Downloading English(US) without my permission

everytime my tab 2 connects to wifi it attempts a rather large download of offline speech data that i never told it to do. i have turned off the auto update and everything and every time it's booted it starts downloading behind my back. i never told it to download offline speech data. it's a large download which will take two hours and uses up tons of bandwidth making it impossible to use my tablet until it completes. i've tried force stopping download manager but it pops back up doing it again in seconds. i cannot stop this. is there any way to stop this thing from doing stuff behind my back?

Hi Nick, I moved this thread to Android Lounge as we're both having similar things happening. It's apparently not something specific to the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1. Get more eyes on it. :)

I had it happening yesterday and the day before, at about 5PM both times. Although it was trying to download Deutsch(Deutschland) offline speech data. However it wasn't actually downloading anything at all, there's a download notification and a progress bar that shows starting but never moves. It doesn't cause the phone to become unusable for me and eventually it goes away. I'll see if it happens again this afternoon and report back. I've got auto-updates turned off as well. This is on a Samsung phone, I've never used it in German and nor has it ever been to Germany, only English(UK) and Chinese(Simplified).

Maybe Google's botched something, like they were having major problems with the Play Store a few months ago.

Sprechen Sie Deutsch? Nein! :D

my Tab 2 has done this since i got the 4.2.2 OTA. it's odd as for me it is actually downloading and taking up bandwidth. it slowly increments 1% at a time, so it's indeed downloading but i can temporarily stop it by clearing data from download manager. i never told it to download any offline speech data and never use Voice Search at the moment. it's got auto update off, and Play Store is disabled (don't ask). Google's been having problems with the Play Store ever since it's been called the Play Store. i still have random success with it. like tonight, i could browse it fine, but it refused to initiate a download at all. never gave an error just sat there like it was going to download with the barber pole graph but nothing. last night it kept saying there was no connection when indeed there was, and it fails to download or forgets purchases on a regular schedule. i now use it only to download a previously purchased app or to update one. nothing was wrong with the Android Market not sure why Google had to change it and never has fixed it. they change the UI all the time but never fix the real problems it has had since day one.

I've not had any major problems with the Play Store in its current form, other than what happened last year. Using latest updated version. I've not made any purchases, it's free apps and games only, but nothing has gone missing. Only thing I find is that downloads can be rather slow sometimes because Google doesn't operate any Play Store servers in China. Downloads are likely coming from the US. 1Mobile Market always downloads nice and fast though, I wonder why.

There's obviously something going on with the malfunctioning voice data update thing. This is Google trying to push something that's clearly unsolicited. As I said, I don't speak German, and not many around this part of the world does either. :D

Isn't there a setting for "Use Offline Speech Recognition" (or something like that) in the settings for Google Search / Google Now?

Heck, it might be in the options for the Google Voice Keyboard. You've got offline voice enabled somewhere, regardless of where it is. Trying to the stop the downloads with the current methods you're using is like only treating the symptoms instead of the source, I think.

I'm using the stock TouchWiz ROM on my Tab 2, so that rules out the launcher. under settings--voice search the only thing under 'offline speech data' is a sub-menu of installed languages, but none are installed. it seems to have initiated this download on its own, and it attempts it each time i boot the tablet up. i can cancel it but it would just re-start again next time i turn it on (i have to shut it down to recharge it--for some reason it refuses to charge with the power on since the OTA update--get a red 'X' on the battery if i attempt to charge it with power on, so i shut it down each night) I have never used voice search (i use a separate app for voice control since Google Now refuses to control things like bluetooth or wifi toggles by voice) and never told it to do anything offline. soon as i updated my tab it initiated the download after locking onto my wifi. only this Tab 2 is affected. my phone and other devices are not doing this. I'm thinking Samsung flubbed this particular OTA. it has more problems than it's worth and unfortunately XDA does not carry a stock 4.1.2 ROM for this thing.

I don't have your problem but an idea came to mind. Are you guys using the Google Experience Launcher? Or something else that's been updated to use speech stuff. Maybe an app wants the speech stuff updated or installed? What's running when this happens?

I was using the Google Experience launcher, is still installed but not using it at the moment. When it's trying to download the voice data stuff I'm using Touchwiz. Android 4.1.2 on a Galaxy Win Duos phone.

EDIT

I found what was causing it for me. See other post.

It was Google Search causing it. Just had a look, and for some reason it was set to Deutsch(Deutschland)*. I'd already installed offline English(UK). There's an option to auto-update or not. It was set to auto-update over WiFi. I've now turned it off, as apparently they have a problem with sending the updates through, which made me notice it in the first place. Could be same thing for Nick as well, the data downloads are going very slowly.

The offline languages seem to be around 15-20MB each.

*maybe Google Search voice recognition might work a bit better for me now....doh! mein gott!

First of all the download in question is real. And yes the answer is in Google Now settings. It's a 44 MB language package an update. So go into setting then into voice there are three tabs above you like to turn off the wifi only stuff okay this will end that problem. Download US then clear your app cache for downloads because its there error not removing the caution icon.
