Does anyone know if Google ever does chats anywhere or if there are any forums that actual Google reps post on? Do you know of any ph#s or email addresses for anyone at Google?

I have had several issues with my Google contacts for a longtime. Years, not just months. I have sought help in a multitude of forums & chat rooms but have never gotten any advice/assistance that resolved my issues. I honestly don't recall ever having a product that i got less help for an issue from that products parent company.

Thank You to anyone who can lend a hand with this.

Search Google Groups for relevant forums.

I tried that with several variations but it always gives me the following:

https://groups.google.com/forum

which I've posted at multiple times with no viable solution found. I've had people respond and offer suggestions but none of them have worked. Part of the problem is that I need to know what is causing my issues to happen or it will just continue to happen over & over again as it's been doing each time I change phones. Contacts that were once single contacts then became 3, then 4, then 5. Each being a little different in what they contain.

I am convinced that only someone at Google can help but I'd love to be proven wrong about that.

Your problem is not with Google. It is how you have entered contacts or in the settings of your contacts app. Typically, it is something like this:

On most phones contacts can be stored in 3 places.

1. As Google contacts. These are stored on the phone and synced to your Google account (unless sync is turned off).
2. As Phone contacts. These are stored locally on the phone only and not synced.
3. As SIM contacts. Unlike 1+2 above, only names and one number per name can be stored. No addresses, email info, photos, etc.

Your contacts app can be set to display any or all of the above. If you see duplicates then you have those contacts saved in more than one place, for example as both 1+2, and your contacts app is set to display 1+2. So, you see duplicates. Changing the contacts app to display either 1 or 2 but not both eliminates the duplicate contact display.

See your phone manual for more details.

Also, you may have contacts that are joined and must be separated to sort things out.

Under "Contacts to display" there are 7 options:

  1. "All contacts" This is what it was set too.
  2. "Device"
  3. My personal Gmail account.
  4. My work Gmail account.
  5. Facebook
  6. My personal Yahoo Mail account
  7. "Customized list"
When I change it to "Customized list" and only select one Gmail account, such as my work account, I still show multiple(2-3) listings for many of my contacts. I also show contacts that are friends or family and have nothing to do with my job. When I go into settings for "Customized list" and select only my personal Gmail account it still shows multiple listings for many contacts as well as showing many of my contacts that should only be associated with my work Gmail account. These contacts as somehow migrating from one account to the other. Earlier this year it was recommended to me that I merge my duplicate contacts in order to only show one listing per contact. This worked for a lot of my contacts at first but did not stop them from duplicating again sometime later. In regards to my Google contacts as viewed on a PC, most of the contacts I merged that then went from multiple listings to just one, most are still just showing one listing but others are once again showing multiple listings. The number of listings for unique contacts isn't the same between my phone contacts and contacts within my Gmail accounts. As an example, one work vendor contact I just looked up on my PC shows 2 listings, while on my phone there are 5. The 2 listings in my Gmail on the PC show different info. One shows a name, address, and cell# while the other just shows a name, cell#, and group association. Of the 5 listings on my phone, 2 are identical with a name, cell#, and group association while the other 3 are nearly identical as they all show name, cell#, email, address, and contact photo. The only difference between them is the group associations are different. One of them is associated with the "family" group even though they are a work vendor.

I do not know what the difference is between "phone contacts" and "SIM contacts" although they sound like they should be the same thing.

Since I created my personal Gmail account, about 3 years ago, I have assigned ALL the contacts I created on my phones to either my work or personal Gmail accounts rather than allowing them to be assigned as phone contacts. Some of my other contacts were created within my Gmail account on one PC or another. I always assumed these were being automatically associated with the Gmail account I was logged into at the time I created the contact and only that account but that is clearly not the case. I would like to be able to somehow edit each contact to only be associated with one Gmail account or the other but I do not know how to accomplish this as it doesn't give me an option to do this on either my phone contacts or within Gmail on a PC.

As if the issues I've already outlined aren't enough there is more. Within my work Gmail contacts I have all our managers in a group for the purpose of sending daily group emails. Whenever I go to compose an email and click on "To", then "My contacts" to choose the group I have all our managers in I get multiple listings for almost all of them. I should be able to check the "Select All" box and move onto composing my email but instead I individually check a box for each individual manager. The way it's supposed to work for this is that you go into an individual contact and click on the group you have/want them in and then choose which of their email address, if they have more than one, associated with that group. Then when you choose that group when composing an email only that email address should be listed for that particular contact. I have gone in, multiple times, and confirmed that only one email address is checked for each contact but all the contacts email addresses come up for the group they are associated with. It makes no sense why this is the case. I have gone into a contact and deleted all but one email address associated with that contact, then confirmed it's gone by logging out of Gmail and logging back in only to later find the email address i deleted added back to the contact. I can not figure out how or why Google would add email address to a contact on it's own. No other email service I've had has ever done that. As of 4 days ago I just had a new wrinkle happen around the sometime I had my phone replaced. Now my groups in both my personal & work Gmail accounts have been duplicated and in one case quadrupled. This has never happened before, even when changing phones. It's seems pretty obvious to me that some, if not all, of these issues are related to some kind of syncing issue but in what way?? If I can't figure out how these things are happening then how can I fix it and stop it from occurring again?!

It seems pretty ridiculous to me that Google can do all this migrating, duplicating, adding of email address, and changing of account associations of contacts but they won't allow customers such as myself to undo alot of these changes or stop them from occurring in the future.

I know you don't believe these are Google issues but I honestly don't see how they aren't.

