nightly custom roms question

i've always stayed away from nightlies, figuring who'd want to go thru the rigamarole "nightly" of downloading a zip, moving it to sd card, booting into recovery, blah blah.

today i flashed a nightly that i had downloaded yesterday. a few hours later i got a system update notification.

is that how nightlies work? every day i'll just have to push the ok button and i'm done?

hey funk...it is the omni rom you suggested. smooth sailing so far.

and thom...no hate...but imo too many threads are moved to an area that is less trafficked than this one. my question is not device specific, as i have many, and it is not carrier specific.

edit: in case that came across poorly, the specific device i put the rom on is a n7 2012. tomorrow i'll be putting it on a gnex, and an n7 2013. none of them have a carrier. see what i mean? pigeonholing these thing into a device, when it is a generic android question, seems off.

Yeah i think too many posts are getting moved to forums with less viewers when theyre pretty general topics.
Aye mate. Omni do ota updates. I tried it on my s3 and it works amazingly well. Just remember to keep the original full rom zip on your tab and theres a folder somewhere where you can put any zips that you want to be included in the flash (supersu update for example [not sure if you have to put gapps there too])
How is omni on the n7 mate?
P.s, are you using TWRP recovery?

yes, twrp. no bugs have hit me yet, which i find pretty cool...i am always on the lookout for them.:) one thing i don't see which i'd like are options to fiddle with the navigation buttons.

but so far i am well pleased. i was a bit fearful of going with a nightly...i've always tried stable releases or at least release candidates. i'll give this a go for a spell, though i do want to try out cm11.

What phone/device? Just curious. If you put zips in OpenDelta/FlashAfterUpdate, and turn off "Secure Flash" in OpenDelta's Update settings, you can have it auto-flash things like root when it's done with the update.

Cool. Have you tried using Xposed Framework mate? Think theres some xposed modules that will let you mess about with the nav buttons

It doesn't play nice with some of Omni's features.

n7, though i'm going to try and put it on a galaxy nexus later on today.

xposed framework....open delta....flash after update...secure flash...all new terms to me. i am very much a custom rom newbie:thinking:

ran into my first snag....cannot get windows to recognize the device in MTP mode. i am sort of a driver dunce, so am restoring to stock, and i'll head over to omni's google plus site later to see what's up.

i figure the issue is with me, and not the rom, because i've been driver challenged, and i did wipe all drivers from my pc when fiddling with another device.

Finally got my n7 rooted today Boathead mate. It went mega-smoothly, even installing the drivers.
What i noticed after putting on ES and looking through my files is i have the "!ReadyToFlash" folder in mnt/sdcard... is that a standard nexus thing thats always there? Ive only ever seen that in Omni Rom on my s3.
Its populated with busybox, perm-recovery and update-superSU.
did Wugs do that?

That is a folder Wug's NRT created and uses when it pushes files and scripts to the device for flashing.

I have deleted it's contents in the past, Wug's will restore anything it needs for the next operation you have it perform.

Cool thanks mate
I just remember that folder or similar from Omni on the s3 where you put files that you want to be flashed with the next opendelta update :)
I have a question but im not sure if its too off topic for this thread.. when the next official update is pushed for the Grouper, is there a way i could take it but keep root?
Cheers

I'm not sure anyone has successively triggered an OTA for stock without unrooting and flashing stock recovery.. even then some of the last couple of updates turned into a crap shoot of reliability even for people that never rooted their devices to begin with.

If you run multirom or a custom kernel you will have to remember to flash stock kernel as well, you can find the stock kernels in the Wug's folder under \data\Stock_Kernel. They are ready to go in img format, if you previously selected the build in device settings then it should be there. Flash the kernel using NRT or just copy the img file to the device or USB stick and use an OTG cable to flash it using the Flashify root app or recovery.

I have never attempted a stock OTA without first making a nandroid, It has come in handy more then once. Once you have a current nandroid go ahead and start the process to return to as close to stock without locking again and then give it a try.

Sweet thanks guys.
So when google release an android update, theres gona be a recovery flashable rooted version of it pretty soon afterwards?
Its my 1st nexus and rooting it was easier than i thought but i really hate PCs and prefer to do everything in android so if i never have to use the wifes crappy laptop again ill be a happy man :)

wug says that as soon as the image is made public by google that he'll have it ready for NRT users within 48 hours.

i will say that he took a few days more to get the 4.4.2 image, but he did get it. slacker.:)

i like NRT, but it has been messing up my drivers. i have so many freakin devices going on that i can't keep track of them anymore and have essentially given up on it for a few days else i end up in alcohol rehab.:)

edit: not sure if you'll lose root with any NRT flashed update. i did lose root with the omni ota update....it was when i was trying to put the su zip in the opendelta folder that i ran into my drivers issue.
