Root New(ish) Nexus 7

So... less than 12 hours after I got my hands on my (eBay bargain) N7 - it's rooted (only took so long, as I was in work), has the new Google Experience Launcher on it/the "OK Google" hot-word detection set up and is all backed up.

It'd been such a long time since I've rooted manually (since I rooted my DHD, 3 years ago) and I'd used Wug's kit for my Nexus 4, I fancied the challenge of doing it manually.

Big thanks to Scary Alien for encouragement, moral support and hand holding - looking forward to flashing a few ROM's and wanted to see if anyone had any good suggestions?

I havent really felt the need for a rom yet but i flashed Franko kernel which is really nice and im using Xposed Framework to add features/customisation to the stock rom.
Think if i was gona flash a rom it would be Omni because i respect the devs and i like what theyre doin

I'm not doing anything to the phone until KitKat has been out long enough for me to decide whether I'm upgrading. Once I do it's root and safestrap. Even if I find that there's no ROM I like, I want to give an educated no. And if someone comes out with a way of putting a recovery with nandroid backup and restore on it, that gets put on and used. (At least we can get the AT&T Note 3 back to stock now.)

My N4 is stock, so thought I'd play around a little with my N7.

Rooting was pretty straight forward... guess that's what you get with a Nexus device though

Might have to have a look at Xposed framework... never really thought about customising the stock ROM!

Xposed is excellent mate. I honestly think its the future of modding. Have a nice stable rooted rom, a kernel that suits your use then a framework to add the customisations that custom roms do.
Best thing about xposed is that all the "modules" are just APKs so titanium backs them up with their settings.
I recommend GravityBox (kk version), Xblast Tools, Youtube AdAway :thumbup:

I went ahead and installed Multi-Rom, and do like the idea of dual booting, either (so far) into Jelly Bean, or into Kit Kat.
It incorporates itself into the TWRP recovery. I must say thank's to Scary Alien for his Android Root Tool Kit,which restored root, (when I have no ADB USB capability, and use Stick Mount, and OTG) and his free play store app, so easily restored root.

So this Multi Rom has some good features built in, some that are perplexing too, and may need future tweaking and might need "user be wary" attitude going in, yet also, deliver's the experience, that many people are familiar with on their computer's.

16GB... all mine though (wife has an iPad), so I don't think I should have any space issues

Lmao i swear ive never been diagnosed dyslexic but sometimes i see a word and my brain seems to be lazy and guess what the word is and from then on, my brain sees what it thought the word was.

Recommend Xprivacy module too - good tool if you want control over app access to your device. Sometimes doesn't play ball after a TB restore though.

As it's been a while, I'm starting to get that "time to flash" itch... would be doing the deed now, if it weren't for the fact that it's currently only got 11% battery

I'm quite a fan of the Cyanogen ROM's and think I'm probably going to have run stable build of CM11 I've just found

Was also thinking about flashing a Kernel... have used Franco's before (on my N4)... is anyone else using it at the moment? Do I just download the latest 4.4 img (boot-r77.img)?

Franco Kernel 75 for Kit Kat
Franco Kernel 65 for Jelly Bean

Those are what I found will work.

And yes ... it WAS only because I found out the HARD way if all of you need to know

And with both Kit Kat, and Jelly-Bean installed (with Multi-Rom) on the tablet, I'm staying amused.
And I even keep thinking Ubuntu Touch "Trusty" might get, and stay solid one of these boot-up's. Sometimes it's almost there, other times, it just can't completely load, (or find Data Source) so no real value to me.

i used the Franko Kernel Updater app to download and flash r77 mate n its working great (stock 4.4.2).
I dont usually like using an app to automate flashing things but it was just so fast n easy lol

I actually went to the thread on XDA... can't get r75... only r76 or r77. Just gonna download the most up to date one and use that!

I was close. 70 ... something.

And checking the source, my memory stick, I used 77, (where 75 came from is anyone's guess?)

Should have a memory stick plugged into my head to reference I suppose.

Well... that was a bit of a let down!

Backed up, wiped and then flashed CM11 (and then another ROM just to be sure) and got stuck trying to boot up - kept telling me the keyboard had stopped.

Had a bit of a nightmare getting back to stock - ended up using Wug's toolkit to flash stock (as nothing else seemed to be working and I couldn't put USB debugging on) and then rooted manually again.

At least I've flashed Franco's kernel

Gonna leave it there for tonight... have another go over the weekend!

Initially, CM11 did. I booted back into recovery to try flash gapps n it wasn't having any of it. Tried to wipe and relay without gapps... Same problem!

Must've done something wrong, as just flashed CM11 and my apps are downloading!
