Root KitKat root? I know, silly question

I don't think that there is a way to root 4.4 yet. (I'm not interested in rooting myself.) As far as I know, you needed to root 4.2.2 and then follow a procedure. See [4.4 ROOT] SlapMyMoto 1.0 (Requires you to be on 4.2.2) - xda-developers

Correct. You have to start the root process while on 4.2.2 and follow the steps linked above. If you don't, there's no rooting for you, until an exploit is released. (It appears one has been found, but no word on if/when it will be released.)

Once you update to 4.4, there is no going back to 4.2.2, unless you have a Dev. Edition Maxx.

Can't even use RSD to fx back?

You mean go back to Jellybean? That's only possible with a developer edition, with the bootloader unlocked - though you don't need RSD in that case. Motorola provides all of the files required to use fastboot to flash back.

With a locked bootloader, non-developer edition phone - which cannot have the bootloader unlocked - the phone will not allow you to install older software. If you try you will just get errors.
