Help Dialpad and all face buttons still active, even when screen is black, during phone calls

This is getting very annoying: I make a call, I put the phone to my head, and the screen goes black. Good. This is to stop my face from pressing the buttons on the screen.

However, on my Nexus 5, the blackscreen does not prevent any interactions with the face buttons. During a call, I can hear the key tones being pressed, and on two occasions, I have disconnected from the call because my face is hitting the disconnect button.

This is unacceptable. How can I fix this?

Screen protector shouldn't have anything to with this.

When the proximity sensor is triggered (resulting in screen going dark/off), the screen should not respond to input (regardless of whether there is a screen protector or not)
If a screen protector is fitted to a device without cutouts for the proximity sensors this stops the screen shutting off.

If you look at official verses cheap eBay protectors, the official ones will always have a cut out where the proximity sensors are ;)

If that's the case, the screen isn't going to turn off.
Net Net - if the screen turns off, it shouldn't accept any input from the user.
