Just setup Exchange ActiveSync on My DInc: First Impressions

I just set up Exchange ActiveSync, and here are my thoughts:

1. Very easy to set up. My company does not use security policies, though. I just typed in server, domain, username, password, and email address, and everything worked flawlessly.

2. Emails sync with Outlook (both send and receive) about as fast as they did on my BlackBerry with BES server.

3. Calendar stuff syncs fine and I have had no problems yet, but it seems to take a little bit longer than email to sync. Maybe a few minutes or so. (or maybe I just had a weaker signal when I was messing around with the calendar, so everything was just slower).

4. Folder view for emails is far superior to BlackBerry. I can easily view the directory structure of Outlook and view the emails within each individual directory.

5. I don't use notes or tasks, so I can't comment on that.

6. Overall, I will have to say that my experience rivals my corporate email experience on BlackBerry, which is a huge surprise. I thought BlackBerry was far and away the best device for email, but I guess I was wrong.

On a side note, I still think that BlackBerry's notification profiles kill Android's notification profiles, even with the various apps out there for Android.

Yeah it is a breeze to set up. Mine hits before it gets to my inbox on my laptop. It doesn't appear to have top down folder notification, but I wasn't expecting that and I have touchdown license for that if needed.

Right, it does not have top down folder notification, but I actually prefer it that way. If I were getting notifications every time a distribution list of which I am a member receives an email, I would be flooded and my battery would die in an hour. I like getting notifications only when things actually arrive in my Inbox.

I don't think you can. I think this is similar to how you can't have top down folder notifications... if you could automatically sync different folders, then you would theoretically be able to get automatic notifications on those folders.

For what it's worth, you can't get these types of notifications on BlackBerry, either. Can you get them on WinMo? Or on any mobile platform, for that matter?

Actually you do have this functionality on blackberry via folder synchronization. It just shows you a filed icon in your inbox. Touchdown will do this as well.

The Iphones activesync email client was able to do it same with the BES. I was running touchdown on my Moto Droid for this reason. I really like HTC’s Client compared to the Droids and touchdown but I might have to go back to touchdown to be able to sync the subfolders

outlook exchange worked on my blackberry storm by using the sync server. It just worked on there. But I can not get it to work on the incredible. Keep getting either username or password error or I get "Failed to connect to the Exchange server. Please check Exchanged server settings" or I get a error about contact your adminiistrator for security settings.

Each error is a result of changing things in those ares to try to get it to work.

What is the trick to make it work?

but now I can not look on my blackberry for the settings as it is no longer activated.

FWIW: I've had friends at work trying to set up their Exchange email on Droids using our sync server with similar mixed results...works fine for me, a friend tried it on his and it won't connect, similar type of user name/password error message. Haven't been able to figure out why it works for me and not for him...

It's dependent on the server settings that your company has for EAS (often the security settings like enforceable PIN or remote wipe). Hence why it usually comes down to testing each new phone / OS with your EAS account. Too much variability for someone to simply say "it just works" with EAS.

Yup, but the interesting thing here is that we are both subject to the same security settings, etc., so it working for me (and others at our company) and not him (and others at our company) is the odd part...

Is anyone out there using ActiveSync with Exchange 2010? I am able to get mail to sync ok, but I am having some trouble with the calendar. Just wondering if anyone else is experiancing issues with Exchange 2010.

I have Exchange 2010 on my server also. The same problem, mail and contacts sync with no problem. My calendar does not sync either. I called VZW, the phone is too new they were baffled at what to do. I called HTC last night...

Call #1: There is an known problem with calendar entries that don't have an end date. I said I have tons of birthdays in my calendar, none of them have an end. You mean I have to edit every one of them to have an end date for it to work? Yes. Crap! I did it, still didn't work.

Call #2: It could be a problem with your security certificate. How? Mail and contacts work. You need to copy a .p12 certificate to your SD card and install it on your phone. How do I do that? I don't know. I've exported my SSL certicate, but it's only in .cer format, how do I get it in .p12? Again he says I don't know. I said so what do I do? He says it's not the phone, it's something with your server. I said what could be wrong on the server, you're giving me nothing to go off of. He says he doesn't know, it's a server problem. I said ok, but give me something to go after, we know it COULD be a server, but what may be the issue? He says he doesn't know and it's a server issue on my end. I said "thanks I'll continue to try nothing and maybe that'll work, bye".

Call #3: walked through the same stuff, remove account, readd it, power off phone blah blah blah. Long story short she is passing me to Tier 2 support. Here's the kicker, she said it could take up to TEN days for them to contact me! WTF?! I think there may be some false advertising going on!

For the folks that have setup their Exchange accounts on the Incredible, can you answer a few questions for me please:

1. For email & Calendar: How far back can your sync your past emails/appointments?

2. Is there search for calendar and emails?

3. Is there a Global Address List?

4. Can you create recurring appointments?

5. Can you delete individual recurring appointments?

6. In calendar, can you mark appointments as private?

7. Is there any other thing that missing or incomplete in the Incredible in regards to Exchange support?

I'm asking this because right now I'm on the MOTO Droid and these are the limitations with their exchange support, especially #1 where I can only go back 1 month.

Thanks!

Sorry to hijack this thread, but one thing about Exchange ActiveSync that's killing me. If I read an email on my DI, then delete it, then go to Outlook on my CPU, the email I deleted on the DI will show up in my Deleted Items folder, but as unread, i.e. it's bolded.

It's driving me crazy. I end up having "unread" Deleted Items and the obsessive compulsive in me can't stand it.

Anyone else having this issue?

I have the DInc and have a question. Is there anyone to create filters in Active Sync Exchange that filters out emails so they don't hit your Inc. I have a rule setup in Outlook that automatically sends an email sent by a specific email address to go directly to my deleted items in my Personal Folders in Outlook 2007. The reason why i ask is because on my BB Storm, I setup a filter that blocked these emails from going to my BB Inbox. I also remember on my Moto Q with Win Mobile I always also able to setup a filter as well. I work at a help desk with a ticket tracking system, the system sends an email for every ticket opened by the help desk to all help desk employees, so my inbox can fill up quite quickly. I did notice that if I have Outlook opened up on my desktop these emails do not show up on my DInc, but when I close Outlook (Like I did last night before I went home), they are showing up today on my Inc.

I've had three issues with Exchange. Here's a summary and how I handled them:

- First, I couldn't get my mail to load although the calendar and contacts worked. Turned out to be a problem with the size of my inbox (errr... 4000 emails in there). Once I cleaned up my inbox and deleted and re-added the account in Android, it now receives emails.

- The merging of my Google and Exchange contacts resulted in a few hundred contacts, with lots of duplicates and too many to link together. So I cleaned up the redundant contacts in Outlook, but the removed contacts were never removed from the phone, and the contact syncing started causing errors. Again, deleting and re-adding the account on the phone fixed this.

- Third problem I'm still stuck on. As mentioned above I'm now getting Exchange email, but only if I click through from the widget to the inbox and let it reload (or manually reload it). So new mails do not automatically show up in the widget, and I don't get any notifications. This is with "As they arrive" selected as my sync option, although I've tried several others.

Any ideas on that last one? I've been researching it everywhere but haven't found a solution.
