New to S2 little lost could use help.

On so im new to the S2 and im having trouble understanding what I need to do to install the CM11 rom.

Im rooted on stock 4.1.2 (GC01) with AGAT_GB27_kernel #v1.4.2

I see on the CM11 thread it says
*Flash a safe recovery (if required)
*Flash an ICS modem (if required)

Im not sure what is considered a safe kernel; and what modem do I use?

Sorry for my noob post but compared to every other phone ive used (flash a zip and done) this has me lost and I dont want to guess and kill my new phone.

Right now you are on a jelly bean modem (baseband). Alll AOSP ROMs require an ICS modem. FL24 being the most recent of these. Recovery is a bit different on this phone the recovery is tied to the kernel, so you are flashing in a kernel with recovery. For making nandroid backups you need to use the recovery kernel that is compatible with the ROM you are on. For the ROM you are on you can use this one for that. For Flashing most ROMs the most common is EL26 or EL29

For CM11 there is an intermediate step involved. You should check this thread post. It will be of help to you if you are wanting to try out CM11

Thanks for the welcome. I just came from the ZTE Warp (great community) so this phone is way more complex & im a bit lost.

Im rooted and on this kernel already.

How do I go about putting the FL24 modem on my phone?

Yes oden is easy to use to install a recovery kernel.

CM11 is something I want to try and I've already downloaded the VILLUMINATI-12042013-d710.zip & pa_gapps-modular-mini-4.4-20131126-signed.zip

But im not sure what recovery kernel to use and how to do the CM11 flash properly.

you woulf flash the modem in via CWM recovery for the zip file of the modem, or PC Odin for the .tar file of the modem. Mobile Odin will not do modems on our phone. Only do the modem when you are ready to flash as data will not work on the stock JB ROM once you change the modem.

The last paragraph in the thread post I linked to explains that you need to flash Hood pope 4.3 and use its recovery to get to CM 11. The CM11 requires a newer recovery to install and apparently Hood Pope 4.3 has it.

Do note that your recovery changes as you flash to a new kernel.

The repository contains files you will need, this is a good resource as you can even get a one click install of your stock ROM from here, this is for EL29 direct boot

This phone may seem a bit complicated at first, but once you get into it, you'll see it is not too hard. I keep the recovery kernels of EL26 and EL29 handy and can flash one of them in when flashing to a new ROM then boot to its recovery and continue flashing the ROM.

Got fl24 modem

Also got hood pope.

Now if im getting this right I should:
* oden el29 kernel
* Boot to the cwm recovery
* Flash fl24 modem
* Flash hood pope
* Boot to new recovery that came from hood pope
*Flash cm11
*flash gapps
*Enjoy

Im sure this will get easier but atm this seems crazy.

Yeah, that is how I understand alpha2k had to do it. Part of what makes this involve more steps is that the recovery is linked to the kernel on this phone, and not a stand alone thing like it is for other phones like the Prevail. Lucky it is only for when you are switching the ROM. If you are just doing a nandroid or flashing in a mod to your existing ROM then you are just using the recovery you have with the ROM.

The best way I've found is the following steps and I hope they make since:

This isn't in any specified order, as long as you get the files.
Downloads are:
1: Download a modem (I personally found fi22 to be the best....at least for me, I've tried a few others but had the ebst stability and connect times with fi22, not sure if that's a placebo affect or not, but its what i use anyways.)

2: Download Hoode pope

3: Download el29 directboot kernel, in tar form or another form....I have a zip form that can be flashed from recovery if somone would like it let me know I'll post it..


Steps to install are and these are in this order:
1: Install el29 directboot, via flash, or odin or mobile odin, (they all work the same except for teh flash which you have to reboot to recovery, the rest auto reboot to el29 recovery automatically)

2: Install hood pope rom (nothing else because we will be clearing and installing via the hood pope recovery, then there is nothing to get in the way of install, and it's all done via the NEW recovery.

