So many thumbnails, battery life short.

My DCIM folder contains one folder caller camera which contains thumbnails of images captured by the tablet itself. What sort of thumbnails do you see in DCIM?

Perhaps you are inadvertantly taking pictures using your tablet.
I've looked at a couple of the thumbnails and they are of pictures which I loaded on to the external 32GB card, in a card reader, directly from my desktop PC. This was after the factory reset. I haven't viewed them on the tablet so I am at a loss to understand how they got on to the internal card.

Also the Google+ cache is/was just under 3Gbyte (I've cleared it) I don't knowingly use Google+ so how has that happened?

Not sure what you mean there. Do you mean you were transferring images from your pc to a card located in the external slot of your tab? - I don't get why you mentioned a card reader.

Either way, are these pictures really where you expect them to be, as well as on that external card? Could be you are doing something wrong and you're just putting them in the wrong place. How are you doing that exactly?

After the Factory Reset, I took the 32Gb card from its slot in the Note 10.1 and put it in a card reader attached to my PC. I then cleared it down and copied all my pictures from My Pictures on my Windows PC on to the card. I then took the card and re-inserted it into the ext. card slot on the tablet. It shows 29Gb total storage with 22 Gb available which is about right.

I cannot understand how any of those images got into the thumbnails folder within DCIM on the internal memory since I haven't viewed them on the tablet since the Factory Reset. Deep down I am beginning to suspect this is all to do with Google+ which I don't knowingly have anything to do with. I have been a "Windows" man for over 20 years so am pretty PC literate but this I find difficult to understand.

Thanks for clarifying. That seems really odd. I don't use Google+ either. Im not even sure what it is. But im not getting the same problem as you and I have loads of images on a 64gb external card. Oh, one thing. You mention a thumbnails folder. Do you mean a folder called thumbnails, cos I dont have that. Or do you mean that you have thumbnails in a folder called dcim or in a folder called camera within dcim.

I have taken a screenshot which I now have sitting on the desktop of my PC but don't know how to include it in this reply. It shows a folder called "thumbdata3" within a folder called "thumbnails" which is in the DCIM folder. Currently the thumbnail and the DCIM folders are identically sized at 1761Mb.

Thanks for your time and interest in this frustrating problem.

No problem. I definitely don't have thumbnail folders in my dcim folder. If you want to attach a pic, at the bottom of the 'quick reply' box and you'll see a 'go advanced' tile. Click on that and go down to Attach Files and click on Manage Attachments, then follow your nose.

Hopefully other more experienced users will chip in. Perhaps its a particular app that's doing this.

Your instuctions on attaching an image are fine but the image is too big and needs to be resized. I'll leave that for now and tell you some things that I have done. Since I believe that the only images on my tablet are on the external card, I've removed it. I've reformatted it and reloaded the pictures but left it out of the tablet for now. I suspect that an app in the tablet is "harvesting" the pictures on the external card and creating thumbnails on the internal card. I've found that, in my google account settings there are various tickboxes including "Sync Google Photos" which was ticked. I've unticked it. I'm not really sure of the significance of that but the situation as of now is that the tablet is stable ie NOT creating thumbnails and NOT running the battery down.

I'm planning to laeve it like that for a day or two and then plug the external card back in. I'll repost when I do.

Good plan. Will be interested to hear how it pans out.

The good news is that everything is now OK but I really don't know which of the many things I have done has fixed the problem. When I put the microSD card back in, the Note didn't recognise it. No amount of re-formatting either in the Note or my PC would fix this problem so I got a new card which fixed that problem. Both cards were branded Sandisk. I also went to the Google account in settings and unticked every box except app data. I suspect that this last action was what fixed the problem but cannot explain the SD card problem.
