Sorry Google, But I'm not impressed with the nexus 5.

No rant! My original nexus devices were all pretty expensive and didn't have super high specs, also times have changed and things have advanced quite a bit over the last few years. A lot of people here are getting their panties in a twist. So let me explain.

Camera- I was not and am still not expecting a Nokia flag ship camera here. However I am expecting a decent camera inside a phone. The camera IMO has a lot to do with who is taking the pics. I take pretty good pics, give an average person an iPhone 5s and me something of a lower standard maybe a notch or two down and I can probably match them. I did a thread last year with my iPhone 5 vs the nexus 4, pics were in the same league believe it or not. However with the nexus 5, I'm sorry we should all not have to sit around waiting for an update to make our cameras usable. In the state that its in, its not good at all to me, its actually very very poor. I will save complete final judgment for when I receive the OTA.

The speaker is just wow, how can I say it very bad. The moto x is not a super high end device and it basically blows the nexus 5 out of the water, not a little bit, but a lot. So for this we are waiting on an update to see if it can be fixed at all. I'm not expecting a bose system here, just something decent and on par with some other devices.

The battery needs a little bit of time, but from my first day and a half with it I'm having flashbacks of older phones with less then average batteries. But let's save that for after the update and after a week of use.

The updates- This is a nexus and I completely think everyone on this forum who has a nexus 5 should have gotten the update yesterday or today. No hokey pokey. No phases, no small batches, everyone! As someone stated, Google pumped up this camera quite a bit, and if a software update supposedly fixes it, I think everyone who owns one should have gotten the update ASAP...that's my opinion though. Some say what's a week or two, I didn't buy a nexus to wait a week or two, I bought it to have updates right away. And again, would I be so hard pressed if this update wasn't such a drastic fix? Absolutely not, if this was just a new version and the camera, etc came out of the box as it should, this thread would most likely not exist.

Those as my points, agree with them or not, they are just my points. No Ferrari's here, just maybe a nice middle of the road Benz would be cool...lol

What about the iPhone 5, and iPhone 5S when they were first released? Did they not have issues too? Phone bending, metal scratched, dirt under the camera, and all the iOS 7 bugs. No phone is perfect, but you seem to think all these "high end" phone don't have issues too. I am sorry to have to tell you some of these same things happen to them as well. It makes me much more upset when I pay $600 - $800 for a phone, and it has issues right out of the box. One of the main features of the iPhone 5S was the touch ID. Apple had all kinds of issues with it when the phone was first released.

All these issues take time to fix, and Google is working on that, and have already started to release an update to fix these things. I too have owned ever nexus phone, and this one seems no different from any of the other ones in terms of issues, and fixes. Maybe you are the one that needs to get your panties out of a bunch.

I agree that 4.4.2 should already have been released to all nexus users, but I am willing to wait on Google to send it to me. Be patient and wait and see what the update brings. You have had the phone for how long? Give it some freaking time.

Ultimately sean76 will have to wait for the update to come out. He apprently refuses to sideload it (one of the benefits of having an android phone) since it's been recommended numerous times and has fallen on deaf ears. 4.4.2 is definitely an improvement.

Sucks that the camera and speaker had to be so bad out of the box. I had to crank the volume all the way to make sure I didn't miss any texts (which are literally life and death at my job). I also loaded up different, louder notification sounds to make sure I could hear it and even then still pondered returning to an older phone. Now I would say the speaker volume is adequate. I've actually turned the volume down a little bit. It's no HTC One and music and speech is still overly distorted at louder volume, but at least I can hear it when I need too.

Also you can just do the Google framework thing, and you will get the update.

I have the nexus 5 and came from the s4. I am loving my Nexus and the new update made it even better. Buttery smooth, good camera and battery, nice screen and updates right from Google! What more do u want?

Wait it out a few more days til you get 4.4.2. I've noticed a nice camera change and the speaker has improved.

Maybe the OP doesn't know how to sideload?

Also you can just do the Google framework thing, and you will get the update.

Doing the framework trick is not recommended:

Also, I've cleaned up some bickering. Remember, attack the issues, not each other. Keep it respectful. Everyone is entitled to an opinion.

