so. No biggie. I like that not so many people have this phone. Could give a crap who carries the phone.. I can understand why carriers are hesitant due to direct competition from google and a newer phone coming out (that's the way it goes).

Not experiencing your problems either. You really think a vocal group of customers with defective phones on these niche forums make up the majority users?

Well so far no followers in your 'nexus is a scam' theory.
I have only just started on a 3G plan today so I can't really say anything for that. But I do know that this provider's 3G coverage is below average in my region. But testing 3G with my last provider gave great results with a steady signal and 1 Mbps download (which is pretty decent here). Didn't test that for very long tho as it was extremely expensive, that's why I switched providers (cost -600% :D 3G coverage -50% :()

Only thing I can say about networks now is that wifi reception is probably a bit worse then on my laptop, sometimes getting 1 bar whereas my laptop gets 3.

How old is your sim card? I know a lot of people keep theirs forever (I had mine for over six years), and some people have reported getting a new sim card helped their 3g issues.

i'm on t-mobile with a 2g iphone, and a new sim card helped with a voicemail issue. I think the newer sim cards are using newer technology.

just a thought. :)

While I wouldnt go as far as to say I feel "scammed" I would rather use the word "short changed".

With the incredible being released with the much better screen hardware I feel that Google pretty much practiced with the N1. I too have issues with 3g now and then and battery life for me is abysmal. However, I do love the phone and I plan to keep it until the newest next thing comes out like I normally do.

Do I keep staring at my ultra-reliable Bold 9700 on my desk everyday thinking I should go back to it? Sure I do. But it cant hold a candle to how much more I can accomplish on the full touch screen and speed of the N1.

To the OP though, its not just the N1 owners who would feel the same way you do. Check other forums out. See what Nokia N97 owners are saying, Xperia 1 owners are saying and Samsung Omnia owners are saying etc....

Its all the name of the game and you gotta pay to play.

Just one simple question - why you not exchange it? It is so simple:
1.Call HTC
2.Receive new phone
3.Send your phone

and become the one who has "no issues"

i know it sucks if you're not happy with your device, but you really should just sell it and move on. i couldnt be happier with the nexus one. i've gone thru so many devices in the past few years (i'm a phone junkie!), and i will tell you that i've gotten some really horrible devices. compare the nexus one and it's one of the best i've had. so putting things in perspective, i just dont agree. but if you are having some serious problems, you should either return the device while you can, or just sell it and move on. no harm in that.

Thanks all. I'm not trolling. It was difficult to write and not feel like a troll, some may say I am, that's fine, but I am not looking to argue or dispute these things, these are just my observations.

I appreciate any advice.

I would have to say that my N1 is my #1 favorite phone of all time, it just has a TON of issues and I feel that Google and HTC have been reckless with this venture.

I have changed sim cards more times than I can count. This is my 2nd unit, my first one bricked for no reason what so ever days after I bought it.

I would love to send it in to HTC, but of course they want to put a $600 hold on my credit card, investigate it for weeks and then send me another unit, probably refurbed that will still have the same 3G issues, etc.

I want to state for the record, I think the N1 is amazing! It simply does not work in a reasonable manner and Google "closing the 3G investigation" is a joke. OK....so now what? Just... "My bad!"?

I will probably sell it and get another device. I am considering switching carriers too as I use it for business and travel with my partners who have T-mobile/GSM service... I figure going CDMA would probably benefit us offering a broader coverage map put together.

I'm sorry if there are any fanboys I have offended who cannot accept criticism, but there are a lot of issues with this phone, and I'm not the first to say it....I also won't be the last. I don't hate Google, or HTC even, I just feel this was a TERRIBLE phone when all things are said and done.

I am also waiting to see if the new iPhone is going to Verizon or CDMA at all... I actually like Sprints EVO 4G and am kind of waiting for that too, as I hate to get an iPhone and leave my beloved Android OS behind.

Some of you can find my other thread returning my bricked phone and see how that worked out for me... I have just been severely dissapointed, and I am trying to point out I personally feel like canceling it coming to Verizon and claiming there are already so many other handsets is a copout... them admitting the phone is severely flawed, but not taking any actions.

Sorry to cause a riot. I know this looks a feel like a troll thread, but I am not intentionally trying to start a war. Just wondering if anyone feels the same. I will say I don't believe that a lot of people don't agree with me, they have probably already just sold their handset and got something else.... so they aren't replying here.

Probably what I am destined to do.... we will see, but overtime my phone seems to be working worse and worse...and I DREAD the thought of having to deal with HTC ever again.

Thanks.

Uhhhh.... yeah. Sounds to me like your bad. You criticize the OS, the phone, the carrier, but you never look at the fact that two solutions remain that your too much of a baby to try; either send the phone in to HTC and get the issue possibly fixed, or else root the thing and push a new radio image onto it, and try to fix the issue on your own. and hyper, start committing to your decisions like a man. Sell the bold that sits on your shelf collecting dust and sell or fix the n1 and pick something you won't whine about , that you'll have some semblance of brand loyalty for. :)

I will just assume you haven't read anything I have said....

A. I have already swapped it out once
B. Root it and risk voiding the warranty so I can't send it back in (?)
C. I have swapped SIM cards and manually updated the radio through the bootloader without unlocking and rooting
D. I have changed SIM cards several time.. .I am and HAVE tried to fix it

Honestly, when you talk about OS and brand loyalty too, didn't I just say I didn't want to abandon Android as an OS and the next major purchase as far as a handset goes is an HTC? ( I am aware you are talking to someone else, but still)

I am opening discussion, asking if others feel the same, searching for solutions, and venting a little...possible venting a LOT... It's responses like these talking about "brand loyalty" that make these troll threads....

