Heads up,

If you have not frozen LocalFOTAv2_1308_1_1 and SDM 1.0 yet, you may want to ASAP to prevent a new OTA which was just recently approved:

Whew. I'm glad you said "Verizon". Now I can leave my phone on tonight. If AT&T schedules an update the battery comes out, just to be sure. I only have 24GB free - I can't afford all those "improvements".

If I'm running Hyperdrive on Slot 1 I shouldn't get any kind of notification, right? If you expect I will, is there a step-by-step somewhere on freezing that?

I read that Hyperdrive ROM removes the Samsung and Verizon OTA updaters, so I shouldn't get anything UNLESS I return to Stock Slot and the stock ROM.



Bassjo: Not sure about bricking, but if you're rooted and ROMmed, root will likely be broken, the ability to remove root apps disabled, and Safestrap broken. If Safestrap can't boot, one of two things will happen:

(a) The phone will boot normally into the updated stock ROM and you've lost all your hard work.

(b) The phone will continuously try to boot into a ROM slot that has been disabled, and will be caught in a perpetual bootloop.

Which will happen? I DON'T KNOW! And I don't mean to find out. Anyone wanting to root & ROM need to do so NOW and not accept that OTA.

No it shouldn't if anything it might force you to perform a factory reset, if the update already doesn't do that on it's own (which is shouldn't, but who knows from Verizon)

From the last update MJ7, it seems that those that had root and took the OTA or used Kies just had it disappear on update if they did not use OTA survival mode in SuperSU Pro... however I also read some users report that it disappeared even while using survival mode... so if it is important to keep root I'd wait to see what the verdict is from others if survival mode can hold it or if Kingo will still work afterwords...

Ok. I've not strung together enough free time to really digest the kingo method for rooting the N3. I dont really know what freeze "LocalFOTAv2_1308_1_1 and SDM 1.0" means, except that I'm thinking that if you had root, perhaps those are individual processes.

Work vacation starts friday. I plan to read more about rooting then and getting into Chiefs rooting guide. What should I do until then. Try to avoid updating the new upgrade. is there a way to disable automatic ota acceptance?

You need root to freeze LocalFOTAv2_1308_1_1 and SDM 1.0 with Titanium Backup thats what pulls the OTA , if youre not rooted best you can do is just ignore the update

Once you accept the update and it installs theres no way to go back phone will softbrick if you try

I can verify now Kingo does reroot MJE..

I defrosted all apps, used MJ7 pit and md5 to odin back to stock, took OTA. Used kingo and rerooted, now I'm freezing all the bloat gonna renable xposed again seems to be all good so far

** If wanam no longer gets rid of the custom lock and status, Triangle Away 3.10 "Flash reset counter" and a reboot will get rid of it

Ok my VzW is trying to get me to accept the update. I hit the home button to avoid answering. Hitting cancel just ask me for a timer on when to update. I want to root though. I think I need to do that BEFORE the new update right?

I am on MJ7 right now.

Is following chief s guide the most preferred? Riker your last post confused me but I think I can worry about that later after I root. Using Kingo I think.

Looking for advice on steps that in end end result on me being rooted and having the OTA.

Which then gets me thinking. If Kingo uses slots.. what rooted rom is in the other slot? Something that incorporates the update?

Did you have the slot stuff setup? What that lost after ota? When you say you used Kingo is that like saying you followed the whole entire rooting with Kingo process again? Or somehow just pointed back to the slot you were using?

Why load is the rom in slot 1 built on? If not the new load. Then why the the OTA?

But your goal of having root AND the OTA is a pipe-dream. You simply can't have both at current time.

MD5 is a checksum calculation that ensures your download is good. It runs calculations of the ones and zeros in the file, and creates an MD5 for the file. When you download the file, run a program like WinMD5 to verify the MD5s match. Once it's on your phone, open a file manager like ES File Explorer, Astro or Root Explorer, long-press the file and hit "Properties". It will calculate the MD5 for you.

First, wanted to say that your posts and guide are the reason I took the plunge and rooted this already perfect phone. I really want to thank you for that.
Things have changed since you put up your guide due to the OTA but it is a great start to learning this stuff.
You CAN have root after the OTA and there are 3 roms that work. CleanRom, JellyBeans, and Stock.
Basically you have to Odin back to stock MJ7 using a .tar file. Reboot up and accept the OTA. This will also add new baseband-MJE and kernel. Then just use Kingo to root again. Reinstall safestrap and start all over with the 3 roms that currently work on MJE. I have done all this as have many others.
To Jet,
Take your time and read all the active threads over at XDA Verizon Developement forum. Really make sure you have your head wrapped around the major elements like Kingo, Odin, and Safestrap. Once you do it'll be like a lightbulb going off in your head and you'll jump right in. Or...you won't.

I do not use a rom slot setup, I simply have the stock rom in the stock slot. I was posting because Kingo DOES reroot MJE, what I did was go back to complete stock with odin then took the OTA, then used Kingo to root

Kingo does indeed work to root MJE which was what I posted a few posts back, root/ safestrap wise nothing changed between MJ7 and MJE the big problem would have been if they changed SELinux to Enforcing but it stayed the same

Yes you can take OTA to MJE and use kingo after to root

I used odin because I modify a bunch of stuff in /system, aosp clock, host files from Adaway and any of that can cause the updater script to fail, easier in my case to just go back to complete stock first

You're right. The new OTA apparently does NOT break root. I have updated the Guide to MJE but I find nowhere in the Guide where it says that the OTA will break root. Maybe in the thread comments, but the Guide stops in the OP.

I apologize to my throng of fans ( all 3 of you ) for your patience. You have no idea what RL has thrown at me lately. I will, however, endeavor to do my best to keep the Guide as up to date as possible.

That kinda was what I was thinking, unless the update was substantial or actually fixed things I was complaining about, I'll just stick with what works.

(BTW: I'm not complaining about anything, my note works great.)

I did. But, I also made nandroids of my ROM slots and simply restored them when I was done, so I didn't feel it was that big of a deal.

Personally I didn't have to redo anything datawise. Odin does not erase the userdata partition so when I reflashed it, it just redid /system partition and removed root, then took the OTA, re-rooted and refroze bloatware apps not a big deal at all to be on latest update

Best bet if you are already setup on a custom rom is just flash an MJE based ROM after flashing the MJE modem

I heard mixed reports on if foxfi still works after MJ7. With custom ROM I suppose full tether is allowed. But does foxfi work in MJ7? I am wondering why I would want MJ7 is foxfi is broken. Sorta like touchwiz. Would like root, tether, touchwiz, and frozen bloat I think. I could do that with Kingo on MJE I think. But not on MJ7 from what I hear

If I wanted to update to the latest and greatest firmware... would it be safe to unfreeze all the apps frozen and use Kies 3 to "restore" to the updated MJE factory image then reroot, etc...?
