Root A couple of Dumb questions

I know, I know...........

I have a N5 and it is unlocked and rooted with Xposed, Gravity Box and Ultimate Navbar installed. It works 100% for me

My questions may sound dumb but here goes..........

I have been rooting phones ever since the Droid X days but have NEVER used a backup of anything. Oh well.

I have TWRP installed as a custom recovery. I do a backup through TWRP.

1.) Is this TWRP backup the same as a nandroid backup?
2.) If I do have an issue, can I just do a factory reset and after rooting and loading TWRP, use the TWRP backup to reset my phone to where it was?

I do keep a copy of the TWRP backup on my PC.

Only dumb question is the unasked one...

1. Yes

2. Actually, if you have an issue, try restoring the previous nandroid backup. That is why, every time you make a real change, you make a new nandroid backup. If something goes wrong, just restore what you had and try again or not.

3. Yes, you should. You can keep a complete history of backups there so you can go back to any point in time. You won't want to keep too many on your device because they will eat a lot of space.

Just wanted to add that doing a factory reset won't overwrite your recovery.

FYI..... Just did a factory reset. My recovery remained the same... .TWRP. I then loaded my backup and the phone is 100% back to the way it was.

Good to hear. Nandroid backups are your best friend when things go wrong.

Just one thing to add - when you take your backup, make sure that you backup the EFS partition too (I think it is the default in the latest TWRP for N5, but just in case).

In case you decide to wipe using TWRP, and wipe the EFS out, your phone's IMEI information is gone as well, and if you don't have it backed up, your phone is going to have issues connecting to any celltower.

Just to build on the post above, I'd create a nandroid backup of just your EFS, name it EFS backup or something obvious and keep a copy of that either on on your computer, cloud storage, or both.