Its all laid out in the site rules:

The Google Framework trick is both not recommended and a Red Herring - it doesn't work.

As for the update, like I said once before I guess the 4.4.1 OTA was cancelled as a standalone update until the fixes in 4.4.2 were ready.

Since I got 4.4.2 yesterday, I'm happy.

I did the framework trick yesterday and it worked just fine. I have been doing this on my nexus devices for some time now, and I have notice no issues what so ever.

Camera, pretty poor (no update yet) but i have been use to Nokia camera's.

Speakers, pretty poor, having some loss of hearing doesn't help.

Battery,i have no issues but don't surf the web much at all.

All phones have something i don't like about them and have chopped and changed constantly in the last few years trying to find "the 1" but i still haven't found it yet.

I'm hoping the update will contribute to a better handset experience for the 2 items i have small issues with.

Where is my update ?????????????

Update: I got 4.4.2 this morning and yes it makes the camera shutter much quicker.

However I have a hardware problem with my speaker which has nothing to do with software at all. When I record a video, even in a very quite room you can hear fuzz in the background, almost like wind. Who knows, anyway contacting Google this morning.

I've tried it before, and it doesn't make the update come. I guess some people get lucky on the check in and think it works.

Like you though, it didn't cause an problems when I did.

I did it this morning and it worked on the first try...

Copy and pasted from Instructions I used.

1. go to setting / apps then hit the all button at the top
2. scroll down to google services framework and then press it to open
3. hit the clear data button
4. go to settings / about phone / system updates (you will notice the date will be 1969 or 1970 this is ok )
5. hit the check now button
6. if you're lucky, you'll see the 4.4.2 update avaliable
7. hit install or repeat till it works

The framework trick gives your device a new pull from the lottery pool, but its not recommended for the reasons mentioned in the link above

Yea it worked for me right away...luck of the draw I guess...

Doesn't matter as that muffled sound is still present on video audio and I have to give Google a call...this should be fun

Exactly:

"Lucky" and "Repeat till it works" - do not prove that this works. I know how to go about this and tried it multiple times over the years.

Yea fixed the camera shutter speed...that's about it as far as I can see so far. Not really digging to deep into it as I'm sending this one back...

However I will say picture quality is pretty good after the update in both good and low light situations, and while the shutter speed isn't as fast as say an iPhone 5s, its perfectly usable and would be fine for me in everyday use. But I am really hoping the muffled sound isn't super wide spread on audio, because that would be an absolute deal breaker, and a shame because the phone does shoot very good natural looking video.

Google's customer service is quite easy to work with. My 1st phone had a network connectivity issue, and they were responsive and got me a replacement phone on the way with little hassle. For whatever reason, it took almost 2 weeks for the replacement to get to me, but dealing with Google was simple.

He needs to return it and walk away.
Things I've learned from owning far too many smartphones:

1) There is no perfect phone.

2) Pay the price & don't use that as a way to judge the phone.

3) Do your research up front _before_ the purchase

4) Be patient, it pays off most of the time.

5) Focus on what's good, not just what you don't like.

6) Walk away if it's not for you, obsessing won't fix it.

Me?

I haven't met a smartphone I don't like, just some are better than others ...

My Nexus 5 & Note 3 are simply terrific for my usage :)

Remember Palm devices from the 1990s? iPaqs? Geeks and others put up with all the shortcomings of these products and used them anyways. Bugs are part of the price that we pay for an incredible amount of technology at an affordable price.

My wife is quite happy with her Nexus 5 and it's not even on 4.4.2 yet but it will be soon. I use an iPhone and I'm quite happy with it. I also use a Nexus 7 and KitKit was a disaster on it - hopefully 4.4.2 is a lot better.

Lol...I had every Treo

But times were pretty different then. Email was all the rage and there were basically two sets of people...The ones who rocked a blackberry and those who rocked a touch screen palm treo....haaaaa, the good ol days.

I made a small fortune (okay, not really, but $20-30k over 2 years) flashing the Audiovox PPC6700 and HTC Mogul from Verizon or Sprint to Cricket.

In fact, I hated both Android and IOS for almost two years because neither of them was as powerful as Windows Mobile 6.5 was. Now I grab one of those and I barely know how to turn it on. Talk about user-unfriendly.
