The two-kinds of former iPhone people

Disclaimer: This post is meant for entertainment purposes, not as an attack on any one specific person. It should also be understood that I am a former iPhone user (for 2 years) and found it to be a wonderful phone that worked great.

I've noticed in the three years that I've been participating in this forum that there are two distinctly different kinds of former iPhone users. Here are my decidedly tongue-in-cheek, over-the-top perceptions:

"New guy here, former iPhone user of a couple years and new to Android. I must admit, I'm a little overwhelmed at the potential of everything this phone can do. I'm scared. Somebody hold me."

This is followed by several very soothing and welcoming posts advising to take their time and just let the Android goodness flow over you. It's almost always followed up by a post like this within two weeks:

"O.M.G. I can't believe how awesome this phone is!!! How on earth did I ever live without it? Widgets, launchers, customization, easy file transfers, long battery life, a screen I can actually see!! How on earth can anyone think that iPhone is better? I was lost but now I'm found! Can I get an AMEN, brothers and sisters?!?"

Then there's this guy:

"W.T.F.? I just 'upgraded' from my beloved, wonderful iPhone because I'd heard that Android was so much better - what a disappointment. Everything is completely different. There are too many options. The icons don't all look the same. I've had this phone for almost a whole day now and I can't figure out how to do anything. Nothing seems to work like it did in iPhone. How can I get all my stuff from iTunes to work? My phone is not exactly the same as all my friends phones. I'm regretting this purchase. I want my iPhone back. I want my mommy. Or Steve Jobs. Sob!"

Okay, a little over the top but you have to admit, not too far off from reality! Sorry about the random observation, but my GN3 is running so perfectly, I've not nothing else to talk about!

You missed the third and by far largest type.... those who are happy with their phone, don't care what anyone else thinks, and just get on with enjoying it. Much like 99% of Android users, really.

This third type of people probably doesn't come and post on these forums. I've yet to see someone switch to a new phone with a different phone OS and write a post saying how indifferent they are to the new phone/OS.

Regarding the OP, I would say that the two types of former iOS users who post on AF are those who prefer Android more and those who prefer iOS more. I think it is as simple as that.

I am an Android fan, mainly because 1) It's not Apple and 2) It's not Micropsycho, and 3) easy to obtain and 4) functional.


3 and 4 are negotiable. 1 and 2, mandatory.

Think you forgot one though, Symbian. The once mighty Nokia reigned supreme in the Middle Kingdom. Now relegated to a few old-timers who refuse to change, well until they crap-out.

I am talking about this part of the world of course.

Personally, I've found that there are only two types of people in the world ...

Android seems to have an option for everyone. some folks like the old way (Gingerbread devices/ROMs) some like it modern (Flat UI and Google Experience goodness via KitKat ROM or new device running it already like Nexus 5) some like it the way iOS 6 and earlier was (MIUI, TouchWiz ROM, etc). Apple lost me with iOS 7. sure, i can use it, but i have a harder time looking at it in the long term. i don't have the option to turn it back either. if i hated an OTA upgrade, just flash it back to the old stuff. I never see any Windows phone in the wild either. i still occasionally find someone using an old Curve on some pre-paid carrier, just like a few still exist with basic flip phones, so while BlackBerry might be dead today, their older products and apparently, BBM on Android survives. but then, Buick survives when i still see old people driving them. so there's always a few out there who can't let go of the old yet. My story is one of a person who had a BlackBerry Curve as his first 'smartphone'. got an iPhone second, and then got addicted to how fluid and reliable it was, how long the battery lasted, and invested quite heavily in both the App Store as well as iTunes. it inspired me to buy an iPad 3rd Generation which i still occasionally use from time to time. the Kindle Fire came later on, and i often tried some cheap prepaid Android phone offerings but always found the experience inferior, slow, laggy, crash-prone, and the battery life sucked. people and mods here are all aware of how i used to trash Android. whether it was the many changes in how Android worked in 4.0 and up, to the generally inferior-compared-with-iOS feel of the apps that exist on both platforms but which almost always look and work better in iOS. i am thankful some recommended some higher end products, like my Galaxy Tab 2 and my more recent Galaxy S3 and Nexus 10. i still think Android has some issues in the battery life area, as my iPad outlives both my Tab 2 and my Nexus 10 only gives a 5 to 6 hour battery life with simple web browsing (even shorter if i am using YouTube, Netflix, or games). my Galaxy S3 is currently my daily phone, with my previous iPhone 4 acting as a backup in the rare chance my S3 has a bad week. i had to purchase a much bigger battery for the S3 to get anything remotely close to the battery life in the iPhone 4 so as far as my phone is concerned, i no longer need an iDevice to do anything.

Little insight about it. Personally, I think it's just folks who can't handle the change or don't want to change. I see it too with OS upgrades on Android. The new look of KK or ICS.... folks want to downgrade because they miss the old look. Either way, there's still a whole lot more options with Android than iOS to make folks happy.

No problem. I knew what I was doing when I posted. The point was that, oddly, many people much, much younger than I view change with extreme prejudice. I find it refreshing and enlightening.
