i have just ordered a hero from orange on payg and i want to unlock it, if i take it to somewhere like phones4u, will their unlock be succesful cause i have read alot bout unlocking the orange hero, i dont know software version cause i have to wait till sunday to get it, also, should i root it, cause i will probably get alot of apps so apps2sd will help, and i would also like to tether my phones internet to my laptop using wifi, is rooting easy and is formatting microsd for apps 2 sd easy?? thanks:)

Nope, not in the slightest. I love Android, and had a Hero. iPhone users have no beef with Android folk in my experience. Horses for courses and all that.

It was more a comment about getting into a product on it's plummeting life-cycle. HTC should be ashamed of the way they have treated Hero users.

Nonsense. Many people (myself included) are not prepared to pay hundreds of pounds for the latest smartphones, or get tied into expensive contracts with minutes that we never use.

I got a Hero a couple of months back, for peanuts from T-Mobile (

Which part of what I said is "nonsense" exactly?

"plummeting life-cycle"

The Hero is a fine phone, even on Android 1.5 HTC have stated they are comitted to providing 2.1 on it, it's just delayed (again), that's not ideal, but it's better than most hardware manufacturers provide in other sectors who rarely provide updates, let one updates are huge as the Android 1.5 > 2.1

having just rooted and applied the villian 5.4 rom a few days ago (because of the announcement that the update is delayed)

I can tell you that the upgrade was very simple. I am on Orange.

Download instant root - Ta dahh the phone is rooted :)
install an app that alows you to do nandroid backups.
backup (just incase)
flash
change the mms settings.
DONE.

it depends on your Technical Knowledge as to how easy this is. I am in IT so it was very easy. if you dont know what command prompt is - I suggest you stick to the official roms :) - otherwise go for it :) - the backup system means you can always roll back.

Do you know what a product life-cycle is?

I only believe I'm clever comparitively. The Hero is nearing the last phase of it's product life cycle.
It's not my choice by the way, it's just life.

Don't take it so personally.

Im not sure why your posting here trick, your posts recently are not helpful or productive, and tend to incite flames. (Valid or not)

The forum is here to support users of the Hero...

hang on.......before we all explode into flames.....

we all know the legend and the desire have been released, and that they are new, correct? and they both have 2.1?

now bear with me, but.....seeing as the legend is the direct follow-up to he hero.....would that not mean that the hero is probably coming to the end of its cycle?

and wait.....dont scalp me. im a hero owner, and i love it. 1.5 or rooted 2.1, its the best phone i've ever had. Of course i say this having come from a nokia n97 lol, so one could say i had low expectations, but really, i have 10 months left on my contract, and for the first time, im ok with waiting it out.

end of life cycle means the following.

Introduction - About 10 months ago
Growth - 9 months till Legend was release
Maturity - 2.1 update and what ever
Decline - Legend replacement arrives
Withdrawl - HTC actually stop making them

As far as I can tell Apple Iphone 3G not the 3GS is still being made even though its now a "tape deck" in your own words, as it wont run all OS4 features on it. Still a brilliant phone and I'd gladly have a free one but its not a tape deck.

I certainly wont keep my hero once the contract is up, but I wont pay over the odds to jump on the latest and greatest.
