MG Activation Questions

I'll be ready to activate my Moto G phone this Friday. I already have a Sim card. When I start the process, will tmo give me the option of which prepaid plan to choose?

Will it give me the choice to use a new number or port my old number? If I choose a new number, I should be able to port old number later, correct?

I would like to start with the $30, 100 min. voice, unlimited text & data.

Will I be able to choose a different prepaid plan later if I'm not satisfied with the $30 plan?

Yes to all of those, but please keep in mind if you don't like the 30$ plan and switch you can't come back to it (they seriously said it to me, doubt it happened to others here) but that shouldn't be an issue, the reps were likely just lazy and didn't want to fix my plan twice lol.

You'll have a good experience with t-mobile if coming from virgin!

Set the apns if you have data issues, or call them again.

Yes you can come back but you have to do some easy trick. Port your number out. Get another new number. Sign up for a new plan with new SIM. Port your number back.

About switching plans, If I assume the $30 plan with 100 talk mins. are not enough, can I switch to another prepaid plan with tmo? I wasn't referring to switching carriers and come back to tmo.

If I switch carriers, I would try sticking with one for awhile unless a really bad connection.

Yes, you can switch to other prepaid plans without issue. The only problem is if you switch away from the $30, you cannot switch back to the $30 plan, you then have to buy and activate a new SIM to get "back" on the $30 plan.

The fine print is that the $30/mo 5GB plan (which I've been on for a year and a half now, btw, and I absolutely love it) is for new customers only - hence the need to reactivate with a new SIM if you decide to go back to it.

As long as you're shuffling SIMs, it'd be a pretty great time to get set up with Google Voice

Until the end of Google Talk-based VoIP was announced a couple of months back, I had actually been running a simple Asterisk server on a free Amazon EC2 instance coupled with the native Android SIP client (deets here). I was coming up towards the end of my one year free period, so had been debating whether or not I wanted to continue the service (at something like $7/mo). Knowing that it wouldn't work much longer made that decision a bit easier.

Before that, I had played with both GrooveIP and Talkatone (as well as a few other options).

In reality, I've never actually needed any additional minutes - I usually end the month with 50-80 minutes remaining. I just don't talk on the phone very much.

Otherwise, I detailed my set up in an extremely verbose XDA thread quite some time ago. Maybe the info there could perhaps help you.

I made the switch from VM to T-Mobile $30 prepaid earlier this month.

Make sure you call VM ahead of time and get your ACCOUNT NUMBER (different from your phone number). They will be reluctant to give it to you, but just be firm and say you are switching. Tell them you moved and VM has bad signal or something You will need this number when signing up for the port on T-Mobile.

The port happens in stages over about 18 hrs (or for me it did, fri night - mid day saturday). I could make outbound calls with my VM number from the new phone almost immediately, but calls to my number didn't come through on T-Mobile until saturday, T-Mobile sends you an SMS when the porting process is completed. Your VM phone will work until the port is done.

T-Mobile data services will work almost immediately after you press 'done' on the account activation page

Your VM account will disappear once the port is finished, just FYI. Good riddance, bye bye to flaky data connections.

Who are you referring to as VM, Virgin Mobile or Verizon Mobile? I'm currently with Verizon. I wonder will they take a long time if I port my number? But I had ported the number to Verizon, so I see it as my original number! :smokingsomb:

Now I'm thinking maybe I should port the number to Google Voice! What may happen next year when Google stop third party vendors from accessing GV. What about people phone numbers that was ported? I'm just curious now!

Voice isn't going away, just the VoIP interface that third party apps are currently using. My Voice number is the only one I use and I'm not concerned in the least about that.