No one here has any reason to blindly follow any OS or brand, and if they do.... well I think it's foolish. I personally REALLY like Android for an OS at the moment and HTC handsets. (I just feel the N1 wasn't one of their best releases and they are not addressing customers and issues in a reasonable manner)

If something more functional, cooler, faster, etc comes by tomorrow, don't think I won't change my mind... Sorry some of us think for ourselves.

Not surprising that you feel this way and I imagine that there are many other N1 owners who feel the same but can't nut up to say the same. It takes a realist to see their device for what it is. Many times, you have users who are just blind to the weaknesses or current state of their phone/device. Trust me, I'm a DROID owner, so for a while there, you want to defend it tooth and nail. But eventually, you have to concede the fact that it's not everything it was cracked up to be. Honestly, I saw this coming for the N1 moreso than with the DROID. At the launch, Google made it very clear that this was going to be one in a long line of future devices. It was the impetus to drive innovation, but was never supposed to be "king of the hill" for long. Then there were statements that the N1 was supposed to be a test-bed device. But you're right... abandoning the 3G issue, poor support, touchscreen still an issue (when it's clearly fixed on the Incredible), not on the VZW, etc. How about the fact that the tech was obviously at HTC's disposal but chose not to include them in the N1, but subsequently in phones like the Desire, Evo and now Incredible. These are bad signs.

Yeah and as you note, youre seemingly unwilling to take full advantage of the warranty anyways, since you won't send the thing back, you're just gonna bitch and moan till a new iPhone comes out because you're scared of bring without the warranty.... the very thigh you won't use lol

Sweet irony!

Again... it's great for you to make low blows and just try to fight with me, but it's obvious you haven't read my other posts. My first return/exchange with them was an epic disaster and took weeks..... I am willing to do it, if I thought it would help, but I am not the only one with these issues leading me to believe it is not just the handset, but maybe several handsets or a batch of them.

I'm not "bitching and moaning"....I am asking for other people opinions.

The irony is that you have such a sharp tongue and are so quick to hurl insults when it is obvious you have no idea what you are talking about.

I'm not "seemingly unwilling", I am cautious with my time and money as the first time around this wasted a lot of my time and tied up my money for no reason what so ever.

I am open to suggestions and ideas, but I refuse to continue to have a battle of wits with an unarmed man.... or woman...idk. (<- not a jab, just making sure "sexist"" isn't another lie you can add to your list of insults)

Thank you for saying something well thought out, reasonable, helpful, and supportive.

I am dumbfounded by those who are infatuated with something to the point they cannot even see it has a few short comings. I have NEVER seen a perfect handset. Not once...ever.

All I was trying to get at for us N1 owners, especially those of us who have been screwed around by HTC before is exactly what you are saying... It just looks like a bad sign for N1 owners and I am not happy about them "officially closing" the 3G investigation. Also another bad sign.

For the record, to the other poster, I AM waiting for the iPhone 4 because I have no idea what it has to offer besides the tear downs and specs leaked thus far.

Again, I am open minded... right now It's Android 100%... if they will take the exclusivity off with AT&T and add some much needed features, I might go iPhone. I am not going to commit myself to something for life or years...especially in the tech industry when things change in weeks and months, not years.

Thanks again Sooperdroid.

I don't want to downplay N1 owners because you guys were the braves one, willing to jump into the Google experiment. As such though, you guys are stuck in the in between -- never getting the full HTC support because it's not quite an HTC phone, and at the whim of Google support which depends really on if they're motivated enough to provide it for you all. And you really don't have a carrier to complain to because T-Mo (or at&t) are under strict orders that it's not their phone. So, it's like being on an island, wondering if you'll be rescued, remembered or completely forgotten and left behind.

But here's one thing you can still hold your device up high about: You will likely get 2.2 with no issues. Whereas devices like the Incredible will likely be slow to adopt the new OS due to Sense, and other integration issues. Just look at the Eris/Hero, which have been out much longer than the DROID and the Eris brothers are still pining over an official update. So, don't abandon the N1 just yet...

I just find it hilarious that the Nexus One listed Verizon was one of the carriers at launch and then ATT got it before them, and then it was dumped altogether on Verizon while Sprint will still get theirs--in addition to the HTC EVO 4G... Ah... the boys at Google are showing a little wear and tear from the years of success they've been having.

I was thinking about this last night. You make a good point. Google has no incentive to abandon the N1 and the chances are good that it will be their "pet device", the one that gets their attention and the goodies that they cannot release on other devices due to time constraints regarding approval, or outright refusal by carriers. My gut tells me Google will take care of us nexus owners, but by the same token we should not put our heads in the sand and pretend the Nexus has been everything that Google had hoped. Verizon was supposed to be the carrier that put the Nexus over the top...now Google is going to have to count on the long haul for Nexus One adoption. It can still happen imo, since Google is known for getting customers one at a time. They never leave once getting in to the Google ecosystem. Would have been easier thru Verizon, tho.:D

I don't own one of these yet, but I've been reading a lot.

I forget where I read it, but somewhere they mentioned changing the settings for network to "select automatically".

I'm sure you've already done this too, but I thought I'd post. :)

I just googled and found where I read it:

How To Fix Google Nexus One 3G Issues On T-Mobile – SoftSailor

ETA: There's differing responses on the comments that might help as well. One said their phone shipped with automatic, and switching it to t-mobile helped, and another said changing authentication type to none helped.

This phone rocks as is. Sure N1 is a bit of a trailing edge beta test for Google/Android. Good on Google as this phone is more stable than my laptop running Leopard.

I would be lying if I say I was not counting on flash to work reasonably well on this phone when it hits Android. That is when the entertainment value of this phone goes way up.

Google won't leave this phone hanging, but Android is their focus. New phones means new opportunities for them. That's ok with me. I'll upgrade in 12 months or so.
