Samsung Galaxy S2 fails to boot up

Hello All. I'm new to this forum. I found my way here looking for a solution for my Samsung Galaxy S2. I'm using this phone for almost 2.5 years now and it never gave me any trouble. I haven't rooted my phone yet. Using the firmware provided by Samsung. I'm running Jelly Bean. 2 days ago I was updating my apps through Google Play when my phone turned off automatically. I tried turning it on. The first screen goes by which Says Samsung Galaxy SII GT-i9100. Then the Samsung logo animation goes by when the blue colour covers up Samsung text. The next is Samsung glowing in a blue Halo. The phone gets stuck on that screen. I left it that way and after quite some time the phone switches off automatically and sometimes it just stays like that and the phone gets heated up. I read somewhere that it may be a battery issue so I borrowed my friend's battery but its the same. Shall I go for a new battery? I can enter Recovery Mode and Download Mode. I haven't tried factory reset yet because I have some important contacts and Memo in my phone which sadly I don't have backup of and I can't lose it. So any suggestions that can save my data will be helpful and what shall I do now? Shall I buy a brand new battery or do I have to factory reset it? I badly need my contacts and memo so it'll be really helpful if anyone of you can give a solution where my data is safe and phone starts up. Thanks a lot for taking your time out for helping me!

Sorry to learn that you are having a problem with your Galaxy S2. You say that you are able to boot into Recovery Mode. Can I suggest that using the volume button, you navigate to the option, "Wipe cache partition", and select it. This simply wipes any corrupt temporary data from the partition and does not affect your stored data. Once done, see if your phone will reboot normally. If so, I would strongly advise sync'ing your Contacts with your gmail account or at least, in Contacts, selecting to Export a copy to your external SD card in case anything happens in the future.

I tried Wipe cache partition as you suggested but it is still the same. I have also tried the method of removing battery, holding power button for 10 seconds then re-inserting battery but it didn't help.

Oh, dear! You really only have 2 other options that I can see...

1. Try flashing the stock Samsung firmware for your phone via Odin which may leave your data intact and allow you to boot up. See #1.7 of the Jelly Bean update - Dummies Guide.

2. To do a Factory Reset, which will wipe your phone's Contacts and data and see if it boots up. If not you will have to do #1, above.

I did step 1 and followed it step by step. All went good. Odin marked it Pass. But it is still getting stuck at the very same place. Shall I try a brand new battery? or factory reset is the only option? I can still get into recovery mode and download mode. Everything is still the same.

A new battery won't help with a bootloop I'm afraid.

I'm afraid not. If you have not sync'd your phone to your gmail account or manually exported your Contacts to the external SD card then I am afraid that the Factory Reset will have wiped them from your phone and rooting will not help.

If the memo and contacts are so important, turn the phone off immediately.

There are forensic tools that can be used to recover wiped data from this type of memory, but you will have to research this yourself. I have performed this task with flash drives before with some success, but YMMV.

Or consult a data recovery specialist. These suggestions may sound OTT but like I said, I have no idea how important this data is to you.
