some basic Android questions

Hi,
Apple escapee here with some basic questions maybe you guys could answer.

I have been trying quite a few different apps to get the setup the way i want it, but there is overlap between some - say for example the colour of the LED, or notifications. How are you meant to know which app is actually in control? Is there a hierarchy of system v's third party?

Is there a way to switch off the native gmail app and pipe it all through k-9? or is this a bad idea? at least i could have all my mail in a unified inbox, and not get mail twice.

I don't think there's a way of "turning off" Gmail, short of uninstalling it or changing sync settings. If you're getting all of your mail in K9 and don't want to use Gmail, go into Gmail's settings and turn off notifications.

Welcome to the forums!!

You can certainly choose not to sync gmail, and then set up k-9 to check your gmail account.

From your settings menu scroll down until you get to the Accounts section of it. Tap on Google. Tap on your google account at the top. This page shows you everything that is tied to your gmail account. I would take this opportunity to uncheck anything you dont want to sync, or that you don't use. This will save battery life.

To stop your gmail application from checking for new mail, uncheck the box next to gmail.

You would then just need to setup k-9 with the appropriate account information.

You can disable GMail.
Settings --> Apps --> Scroll right to All --> GMail --> Disable.

To enable it's the same list but it'll be at the bottom.

LightFlow allows you to have different colours for different notifications.

If your not using a third party app for LED/notifications, then it is of course up to any individual app to use those facilities. If you add third party into the mix, it can be different combinations of the original app and the third party app. One very good app for LED control is Light Flow (there are others also). Notifications still generally go through the originating app, but Light Flow can be used to control the LED color for individual apps/notifications.

As for gmail, if your not going to use the gmail app itself, simply disable it in settings > apps > gmail then configure your email client app of choice to use whatever email accounts it will support.
