Root [International] ECHOE Rom

Echoe ROM 4.4 KitKat v2 coming soon! :)

Caution: Be advised that this is based on the S4 Google Edition, GT-i9505G, KitKat release and therefore lacks any of the Samsung frills, (i.e. very spartan), and that not all apps on the Play Store are 4.4 ready yet. Also be careful with mods for the same reason. No KitKat modem yet. A Factory Data Reset is required and do not restore backups/settings from previous ROMs. Please read the Echoe ROM KitKat xda thread very carefully and thoroughly before installing.

OK you bunch of pussies... just completed a vanilla install of KitKat v1.1.

Everything, so far, seems to be working. Missing loads of options that the Sammy ROMs offer. Haven't worked out how to do a sreenshot yet. Camera is very basic and stores on internal memory although I believe there is a fix for that. Haven't worked out how to disable the lock screen either, as I do not use it.

Need to flash some mods to get rid of the on screen nav bar??? (An on screen nav bar for the i9505???), plus a few other sundry annoyances.

Will report back. ;)

A guess but I think screenshot might be volume down and power button :)

As for the navigation I really don't know,I know on the mix up aosp roms it's possible to add or remove it, but not sure on the ge Rom.sorry

That's the jobby for screenies. Tried different mods from Echoe to get rid of the on screen nav bar... but no joy. Who the **** puts an on screen nav bar on an i9505, anyway?

Steady on old boy, you're too old to be suddenly developing a sense of adventure.....

Hawker... Syd... careful... I'm getting my dangly bits in a twist over this one! :ahhhhh:

Having problems with my personalised Alarm, Notification, Ringtones, in .ogg format.

Don't immediately get dial pad when pressing phone. Quite like the Contacts though, with a light background.

Still cannot disable the screen lock completely. Getting on my tits!

Don't like the drop down Notification panel that much. Too fart arsey!

Wanam doesn't like this ROM.

The custom background, (a la Vista PC), is a pain.

Using Nova launcher as I don't like the other 2, (Launcher? & Google Search launcher).

Camera is Box Brownie compared to the Samsung 4.2.2 one. Saves to internal.

No gesture features or Air, obviously.

Gallery shows ALL photos. No choice of disabling Picasa one's. Could pose problems for your's truly! :s:

Some screenies...

Nova launcher + NAV bar

Settings + custom background

Phone on 1st press

Phone after selecting dialler

Contacts

Actually, on the subject of Thailand and this ROM... PHUKET! :banghead:

DjeMBeY Modified Slim Stock ROM MKE nandroid... here I come! :dancing2:

loving 1.1

the multi dpi along with KK launcher are awesome and the NAV bar is just the icing on the cake for me

i switched nfc off as its something i dont use and battery life is now awesome, even back on the sgs2 i was always a fan of AOKP:D

do i miss all the bloat from TW, not even slightly

i see omnirom is now 4.4.1, hmmmmmmmmmmmmm

looks like the camera issues are about to get fixed

Ironass you need gravitybox not wanam on this rom, totaly different kettle of fish and Gravitybox is as good as wanam if not better

see thats why i think im going to wait for more aosp roms, i like the two panel notification/toggles, but i like to customise them and have just the toggles come down unless there are any notifications :)

I do like the 3minit mod more than some of the aokp mods which is why im still sitting back on MGA, but not for long, as my new laptop arrived the other day :)

I've never tried gravitybox, nor indeed any google-based ROM on the S4.
On the S2, I found RootBox was the best on offer.
For the S4 however, if I was to go onto a Google/AOSP/AOKP type ROM, I would stick with 4.3.1 for the time being, at least until the Kang team and their sub-devs get their teeth into 4.4.
SlimBean seems to be a very good one for example.

OK... my post #208 was done hastily as I was getting the hurry up to get moving as I was the +1 at a wedding over the weekend and needed a working phone with a good camera and video and I'd spent 4 or 5 hours trying to get this with Echoe KitKat.

Since my post there have been more mods that address my complaints and my latest comments are in blue...

Having problems with my personalised Alarm, Notification, Ringtones, in .ogg format.

Solved this by moving ringtones, alarms and notifications to phone memory.

Don't immediately get dial pad when pressing phone. Quite like the Contacts though, with a light background.

Still a pain. I like to go straight to dial pad when I want to.

Still cannot disable the screen lock completely. Getting on my tits!

Still cannot disable the lock screen on this build.

Don't like the drop down Notification panel that much. Too fart arsey!

Can get used to this and it is modifiable so that when there are no notifications, the settings are displayed automatically. Not as good, IMHO, as the scrolling, Quick Settings icons on 4.3.

Wanam doesn't like this ROM.

