Root New Phone Root & Superbrick?

I'm getting a new EPIC 4G Touch on Monday, and I was doing some research and read that officially JB 4.1.2 had been released for it. I looked at the guide in the STICKY about rooting and stuff, as that's what I usually follow to do the stuff, and it looked kinda old so I wasn't sure if it was safe to follow.

Also, if the phone I receive is not 4.1.2, should I update it before rooting to 4.1.2 or not upgrade or does it make any difference?

I read something freaky on Cyanogenmod somewhere about a bug that causes a superbrick or something of the sort, but I couldn't find any other info about it. Could someone explain what exactly that is to me, as it kinda freaks me out.
OH and also, what is a "Modem"? I read stuff about flashign a JB modem vs ICS modem and blah blah. What exactly is that? And are there flaws in using a custom rom with an ICS modem?

Thanks so much!

You don't root TO anything, you root. That gives you administrative access to the operating system. (Like Run as administrator does in Windows.) If you update to a new official ROM you'll have to root that one too. If you flash a custom ROM, they are usually rooted.

BTW, rooting voids all warranties on the phone. So does flashing a ROM.

It could. Or it could be that someone flashed a CM ROM meant for a different phone.

But even if it's a hard brick (the phone does nothing, even when you press the power button), it's fixable. The only thing not fixable is physical damage (which can result from flashing the wrong ROM).

The modem is the thing that turns the digital noise into human speech and human speech into digital noise. What you're talking about is the firmware that runs the modem. Are there flaws running a custom ROM using an ICS modem? Not if it's an ICS ROM. Running a JB ROM with an ICS modem might cause a problem. So might running an ICS ROM and an JB modem.

Should you root? Should you flash a custom ROM? If you need to. Doing it just to do it is voiding the warranty for no reason. It's a lose-lose situation. If you bungee jump using thin rubber bands, go for it. But if you keep your eyes open when you cross a busy street, you may want to think twice.

Thanks for your reply!

I was referring to the eMMC brick thing. Will that applyon JB? Because I don't quite understand it.

I want to use custom roms on this phone, and I'm able to follow the sticky root guide, but is there an ideal guide for like "Fixing everything all in one"? Like Custom Recovery or w/e.

Sorry I'm a noob when it comes to this stuff.

If not, would you be able to tell me what should be done ideally? ie flash recovery then rom then w/e blah blah

Okay thanks a bunch!