The most frustrating thing about all of this to me is that I have little doubt that someone from Google could figure this out pretty quickly and resolve it without much issue but they do not support people like me who have been using their products for years.

Again, Google is definitely NOT your problem, it is your usage and lack of understanding. Sorry. Read my post again. Read your phone manual. SIM and phone contacts are not the same. Check for joined contacts. Merge duplicates.

Since you do not know with any certainty what is causing my issues how can you be certain "Google is definitely NOT" my issue? My issue is with my Goggle contacts, Google Email, and android which, again, is Google. You say that my issues are do to my "usage and lack of understanding". Ok, lets say your right for a minute. How is my "usage and lack of understanding" leading to these issues?

What was it you think I missed when I read your post? I'm not clear on why you said to read it again.

After looking through the phone manual I do not see anything that points to the cause of my issues. I read the entire thing, paying the closest attention to the sections dealing with contacts, Google accounts, and syncing.

As for the joined contacts, I do have many that are merged(joined) from when it was recommended I merge all my instances of multiple contacts for the same unique person/company. As I said previously, merging seemed to help temporarily but did not stop the duplicating of contacts from happening again. It's important to note that most of the times I have changed phones my contacts have been imported/transferred to my new phone by a Sprint or, in the case of my last 2 phones, a BestBuy rep. I'm not saying they can't make mistakes but I would think a tech who deals with smartphones all the time would be less likely to unintentionally cause issues like mine than a phones owner would.

I've gone over, in my head, many times how I manage my GMail & Smartphone contacts and I simply can't nail down the root of these issues.

I do appreciate your sharing you opinions regarding my issues Crash but I have to admit to being frustrated by your responses. My frustration is due to the fact that your responses are lacking in any real answers to my problems. I don't fault you for that fact as you can only comment based on what you know. I don't believe your a Google, Android, or Samsung tech so I don't expect you to know everything they would. If I had access to any of those techs I believe I've be in a much better position to get past these issues, but I don't. All I can do is try to find someone out there who has experienced some or all of my issues and found a way to address them. So far that hasn't happened. A few others, like you, have tried to help but none have known what's causing these things to happen. I do not dismiss the possibility that my usage and/or lack of understanding plays a part in some or even all of the issues but without knowing how, it leaves me no closer to an answer than I was before.

I'm resigned to the fact that my only option at this time is to once again merge or delete most of my contacts in order to get back to not having all the duplicates I do. Right now my personal & work gmail accounts contacts number 192 & 654 respectively. That's 846 combined of which I estimate 1/2 to 2/3 are duplicates or contacts that have no name or company, just a ph# or email address which doesn't make for a viable contact and needs to be deleted. A large number of contacts are facebook friends which I don't want as phone or Gmail contacts as the vast majority are people i won't ever be contacting outside of FB. I did not purposefully add them to my contacts and while my phone allows me to have them not show up on my contacts list if i so choose, Gmail does not allow me that same option. At least not that I've been able to determine.

I'm willing to consider any & all possible solutions but I have to also know how this is happening or it will continue to happen and after putting in all the hours it's going to take me, again, to get rid of all these duplicate contacts, folders, & groups, I will have to put those same hours in again and again down the road when the duplications happen again.

This is happening because of some process tied to the way Google/Android is designed to function so it only stands to reason that Google would be ones with the solution. Nobody else has had anything other than speculation in the years I've been looking for answers.

I don't FB so I can't advise on handling those contacts. And unfortunately right now I don't have much time to help. Keys to remember:

1. Unlink linked contacts (aka 'joined') before merging or deleting. Linked contacts are probably your biggest troublemaker.
2. It's best to save all contacts as Google contacts, not phone or SIM.
3. Pay attention to the display settings.

Google contacts is not 'broken'. Absolutely not. It is only doing what you tell it to. Millions of people use Google contacts very successfully.

Understood. I'll continue to post questions as I go and whatever help you can provide will be appreciated.

1. Unlink linked contacts (aka 'joined') before merging or deleting. Linked contacts are probably your biggest troublemaker.

Is there a way to view/search for just "joined" contacts? Between joined & merged contacts most of mine should be merged but I have no doubt there are joined ones in the bunch but finding them by going from contact to contact will be very time consuming as I have, as previously mentioned, over 800 contacts currently.

2. It's best to save all contacts as Google contacts, not phone or SIM.

How do I change a contacts association? For instance, I do not want any phone contacts, but rather have all my contacts associated with either my personal or work gmail accounts. When I go into my phone, change the "Contacts to Display" to only "Device" it shows 207 contacts(absolutely no duplicates I should mention). Unfortunately, when I go into each individual contact I am given no way to change the association even when i go into edit mode.

3. Pay attention to the display settings.

I have played with the display settings quite a bit while trying to see what contacts are associated with what. Am I correct in assuming you mean this in terms of keeping things like my FB friends from showing in my contacts? In this regard I would have hoped that by simply changing my "Contacts to Display" to "Custom View" and then making sure that the option related to my FB account is deselected would do the trick but no such luck. Unfortunately most, if not all, of my FB friends are now also showing as Google contacts so even with the FB option deselected all my multitude of FB contacts still show up in my contacts list. Another example of my Google contacts being altered without my desire to have that done.

Google contacts is not 'broken'. Absolutely not. It is only doing what you tell it to. Millions of people use Google contacts very successfully.

Again, while it's not impossible that I may have unwittingly authorized Google to make changes like this, I most defiantly never did so on purpose.
