Root 4.4.1 Update?

Like a lot of others, I am patiently awaiting the update from Google.

2 Questions please..........

Question 1..............

I have TWRP installed as a custom recovery. Have been told that the OTA will not work with this recovery installed.

Is there a way to uninstall just TWRP recovery, get the update and then re-install TWRP?

Question 2..............

Have also been told that Google will take up to a few weeks to roll out this update? Anyone know why it would take a company the size of Google and with the wealth that this company has to take this long to update the N5? Surely they have not sold as many N5's as lets say Samsung selling the S4?

I guess I am inpatient but come on Google.............you must possess the resources needed to get this update out there for your customers?

If you're rooted and have a custom recovery, why are you waiting on an OTA? Go flash a custom 4.4.1 ROM. There are already a few available.

From what I understand the update just basically fixes the camera issues.
There is a camera patch that you can install and you will be as good as gold until the next update.

There is more fixes than just the camera, but that is the first one people notice.

The camera lag is fixed, but there are other very noticeable updates. The speaker is MUCH louder now. Standby battery life is improved. The radio is updated and I have noticed that it holds signal better and faster indoors, at least on T-Mobile.

It also increases the frequency of the led light flashing when you have notifications. Just noticed that one recently.

OK, you guys have me convinced.
I am running as rooted, unlocked bootloader, & TWRP. I have Xposed and Gravity Box installed.
I have downloaded the 4.4.1 file that says it is KOT49E from KRT16M (long file name), do I just flash it through my TWRP custom recovery?

Either do that or use adb to sideload it through the stock recovery.

hi i did not update mine yet. i read posts in xda that people are noticing lower signal strength. even though i am on metro, the phone uses t-mobile towers. so you are positive that signal is better on t-mobile?

Yes the signal is better for me now on Tmobile as well.
I have LTE in areas where I did not before.

No.

Since you have Xposed and Gravity box installed, you are no longer on the stock ROM. You will need to remove the gravity box module, and then uninstall Xposed framework. Assuming you have done no other system changes, you can then download the 4.4.1 file to your phone, and reboot into twrp, and install from there. You should probably reflash SuperSU from TWRP at this time as well because the update will make you lose root. (if you don't reflash superSU at this time, no worries - you can reflash it later)

(Note: if you have made other system changes, like changing DPI in build.prop, or removed any system apk, or modified any system file, you will need to revert all those back to stock before you should attempt to flash the 4.4.1 update. Else, there is a good change that the update will not work.

Now, boot back up, let it optimize your apps etc, and then make sure that everything is working on. Reboot once, and then, you can install Xposed and the modules that you may want.

Lenny... I used TWRP to flash the update. I didn't want to wait for the OTA... so I just downloaded the zip and used TWRP to flash it. Worked fine. Then had to re root.

Yes. That is my experience. In addition in areas where my signal used to constantly switch between LTE and HSPA but basically had no bars on LTE and 3 or 4 bars on HSPA, now my phone usually just hangs onto H and stays there. That's good for the battery as well.

I am so annoyed with my Nexus 5 reception now compared to the LG Motion I had that I am thinking of returning it as I am tired of no signal where I had strong signals with the Motion... I sure hope the 4 4 1 makes a huge difference or back it goes..

You're using a completely different network with the Nexus than you were with the motion. Firmware updates can make minor changes to how connections hold, but not a vast improvement in total strength. If T-Mobile's network isn't very good in your area, there's always an AT&T MVNO.

Straight Talk, Net10, AIO, and Consumer Cellular are popular ones. Though the tracfone companies (Straight Talk & Net10) have horrible customer service that will make you want to gauge your eyes out if you ever need to contact them. However they offer the best deal with Unlimited talk & text and 2.5 gb of data before throttling on AT&T's network for $45 dollars. AIO has better customer service, but have default throttling to 8mbps until you hit your cap of 2.5GB($55 dollar plan) or 7GB($70 dollar plan) at which time you're throttled to EDGE speeds. Consumer Cellular is another one that can be really cheap if you don't need a lot of minutes, however last I checked they don't offer LTE, only HSPA+. And they don't offer any data above 2GB. Then there's direct AT&T GoPhone which is $60 dollars for unlimited talk & text and 2GB of data, but it doesn't have the throttling to 8mbps that AIO has, or the strict TOS and crappy customer service that Straight Talk or Net10 have.

MVNO = Mobile Virtual Network Operator.
Basically, Verizon, Sprint, AT&T and T-Mobile own all the towers in the US. All the other networks, Straight Talk, Metro PCS, Boost, Virgin Mobile, etc., are MVNO's that lease network access from one of the big 4 and use their assigned frequencies. In some cases a Carrier may operate their own MVNOs, like AT&T and AIO.

The MVNO's offer month to month rather than contract plans. So if you want to try AT&T but not sign a contract, you seek out an AT&T MVNO or use Gophone (AT&T's official non-contract servivce, which really is a carrier operated MVNO).

If one was to update 4.4 stock rooted nandroid (initial backup) on TWRP to 4.4.1 would it carry over to the remaining backups on device such as Catalysm ROM back up. Or would you just flash devs 4.4.1 update?

And vise versa?

Nothing you do will affect the state of the nandroid backups you made.

I'd suggest just flashing the new radio and boot loader, followed by the cataclysm update and your kernel of choice (if any)

I can officially take back what I said about the new radio. I have noticed decreased performance because for the first time since LTE got turned on in my area, I dropped down to HSPA. I also use to get weak LTE while at work, but now I only get weak HSPA. It seems to show less bars on the signal indicator overall, though the dBm's seem to be about the same, maybe slightly less.

Luckily I still have the KRT16M factory image downloaded so I'm going to reflash the radio from that when I get home from work and see if that helps.

We almost never know what changes happen on the radio level, so its anyone's guess what changed