In my haste I forgot to add... "You have to use Gravity Box in conjunction with Xposed." Again, IMHO, not as comprehensive as Wanam.

The custom background, (a la Vista PC), is a pain.

Thankfully, there has been a release of just a black background in the kitchen... labelled, "negra".

Using Nova launcher as I don't like the other 2, (Launcher? & Google Search launcher).

I still prefer my Nova launcher with its myriad of settings, to the 2 basic ones that are offered.

Camera is Box Brownie compared to the Samsung 4.2.2 one. Saves to internal.

With the aid of Phone2SD it is possible to save photos to the external SD card but the fact remains that the camera is still a long way behind the Samsung 4.3 version.

No gesture features or Air, obviously.

There are still loads of features that Samsung built in to enhance the S4 that are missing on this ersatz Google Edition. It actually makes you appreciate how much effort and input that Samsung put into the S4.

Gallery shows ALL photos. No choice of disabling Picasa one's. Could pose problems for your's truly! :s:

Unlike the Samsung 4.3 gallery, you cannot select to hide/not show, certain albums or stuff that is not on the device... such as sync'd Picasa/Google photo albums.

There has also been a mod, at the request of a great number of users, to get rid of the on-screen Nav bar. Sorry iT0mm0, IMHO, still as much use as tits on a bull.

There is also a mod to restore the Google boot animation, which I preferred to the fancy Echoe one.

Still no transparent Notification bar although you can have a transparent drop down Notification screen.

Most of my apps work fine with this 4.4 release, Handcent, K9 Mail, PowerAmp, Titanium, etc; with the notable exception of the MX video player. However, the stock video player does work.

Bottom line... if you don't mind the spartan feel of the Google Edition ROM and can be bothered to flash a few mods and are not too fussed about the camera, this is a usable ROM.

I, for my part, was eager to try out the new ART that replaces dalvik but I am given to understand that this ROM has dalvik as ART does not like deodexing.

Echoe v1.2 flashed and the camera has gone from a Box Brownie to a Kodak Instamatic. Have managed to get a transparent notification bar with Nova launcher but still cannot disable the blasted lock screen, (option greyed out), or select which albums to display in Gallery.

If you are a fan of no frills, "pure", Android ROMs, such as Nexus and CyanogenMod, then this is a very usable 4.4 release without ART. IMHO, it offers nothing over 4.3.

I flashed Echoe v2 before embarking on a trolley dash around the French hypermarkets, for my much needed Christmas provisions, and updated to v2.1, yesterday.

In spite of my earlier comments, these latest two releases, based on the much improved, stock Android 4.4.2, are a lot better... once I had taken the time to get rid off the Echoe team's, "enhancements", such as the Echoe boot animation, on screen Nav bar, etc:

The latest, stock Nexus 5, "Focal", camera is an improvement on the built-in GE camera. The lock screen problem I had on earlier builds has been resolved too.

OK, you have to be willing to make compromises if, like me, you like the stock Samsung firmware based ROMs such as DjeMBey's. Having said that, it is blooming fast and slick. I used it all the time on the stock faux123 kernel with no problems whatsoever. No RR's or FC's. I used the kernel as-is and battery life, considering that this GE, (Google Edition), ROM has no Power Saving feature that I like, was not too shabby. I think that a lot has to do with the stock Android 4.4.2 firmware as this fixes certain problems encountered on the original KitKat 4.4 and 4.4.1 releases. I believe there is already a 4.4.3 version on the Android drawing board. It will be interesting to see which version is eventually released for the GT-i9505/i9500 by Samsung, hopefully in late January.

As there have been no further stock Samsung 4.3 releases from Samsung for awhile, I may just give this Echoe v2.1 ROM a run for a few days.

For those of you, like myself, who are on the Echoe KitKat, Android 4.4.2, v2.1, ROM, there is a new version of the ktoonsez kernel for the Google Edition... Google Edition KITKAT 4.4 VERSION:. This kernel comes with its own KTweaker app and allows for greater flexibility in u/v'ing and u/c and o/c'ing plus a host of other features.

In the past, I have not been the biggest fan of ktoonsez's kernels but he claims that this most recent release cures the Random Reboots that some people have experienced whilst using the faux123 kernel that comes with Echoe KitKat, v2.1.

As a side note... I do wish that Hawker would crack on and join me in 2014 with the KitKat ROM so that he can bring out some compatible scripts for 4.4.2. Most notably, the KernelClean script, as it is a pain in the neck to do it all manually!

(Hawker has informed me that his scripts should work on 4.4.2... now he tells me! :hmpf: )

EDIT!!! Bum! Just noticed that Echoe KitKat v.2.2 is uploading and contains, amongst other things, the new ktoonsez kernel.
