App to send texts through Gmail SMS

I live in Australia, and I text friends who live in the US all the time from Gmail SMS, but there are days where I can't be at the computer, so I'm wondering if there is an app that'll allow me to use the gmail sms on android?

I've tried using the Gmail app on android, and I honestly can't figure out how to send sms through it.

I tried Google Hangouts, but when I try to send a text to a US number (Have only tried US numbers) it keeps saying "message not sent". Is there something I specifically need to go into in Google Hangouts to do it?

Look in your Gmail sent items at the texts sent. The addresses are email addresses like xxxyyyzzzz@txt.att.net
You can email those same email addresses from gmail and they result in text messages. Perhaps add that email address to their contact info to make it easier

The availability of An email address like above may depend on what carrier your friends phones are

I actually don't have any sent texts, I have them in the chat tab and the only email I see is a "@sms.talk.google.com" one, with nothing before it, which I assume is me. Only thing I see is Name<number>, which is the friends name and number. How else would I go about finding the email address?

If the other person has hangouts & the message is sent via internet data then it's free. If it's sent as a gsm sms then charges may apply.

So you went and looked in sent gmail and there was nothing there? If so, yours acts different than mine.
