Auto Wifi - 3G Switch

Have anybody tried this app? I could use something like it since I've changed carriers and will be using Wifi & 3G at different times. It's being a pain to keep manually switching.

I use my finger. I have Data ON-OFF on my desktop to turn data on and off. One more press to switch on or off than that app, and I can tell at a glance whether data is on or off.

True and I use my finger also, but the app suppose to do that automagically. It can be a pain sometimes when my hands are doing something else, when driving and I'm leaving the house and forget to turn off wifi and turn on data. I'll see how well it works.

What do you mean, which phone do you have? It does it automagically or what app are you using? My Samsung was running GingerBread so I guess it didn't do it.

My Samsung switches automatically between WiFi and cellular data. Provided it's within range of a WiFi network it already knows, it connects to that WiFi AP and stops using cellular, no user interaction required. In fact every Android phone I've had does it, which is two Samsungs(one with Gingerbread), a KIRF Samsung and a Lenovo. I wouldn't have any need for this app.

Some of the cyanogen roms have the notification bar setting "WiFi disables 3g" & also "mobile data enables 3g".

I miss these settings in later CM builds . I've always hated having to click both 'mobile data' & '3g' toggles for when I want internet (sync is left on as it only works when internet is on).

Now that I think about it, I guess it does switch as long as you have both wifi & data turned on. I assume with wifi on all the time, at least when on the go, it will drain the battery faster, while continuing to search for a wifi AP. Maybe I don't really need another app. I'm still learning the new Moto G.

You are correct. All Androids will switch between WiFi/mobile data automatically but waste power searching for another WiFi signal if WiFi is left on. Manual switching WiFi is kind of a hassle. To solve this, WiFi Location Toggle will automatically turn WiFi off when leaving a known WiFi network such as home or work, and turn it back on when back in range.

surely, for the app to be able to toggle wifi ON, its gona have to be checking for wifi which android does anyway. Or does the app use GPS to know where it is? And is that more efficient?

Don't know about the others, but the app I posted above, Smart WiFi toggler uses cell tower IDs to determine if you are in/out of range. Probably less accurate that way, but uses much less battery. Looking at my stats in that app, Wifi has been enabled for 8411 hours and Wifi has been connected for 8322 hours, so not really that much time at all that Wifi is on and not connected.

Should Data stay enabled on? If so, when on Wifi, does it run before Data if both is enabled? The original app I'm trying, states that the app needs to be open with this message, "Do not close this application". So when it's open and I press the Home key, does that minimize the app?

I'm still learning about this type of activity!

With WiFi Location Toggle, leave mobile data on. WiFi has priority over mobile data. The app runs as a service unless disabled in its settings, but uses a negligible amount of power.

I'm not finding WiFi Location Toggle in the Play Store. Is this the name of the app?

I think the Auto Wifi / 3G Switch app turns Data off but I think it shouldn't, unless you leave it open (on screen).

I leave my wifi on and it doesn't take up anymore battery than when it is off.

It seems redundant to have an app do something your phone does anyways...... That's just me though

Do you leave it on when you're not around the AP? If so, try turning it off and see if you get better battery usage. Just a thought!

My battery life doesn't change weather I leave it on or not lol

My LG Optimus S and my mom's Samsung Replenish switch automatically to WiFi if available. But you could also use Llama. It's free and can do all kinds of stuff like launching apps, services, or control panel functions based on your location (using either cell towers which saves power or GPS which gobbles power), charging status, WiFi network availability, Bluetooth connection availability, day of the week, time of day, etc.

So for example, I set up one "event" such that IF I'm charging and my phone detects my car's Bluetooth, THEN the phone launches Waze (navigation & traffic alerts) launches a MixZing playlist, turns the audio to full volume, turns the screen up to full brightness, turns off the lock screen, and turns off the screen timeout.

Llama sounds interesting, I'll keep it in mind. Right now I'm using WiFi Location Toggle, it is doing the job without issues. The one I originally posted about didn't seem to work as it should.

I'll try some of the others mention once I'm satisfied with WiFi Location Toggle, just to try out and have experience with them.
