Some Eris good news, for a change!

For the shortsighted few that always seem to have heartburn about the Eris' lot in life, consider this - granted, I've upgraded to 2.1 but:

I go on a trip and use Google's navigation - works great (and I'm a long time Garmin user). While navigating, I'm streaming Pandora over my cars audio system - never skips or blips in 3-4 hours. When the nav voice comes on, Pandora music fades out. When nav voice is done, music comes back on - just like you'd expect.

In the middle of navigating + Pandora, I get a call on my phone. Hit Accept, all other audio mutes and call comes over my car audio. Call done, music back on. Didn't remove device from dash holder.

Have work and personal voice mails sent to Google Voice vmail. I decline a few calls and Google Voice transcribes them and notifies me in the Notification Bar. Touch the screen and read all vmails - no number punching into Verizon's 1980's vmail system. Still navigating and streaming Pandora by the way.

During this time I'm also getting notified of work and personal emails. Occasionally check them with no interruption of other functions. Oh yes, and weather is being updated continuously with temp being displayed in Nav bar whenever I am there. Would have been notified of any National Weather Alerts had they occured. Also did a few voice searches along the route too.

Now, I see some wanting to dump the Eris in favor of the Incredible - a great device to be sure. But my question is what's the urgency? Basically, any review you read points out all the 2.1 + Sense functionality which is what I've been using for a month or more now. Sure, it's a little faster, has a better screen and camera but nothing worth breaking a VZW contract for - or paying the non-contract price. My point is if you have an Eris, upgrade it and use it. It is an amazing device even compared to some more recent devices. In another 9 mo to a year all of us are going to be looking forward to an even better LTE device anyway. The Incredible jumpers are out more money, contractly bound longer and didn't get much more.

I agree 100% with this.
Of course the Incredible is the latest and greatest. It will do everything the Eris does and then some...

But people her seem to think the Incredible will be without problems... without any lag, glitches, or any other problems that happens to ALL phones/computers.
Like it has been said before many times. If you simply like to have the latest and greatest, then go for it.
But like the OP stated, the Eris is a great phone! And dont start off expecting too much from the Incredible like many obviuously did with the Eris.

i can agree with the both of yous... Ive read some current reviews and its a siginificant step up hardware wise, but if you're broke like me and have already taken advantage of your upgrade w/ vzw, then, just root your phone. Ive done that and couldnt have been happier with my device. since ive roooted, im running 2.1 w/ the same sense ui ive seen running on the incredible. ive had live wallpapers installed, but only useable on the stock 2.1 home, i didnt think id ever dibble dabble with home replacements but i installed helix and its the best thing i couldve ever installed over stock home 2.1. Google nav w/ voice guidance works like a charm. And currently for root users, there is a rom being cooked with sense ui and live wallpapers running together, just as with the incredible. live wallpapers currently runs fine, and oh!! i have a radio update that takes the heat off my battery. I think my phone is currently up to speeed with the latest and greatest w/ the exception of hardware differences, but in the reviews, there are as much cons as pros with that device. I dont know if the eris will ever be overclocked, due to htc not releasing all of the kernels to do that but i think in about a year and a half when im due for another upgrade, there will be a device that will be even more 'Incredible' than the current one being released shortly.

People have their reasons for going to the Incredible. Some are legit and some are just foolish and ignorant.

Most people focus on the bad because it prevents them from doing the good. You can't make a phone call because the dialer lags. You can't have a full conversation because the speaker dies out in the middle of it. You run around with a charger because it doesn't make it past eight hours of use for some.

To make silly compensations, like clearing the call history is stupid. On my EnV, I had never erased my call history for almost two years. When I started college in 2007 to last summer, I had all my calls remaining in the history, including the call I made to my then-new-roommates for directions. The EnV never lagged.

Whether it's the hardware or the software, something about this phone isn't right. You can do things to block out the negatives, but you shouldn't have to do it and that's what frustrates most people.

Sure, the Incredible isn't guaranteed to be perfect, but it wasn't a rushed product like the Eris seems to have been (rebundled Hero internals in a new case as an entry-level Android phone alongside the Droid). There's a pretty good chance it works flawlessly given how much it's overtaking the N1 as the best phone on the market.

About your journey, that's great it worked well. There are times where I don't care how the phone is working, I just use it, and it works fine and at the end of the day I really appreciate how well it worked and how it caused me no problems. There was an article about a month ago about an editor and his N1 that he used as just a navi and after only three hours or so of use, it was burning hot from use. Whether it was network issues or what, I dunno, but it really brought up some concerns about whether these features were supposed to just work in the showroom to sell the phone or if they truly were functional features.

I stick to my in-car Navigation. Hasn't led me astray yet and it's reading maps from a DVD. For music, I got my iPod. I'd just need the phone for texting, the calls, and internet if I were to go on a long trip. I think it would work fine for me too.

OP is right, it's an excellent phone, especially with 2.1 on it.

It's funny because AT&T is always bragging that you can talk on the phone and browse the web simultaneously on their network. But I always laugh at those commercials, because I know that their phones never have enough service to make or receive phone calls in the situations where they claim to be doing that, like in someone's apartment, in an elevator, at a restaurant...

I'm even willing to stipulate that the Incredible is a better device because of the hardware improvements - kind of like the Eris' big brother. Even though I could sell my Eris and buy the Incredible, it's just not that much of an improvement to me. An HTC Scorpion with LTE - now that's an upgrade!

Of course, the Eris isn't perfect but my experience is that the more power I'm given the more I try to exploit it. The fact that Apple and MS limit their multi-tasking is a way to keep the phone performing well. Android will let you run it into the ground, if you wish or not.

I agree completely with this post, I love my phone. Does it have its' issues? Of course, heck, the touch input just forced quit on me and the keyboard is lagging a little bit because of it, but it isn't anything to make me rush out and get a new phone over. I'll admit, I'm still in the 30 day period on my contract and on Thursday I'm gonna go in to the store and play with the Incredible for a bit, but it will have to completely astonish me to make me return the Eris for it.

well the main thing that would sell me is that the camera now has a flash. other than that i would just install the evil eris 1.2 rom and have an older irish twin of the incredible. oh and btw? How much do you think i can sell my rooted eris for, with all of my paid, free apps and all of my favorite roms backed up on my sd card, car and wall charger included with plastic protective case and screen protectors???? just curious. feedback on thiis one please...

I agree with the OP that the bashing is usually undeserved. I will say that I get excited at the thought of new technology and the Incredible is a greater phone in terms of speed, memory, phone, etc. Nothing wrong with people getting excited about the latest tech. I don't think it lessens what you have, it's just the next best thing.

The eris in my opinion is ahead of its time. HTC is a great brand and knows how to make classy, well built, phones. Those who will break their contract to get an incredible are the same which would upgrade thru computer every month or 2. It's just overkill and there's no practical reason for it

That's a really good point about the call history. It's a silly bug, and I bet HTC could solve it if they tried, so it's sad that they clearly didn't.

For me, though, I hated the fact that I couldn't connect to my work web site on my enV2 because Verizon decided that GoDaddy SSL certificates weren't valid. There's so much my dumb phone couldn't do that my smart phone can.
