Need detailed Calendar/Tasks info

As you can see from my sig below, I'm a longtime PalmOS user. webOS has some nice features, but unfortunately the PIM apps are a major step backward from the PalmOS versions. SO, now I'm considering switching from webOS to Android and the Sprint Hero. The key for me is finding some detailed description or screenshots or video that show how to create events in the Android calendar and how to manage tasks. I really need a step-by-step explanation so that I can judge whether Android will be more efficient than webOS in using the calendar. I do like what HTC has done with Sense and Scenes, which would help me keep my calendar more easily accessible than in webOS. Thanks in advance!

Check out the Hero user manual (available here) for some good calendar info. It's on page 57 of the full user manual.

As for tasks, I think your best bet is going to be a 3rd part application. You can search within the Android Market from your web browser here. Some of the most popular ones (off the top of my head) are Astrid, Action Complete, OpenLoopz, and TooDo.

Oh, and credit for the user manual link goes to SDscorch.

This is all that is listed on page 57 for setting the date of an event:
3. Do one of the following: If there is a time frame for the event, tap the From and To dates and times to set them.
I need the specifics on how dates and times are set. Keyboard entry? Scroll wheels? + and - buttons? Month view calendar popup? Screenshots would be much appreciated, if at all possible.

oh.. i hear ya dude!

on my treo i always had keysuite from chapura - look it up, it was *serious* (read: "needed") outlook-on-my-palm

i'm confident they will have SOMETHING similar in the android world

("they" as in "someone" - not necessarily chapura)

I appreciate the comments and suggestions, but honestly this shouldn't be a hard question to answer. Please, someone with a Hero, create a calendar event and describe the interface used to do it.

hmm.. i just went to the HTC calendar (is that the one you're talking about?) and tapped on the time i want to set an event

it opens up an edit page - you fill-in the blanks (its easy - self-explanatory)

then hit SAVE

kinda annoying that i can't send an invite

[edit - i'm using the LARGE htc calendar widget (full screen version) - don't think that matters though)]

Thank you, Edaze. +rep for you.

One last question -- if you click on the "From" or "To" dates to select a date that way, what pops up to allow you to select the date?

For SDscorch -- there's no game here. It's just a simple question. I don't have a Hero, I can't get to a BB or Sprint store this weekend to find out for myself, the user manual doesn't show this information, and none of the online reviews or videos demonstrate it either. Even the official Android site couldn't answer this. Believe me when I tell you that I diligently searched for my own answers before resorting to asking new Hero owners for help. Efficiency of the UI is a huge feature to me because I use the calendar app so much. Some people care about video recording and flash support. I care about the UI for commonly performed tasks. I'm sorry to have annoyed you.

Not to speak for Scorch, but the site has been extremely slow as of late. It took me 4 attempts just to reply to you. I cant wait to see how many to submit. Anyway, for those of us that own the phone, the steps were childs play... as you saw. Each screen shot was only one press on the screen with the last I removed the keyboard from view and scrolled down a bit.

So with the steps being just as Scorch described and the site working intermittently, I could sorta see the frustrations.

On to your question.

This is some great stuff on the HTC Hero calendar, but what I need to do is

search my calendar entries.

For the life of me, I can't find a way to search for entries in my calendar other than manually swiping left or right while viewing the day in time grid format. This works of course but it has some obvious limitations. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Now I can predict that someone will say that I can use the Gmail Calendar because these entries show up in my HTC Hero calendar and the Gmail Calendar has a search option. This method works, of course, but it's kind of double the work and forces me to depend on the web instead of my phone. I'd prefer to search directly inside the default Hero calendar application.