3: Once the rom is installed, go to reboot recovery, (not reboot system) it's under advanced options.

4: Once in the new recovery, NOW we do factory reset, clear cache, clea dalvik.

5: Install the ICS modem, in your case FI24, in my case FI22, either way just pick one and this HAS TO BE ICS, NOT JB OR GB or you won't have data

6: Install the rom

7: Install gapps

If everything went well, you should jsut hit boot to system now and boot into the new 4.4 kitkkat

NICE!!, you should like it.

On a side note, I use nova launcher as it seems to be the smoothest, and everything just works in it. I've tried multiple others and I always land on apex launcher and nova launcher, both are good, but from my finding nova launcher overall was the best.....try out the beta version located here Nova Launcher Beta , that's what I am currently using.

Its so smooth & exciting coming from a phone with only stable GB ROMs and Beta CM10.

Only things bugging me ...
I can't get triangle away to remove the triangle.

Well sadly with Triangle away, I think he said he may not continue it, so that means no getting rid of the triangle unless you use a usb jig, but be careful, I spent $5 on one and it didn't work, even though they claimed it did, the best it's good for now is getting into download mode, sadly

Best I can tell you is flash back, erase the trianle then flash the rom again......not sure exactly the steps to resolve that as I to thought triangle away would work, but it seems that unless the apps upgrade to kitkat, some of them just won't work right. That's the payoff of getting the latest and greatest I spose, things tend not to work the best, unless they accommodate for the new os.
If it bothers ya that much though you could always run hood pope, made by the same person that made this rom, very stable and smooth, and everything works on it, of coarse that's because it's JB and apps just work because they're written for JB.

It's gonna take people awhile to implement the apps and stuff so it's just a matter of wait till they do an upgrade. If not we'll have to find another way around it.

I know Triangle away works on the Stock ROM, now if you do a one click install of a rooted stock, then get mobile Odin pro to install a recovery kernel the triangle doesn't get tripped. Mobile Odin and custom recovery doesn't trigger the triangle. Just PC Odin does.

So what yer saying is...

-Install stock rom
-use triangle away
-Mobile odin the el29 recovery boot
-install hood pope
-reboot to recovery
-install cm11

That should not trigger the triangle?

Also would a rooted stock rom work?

I think it will, because I'm flashing it via the recovery and not in pc odin.
Pc odin seems to be the one that triggers the triangle mainly, but dunno

You have to do the one click stock rooted. Both Triangle away and Mobile Odin Pro needs root to work. If you did stock non rooted you would have to root with framaroot then do Mobile Odin pro. Easier to just start with Stock Rooted.

Nope, doesn't affect it at all usage wise.....and unless you re-boot a lot, you'll rarely see it.

The method mentioned above does however remove it...I am triangle free now (Sounds like an AA phrase or something "triangle free" LOL)

Welcome to the S2 Tig! You should check out the XDA forums for this phone. Well actually the Epic 4G Touch. There's alot of Roms available. Specifically Bilgeren's Project X. Version 3.8 is up right now but he also has a variants page. If your missing your old alien Rom there's one themed just like it. Can't wait to see if you get back into developing Roms for this phone.

Tiger just got rid of his warp huh.. Man it's been like 2 years since I ditched that thing. One thing they had was a great AF community. Other than that the phone itself was horrible. And I didn't even realize it until the s2 came out for boost and I was blown away. I made a nice little one stop in the stickies for ROMs. Kernels and recoveries and a few more things back when I was on the s2. It's probably a little out dated now but it still has allot of useful things that are relevant in it. I'm on the s4 with att now. And I too am running cm11. Kit kat is just amazing

Hey there, hows goes it? I see you have jumped off the stock ROM on your S4. I'm still rocking the S2, toying with the idea of CM11 but have gotten spoiled with constant smooth performance and data speed on the TW JB, so I am just playing the wait and see.
