Upgrade to Nexus 5?

I have been running the stock Galaxy Nexus for almost two years now. Honestly I loved the phone, but the constant problems with it dropping data and slowing to a crawl is making me look towards my next phone. I don't want to loose my unlimited data (if I can help it) so I am looking at outright buying. The Nexus 5 looks appealing. Wondering if any other Galaxy Nexus users are pondering the same upgrade path.

Your options are a bit limited on Verizon, as they don't support the Nexus 5 (and are unlikely to get another Nexus device in the future, but that's another discussion). If I were looking for a new phone on Verizon, I'd look pretty hard at the Moto X. I just got one for the wife and it's a truly epic device.

As codesplice mentioned, your upgrade options are limited based on whether you'd rather have the nexus 5 or keep Verizon.

We have more than a couple members on here who left Verizon for the nexus 5 on either ATT, T-Mobile, or Sprint.

IMO the low outright price is likely one of the many reasons they aren't offering it. They're trying to get people off of the unlimited data plans, and having a $350 top end device wouldn't help

Ah, ok! I was under the impression that the 5 was LTE capable. That kind of narrows it down for me. I live in an area where we have Verizon and AT&T, but Verizon covers the area better and by that, I mean, I can make a call if I am standing outside or within ten feet of my microcell. Verizon has us by the ba**s here.

I was looking at the S4, but maybe I need to give the Moto X another look.

Well, it's also CDMA capable... but only on Sprint's network

To make a very long story short... Verizon and Google don't see eye to eye. I'd be very surprised if Verizon see's another nexus.

Either by Google's choosing or Verizon's or both, it won't be allowed on Verizon's network. The LG rep I spoke with told me the phone was made with Verizon's network in mind. That leads me to believe it was mostly Verizon's decision .

I have been contemplating upgrading for a year now and I finally did a few weeks ago and got the Note 3, it's awesome, love the speed, battery life, and a few of the Samsung features.

Despite the fact that I don't have root I still love this device and it lasts more than a day so it's a keeper in my book.

If I was in your position, I would definitely look into the moto x. Its a fantastic device. It basically almost stock android with added features. Also it gets updates pretty quick. I was close to getting the Nexus 5 but decided to wait for what moto brings in 2014.

The Moto X is a fantastic device. Even straight from buying it, it has great features that really cannot be duped on other devices, no matter how many developers try it never really works quite like the Moto X.

I'd take a look at the LG G2 too.......it's the "brother" to the Nexus 5 without straight from Google updates and LG's skin.

Make sure you are alright with back buttons though. I find them hard to get used to in a phone.

I'm on Verizon so I went to the Moto X in September. Best decision I ever made. Truly is a wonderful phone and with Motorola updating it as often as they have, I have anything I would get with a Nexus 5. I know many people who had the Nexus 4 and too many of them complained about the build quality of their LG made device. I can honestly say that the Moto X is well built and high quality. If you are coming from a Galaxy Nexus you will be very happy with the Moto X.

I've gotten used to them just fine. Cyanogen has finally fixed knock on and knock off but I hardly use it anymore.
Battery life is better, camera and screen debatable.
Both great devices but the N5 wasn't an option for me on Verizon.

I would actually probably use that feature a lot. I just couldn't get used to those back buttons man!

A follow up...

Just this weekend, my Nexus running stock 4.2.2 has managed to stop displaying ALL notifications in the top bar. This means I get no notifications for things like SMS messages, Facebook messages, emails, ect. If someone calls me, the phone never rings. The call goes right to voicemail and I have no indication that the person tried to call me, not even an indication of a voicemail was left for me. This was especially bad this week when I was waiting for my doctor to call me back with results of a brain CT scan I had done for sever migraines I have been having for the last three weeks

Also, my home "soft" key has completely stopped working. When I press it, I get the usual vibration and the screen highlights around it to show that it detects that I am pressing it, but nothing else happens. This results in me having to use the back "soft" key a million times to back out of things back to the home screen. This is especially annoying when I am in a web browser. Depending on how many pages forward I am, I have to back out that many times before I can "exit" to the home screen". Annoying as hell!

I want to buy a new phone, but I have invested in both the Samsung drop in desk charger and the windshield mount.

I would like to try a full factory reset, but before I do that I need to pull everything off of my phone. Last night I tried to do a mass storage drive mount through USB, but I could only get my phone to show like a media device. In the past, I could get it to show like a drive, but now it only shows like a media device. Something has changed.
