coming from iOS to KitKat

Coming from iOS to my first android phone since the HTC desire a few year ago.

On my iPhone I could click HTML links and open safari and also click on a date and time within an email which would launch the calendar and auto create an event with the subject as the title.

I'm using the stock email and calender apps and those don't seem to he a feature.
Is there anyway around this?

So far the nexus 5 is taking a bit of getting used to. I'm liking the bigger screen, I've got the 311k version as well which is a plus.

As far as I can see the gmail app only works with gmail.
I have an icloud and exchange email which I'll need it to work with as well.

Not Having the dates clickable is a pain as it means I'll have to either manually add the events into my calendar or use an iOS device to read those emails again to add to the calendar.

Again, email links in exchange send me straight to Chrome. What exactly happens when you tap a link?

Have you installed a second browser? If so try clearing the defaults in settings>apps> then in Chrome and your new browser.

Android manages default apps by asking you first time which one you want the action to use and you can select once or always.

Hopefully if you clear the default it will prompt you in this way.

Perhaps try one of the many other email clients on the play store.

I quit using the stock one myself after about 3 minutes. I have no issue with clickable links, not sure if the stock app had them or not to be honest.

As for dates, etc. in email, most likely there is no solution available on Android as Apple won a lawsuit against HTC for data detectors in email (and other apps) in late 2011 that banned them from being used.

How can apple have a patent to read the dates within an email ? What kind of crap is that.

Ive used the default app manager and now some of the HTML links within emails are click able.
Might end up selling my nexus 5 and just buying another iPhone instead.

They don't. All of my devices do this, although I only use the stock app on the S3 (work supplied so no choice). Not used the stock email client on my other devices, only the Gmail app.

just checked on my phone again.
links work in gmail app not but stock app, cant get the k9 to sycn with exchange anyway.

the same email on my ipad gives me a clickable link, and a clickable date with shows "create event" and loads the calender app.

cant believe android is so far behind, unless there is a setting somewhere i havent found.

K9 does work with exchange if you have the settings and password.

Have it working fine on sister in laws phone connecting to the office/outlook website via exchange.

If not there will certainly be an app to get it to do it all the time.

I assume you've checked settings in the email app for an option to parse dates?

Came from iOS and takes a few weeks to get used to...

My biggest pet peeve's were the notifications on lockscreen, do not disturb, and stock keyboard.

I'm not a huge falling of bombarding phone with aftermarket apps and prefer built in directly from Google/apple to get that clean build quality but for these features I downloaded nils lockscreen which is awesome... And nights keeper also awesome... Not as fluid as native apps but it'll do for now...

And no matter what something about the auto correct or keyboard on iOS is nearly impossible to beat... Swift key, Google keyboard etc... Not of them comes close to as fast as i can type on iPhone which is a pain but I'm still adjusting... Swipe on 1 handed gestures is pretty sweet but the other 99% of the time two handed just hasn't gotten it as nice as iOS

Either way its becoming easier to ditch this phone and go back to iOS

You are comparing two distinctly different mobile operating systems. Anytime one tries something new, it's a fun experience if you're open minded and willing to learn.

Since you're having such trouble, stick with what you like iOS. Androids not for everyone.

Its all good now. Got my calenders to sync.
Only missing the iOS freebies when they reduce apps to free.
Is there a good website for this ?
And being able to click a date within an email and create a calender event automatically

For freebies keep watching Amazon app store. They often give away a number of very good apps. Christmas they gave away 20 apps.

As for calendar, try an app call Cal, but I think it does pretty much everything the default calendar app does. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.anydo.cal

I haven't been around the smart phone for too long, starting with the LG Esteem then the S3 and now the Nexus 5. I have learned alot over the last several years rooting and flashing custom rom's and really enjoying all that can be done with an Android phone but with that being said I can certainly say I am no expert at any of this. What I can say (IMO) after having an iPhone provided to me from my company for my work is that I would never own one if you gave it to me for free, it is the same phone as my bosses iPhone that he bought himself and the same phone as my neighbors , it is extremely slow and I have to reboot it often just to keep it running. Your iPhone looks the same as mine and the same as my brother's..etc, etc. I love the way I can customize my phone to make it mine and only mine. I'm sure that some of you like your iPhone and think it's a great phone(nothing wrong with that, to each is own) but for me I will never leave an Android....NEVER!

I've had iPhones since the 3g came out.

Only other android I've had was a HTC desire day one release and it was awful. Kept crashing and the battery life was terrible.
The wife had a xperia ray and that never received an update.

I guess I'm just used to iphones but I'm slowley learning to type as fast as I can on an iPhone on this as well.

Once you get used to it you'll never go back to an iPhone. They are different and each has its strengths but for me at least, Android and the Nexus 5 come out ahead.

For mail clients try K9 mail or Aquamail. I prefer the latter but they're both good.

Many calendar apps to pick from. I use Business Calendar but there are many others.

Of course, when and if you root your phone, you enter a whole other world of power and use. But that's a different ball of wax.
